सूक्तिमुक्तावली - भक्ति मार्ग

हरिभक्तिः केवलतो वेदान्तग्रन्थवाचनाभ्यासात्
    नभवेद् यत्पञ्चाङ्गे कदा कदा कुत्र वृष्टिरिति ।
तत्कोष्टकं सुलिखितं तेषां पुञ्जान्नचैक जलबिन्दुः
    तद्वद्भक्तिप्राप्तौ तदुक्तगुणभाक स्वयं भूयात् ॥

hari bhaktiH kevalato vedaanta grantha vaachana abhyaasaat
    na bhaved yat panchaange kadaa kadaa kutra vRuShTiriti ।
tat koShTaka sulikhitam teShaam punjaat na cha eka jalabinduH
    tadvad bhakti praaptau tadukta guNa bhaak svayam bhUyaat ॥

Devotion towards God can not be got from reading a lot of books and scriptures. A lot of scholars may get together and create the panchanga (calendar) which accurately tells when and where it would rain. All of them put together can not force even a drop of water from the sky. Just like that reading a lot of books is not enough for realization - one has to have strong devotion in God to realize the truth.

सूक्तिमुक्तावली - शौर्यं स्वभावविजय

शौर्यं स्वभावविजय इति हि मतं तत्कथं तदीय जयः
    यद्वत्पुष्पात्सुफले जाते पुष्पच्छदा विशुष्य निपतन्ति ।
तद्वत्परमेशांशो यथा यथाऽन्तस्समुल्लसति
    लय एव जयः स्यात् तथा तथा स्वस्वभावस्य ॥

shaurayam svabhaava vijayaiti hi matam tat katham tadIya jayaH
    yadvat puShpaat suphale puShpachChadaa vishuShya nipatanti ।
tadvat paramesha amsho yathaa yathaa antaH samullasati
    laya eva jayaH syaat tathaa tathaa svabhaavasya ॥

The real victory is only when one is able to conquer his habits (innate tendencies). What kind of victory is that? It is like what happens to the flower that wilts in order to give way to the fruit. Its own destruction is its victory. Similarly, when the thought of God comes into our mind - it takes over our conscience and destroys any pride that we may have. This is the real victory.

ईशप्रेम कथं स्यात्? स्वपतौ सत्याः सुनिर्मलं यथा प्रेम ।
कृपणस्य व धने स्यात् तद्वत् विश्वेश्वरे दृढप्रेम ॥

iisha prema katham syAt? sva patau sunirmalam yathA prema ।
kRupaNasya vA dhane syAt tadvat vishveshvare dRuDhaprema ॥

How strong is the devotion of real devotees of God? As pure as the love of a chaste wife towards her husband and has lasting as a misers love towards his wealth.

अभ्यासस्तावद भक्तेर्यावन्नामश्रुतेस्तु समकालम् ।
नाश्रुनिपातोत्पुलकौ तौचेन्नावश्यकत्वमस्यकिल ॥

abhyAsaH tAvad bhakteH yavat naama ashruteH tu samakAlam ।
na ashru nipata utpulakau tau chet na avashyakatvam asya kila ॥

One must practice the rituals of bhakti (devotion) until the point when tears roll out of the eyes every time naturally when he hears the name of God. But once such devotion is internalized, there is no need for any ritual.

श्रीमद्गृहेतु धात्री तत्पुत्रं पाति लालयते
    स्वीयात्स्नेहाधिक्येनत्वपि नैजं न साहि तं मनुते ।
एवंदृढप्रबोधस्तद्वन्मनुजः स्वपुत्र पौत्रादीन्
     सस्नेहं पालयतु ज्ञात्वा विश्वस्य तं परं पितरम् ॥

shrImad gRuhe tu dhAtrI tat putram pAti mAlayate
    svIyAt sneha adhikyenatvapi naijam na sAhi tam manute ।
evam dRuDha prabodhaH tadvat manujaH svaputra pautrAdIn
    sasnehaM pAlayatu jnAtvA vishvasya tam param pitaram ॥

A nanny in a rich household will look after her master's son with more care than her own children. But the feeling is not real. Just like that, wise men of the world will treat their children and grandchildren with lot of care. But they know that the father of all beings in this world is none other than God himself. Hence it is our duty to take care of them just like the nanny. We are not supposed to develop any attachment towards them.

स्याच्चेदीशदिदृक्षा नाम्नि श्रधां दृढां सदा कुरुत ।
सत्यासत्य विवेकं नित्यं चानेन तत्त्वविज्ञानम् ॥

If you want to be able to see God with your own eyes, you will first need to believe firmly in his name and think about him always. You should always be able to separate the truth from false. Using that intellect, one must try to realise the truth that will lead us to God.

गृहकार्ये संलग्नाः स्वान्ते सञ्चिन्तयन्ति परपुरुषम् ।
जारिण्य इव कुरुध्वे हृदिपरमेशं बहिः कार्यम् ॥

Prostitutes have a very efficient way of multitasking. While they do all the housework, in their mind they are thinking about other men. Be like them. Always think about God at all times. Outwardly, take part in all the work of this world.
