सूक्तिमुक्तावली - सज्जन सहवासः

आन्द्रेन्धनमप्यनले शुष्कं पूर्वं ततो ज्वलति
    एवं सज्जन सविधे पूर्वं लोभार्द्रता विशुष्य ततः ।
विषयाभिग्रस्तानां अन्तस्था कामरोष सहिता या
    ज्वलति च विवेकवह्नौ साऽपी ज्वलति प्रकृष्ट सुखमन्ते ॥

aandra indhanam api anale shuShkam purvam tato jvalati
    evam sajjana savidhe pUrvam lobhaadrataa vishuShya tataH ।
viShaya abhigrastAnAm antastha kAma roSha sahitA yA
    jvalati cha viveka vahnau sA api jvalati prakRuShTa sukhamante ॥

Even when the fuel is wet, it will dry as soon as you put in fire and get burnt as it is meant to. Kinship with virtuous people is also like that. Even when people are drenched(wet) with greed, they will lose their lust and anger in the fire of knowledge. Along with that they will lose their greed also and find happiness.

सूक्तिमुक्तावली - सर्वं कृष्णगतं

कृष्णार्पणं विदधतो नास्मादन्यः सुखावहो मार्गः ।
सर्वस्वं कृष्णगतं नह्यवशिष्टं ममत्वाय ॥

kRuShNArpanam vidadhato na asmaad anyaH sukhaavaho maargaH ।
sarvasvam kRuShNagatam na hi avashiShTam mama tvayaa ॥

All that we have is offered to Krishna. There is nothing left beyond it. If we live life with this in mind, we will be very happy. When everything we see is His, there is nothing left to fight for for you and me.

सूर्यकरा स्सर्वगता अप्यादर्शे जले तथा क्षीरे ।

Sun rays can reach anywhere. But they are specially present (reflect from) mirror, water or milk. Just like that God is present everywhere. But he makes his presence explicit in the hearts of his true devotees.

बालानां त्वानन्दः क्रीडनकैरेव रत्नधनबहुलः ।
तद्वद्भक्तस्यापि प्रभुण्याह्यधिको धनप्रतिष्टातः ॥

baalaanaam tu aanandaH krIDanakaiH eva ratna dhana bahulaH ।

    आदिवासं संतुद्यहि विश्रान्तौ सः परं सुखं मनुते ।
तद्वद्विहितं सकलं कार्यं संपाद्य कृतकृत्यः
    परिलभ्य हि परितोषं परमेशेऽसौ परं सुखं लभते ॥

    aadivAsam santudyaahi vishraantau saH param sukham manute ।

In a wealthy man's house servants work all week and are very happy on the day of weekly holiday. Just like that we should work hard in this world and rest at the feet of the God happily after we have served all our duties earnestly.

प्राच्यामुदये भाविनि सवितुः पूर्वं यथाऽनुरागः स्यात्
    पश्चाद्गतिस्त्वनूरोः प्राकट्यं हर्षकृत् हिरण्यगर्भस्य ।
मनसीशप्राकट्ये भाविनि पूर्वं स्वधर्मं शीलत्वम्
    पश्चाद्वैजिज्ञासा प्रभवति तस्माच्च भक्तिविज्ञानम् ॥

praachyaam udaye bhaavini savituH pUrvam yathaa anuraagaH syAt
    pashchAt gatiH tu anUroH prAkaTyam harShakRut hiraNyagarbhasya ।

    pashchAt vaijijnaasaa prabhavati tasmat cha bhakti vijnaanam ॥

At dawn before the sunrise, you will see beautiful red rays of Sun from the east. Then you will see the pleasant golden glow of the Sun and in time you will see the Sun in full brightness. The progression is similar to devotion towards God. First one leads his life morally. Then he starts thinking about God and finally realizes his existence through pure devotion.

पषाणोऽम्भसि पतितो नहि बहुवर्षैरापि मृदुर्भवति
    मृत्स्नास्यत्तु तदात्वे जलमिश्रा सुबहुमृद्वि ।
तद्वत् दृढहरिभक्तः छलैः प्रसङ्गैस्सुदुस्सहैर्व्यथितः
    नस्यदमोभक्तः स्वल्पैरापि हेतुभिर्द्रुतं चलितः ॥

paaShANaH ambhasi patito nahi bahuvarshaiH api mRuduH bhavati
    mRutsnAsyattu tadaatve jalamishraa subahumRudvi ।
tadvat dRuDhaharibhaktaH ChalaiH prasangaiH sudussahaiH vyathitaH
    nasyadamobhaktaH svalpairapi hetubhiH drutam chalitaH ॥

When a stone is put in water, it will not melt for years. If you put a lump of mud, it will dirty the water almost immediately. This is the difference between a real devotee and a fake one. A real devotee will hold his belief in God through all miseries, troubles and illusions. A fake devotee will abandon his beliefs at the slightest discomfort.
