You must not cross the rope used to tie a calf. (because the calf may be scared and try running away. This may hurt the calf. You may trip over the rope). You must not run when it is raining for obviuous danger of slippery landscapes. One must not see his own reflection in water (deep water. One of the common effects of doing so is 'vertigo').

Long ago the dowry custom in India was reverse of what exists today. The groom paid the bride's father a fee before asking for his daughter's hand. But this shloka advises the father not to accept even a small fee. The father of the bride is warned that if he accepts even a small amount as fee, it would tantamount to selling his own child.

A wise man will not give his daughter in marriage to these people - some living very far away, an uneducated person, a man who is only interested in seeking salvation, a madly courageous person or a poor person. दातृयाचकयोर्भेदः कराभ्यामेव दर्शितः ।
एकस्य गच्छताधस्तादुपर्यन्यस्य तिष्ठता ॥

The difference between the donor and the beggar can be known by looking at the position of their hands. The donor's hand point downwards and that of the beggar extends upwards. This is sometimes used as an idiom to describe a person. (Ex: Charudatta was such a good person that his palms always point downwards)

The high and indiscreet flames of the forest fire have burnt down many trees. The creepers that were clinging on to those trees are lying on the ground. It is these places that are in need of rain. But still, oh rain!! you pour water only over the cold mountains that are very high. Is this not an example of your arrogance? (misusing your power)
