वाक्यपदीय - तर्क

यत्नेनानुमितोऽप्यर्थः कुशलैरनुमातृभिः ।
अभियुक्ततरैरन्यैरन्यथैवोपपाद्यते ॥

yatnena anumitaH api arthaH kushalaiH anumAtRubhhiH ।
abhiyuktataraiH anyaiH anyathA eva upapAdyate ॥

- vAkyapadIya

Smart people may prove something based on logic and arguments. But that does not make it the eternal truth. Because, someone smarter will come along and use different arguments to prove something beyond.

वाक्यपदीय - धर्मः न तर्केण

न चागमादृते धर्मस्तर्केण व्यवतिष्ठते ।
ॠषीणामपि यज्ज्ञानं तदप्यागमपूर्वकम् ॥

- वाक्यपदीय

na cha agamAdRute dharmaH tarkeNa vyavatiShThate ।
RuShINAmapi yat jnAnam tadapi agama pUrvakam ॥

Dharma does not stand solely on basis of debate and logic. It has to explained on the basis of what is there in the Vedas. Even the knowledge of all the sages is derived from the Vedas.

हस्तस्पर्शादिवांधेन विषमे पथि दावता ।
अनुमानप्रधानेन विनिपातो न दुर्लभः ॥

hasta sparshAd iva andhaH viShame pathi dAvatA ।
anumAna pradhAnena vinipAto na durlabhaH ॥

- vAkyapadIya

A blind man finds his way by touching and feeling. Imagine him running on a treacherous course. He will often stumble and fall. It is a similar fate that awaits someone who undertakes a project based solely on a mere guess.

वाक्यपदीय - स्वार्थ

निमित्तेभ्यः प्रवर्तन्ते सर्व एव स्वभूतये ।
अभिप्रायानुरोधोऽपि स्वार्थस्यैव प्रसिद्धये ॥

nimittebhyaH pravartante sarva eva svabhutaye ।
abhiprAya anurodho api svArthas aiva prasiddhaye ॥

Every action one takes is always intended to benefit him. Even when he follows someone else's opinions. No one will follow others unless they see that there is self interest in it.

Many logicians may have used lots of points and proved a point. But that does not stop more intelligent people coming along and using more logic points and prove it wrong. The same is true for them also. So, matters of faith are never proved by logic.

प्रज्ञाविवेकं लभते विभिन्नागमदर्शनैः ।
कियद्वा शक्यमुन्नेतुं स्वयत्नमनुधावता ॥

Presence of mind and wisdom can be attained by studying various scriptures on rituals and contemplation. How much can one learn solely on his experiences?

तत्तदुत्प्रेक्षमाणानां पुराणैरागमैर्विना ।
अनुपासितवृद्धानां विद्या नातिप्रसीदति ॥

- वाक्यपदीय

Knowledge can not be attained by a person who does not put in the hard work to understand the vedas, the puranas, the reasons behind our rituals, serve our elders. Such a person will only spend time in exaggerating facts and pretending to be well-educated.

न चागमादृते धर्मस्तर्केण व्यवतिष्ठते ।
ऋषीणामपि यज्ज्ञानं तदप्यागमपूर्वकम् ॥

- वाक्यपदीय

Rituals are an integral way of following dharma. One can not establish dharma in a society based solely on logic. Even the ancient sages who started these rituals knew about this. All their knowledge (about the universe) is hence not opposed to the rituals that they began.
