तदश्मसारं हृदयं बतेदं
    यद्गृह्यमाणैर्हरिनामधेयैः ।
न विक्रियेताथ यदा विकारो
    नेत्रे जलं गात्ररुहेषु हर्षः ॥

One must disown a person to save a family. One family can be sacrificed to save a village. A village has to be abandoned to save a state. But if one needs to save his soul, he must abandon the entire world.

jIrNA tariH sarit iyam cha gabhIranIrA
    nakrAkulA vahati vAyuH ati prachanDaH ।
tAryA striyaScha shishavashcha, tathaiva vRuddhAH
    tatkarNadhAra bhujayoH balam AshrayAmaH ॥

The boat is broken. The river (of samsaara) is deep. There are dangerous crocodiles in the river and storm is raging. We have to get the women, children and old people across. So, let us rely on the prowess of the boatman (Krishna).

भागवत - धनिकः

जन्मैस्वर्यश्रुतश्रीभिरेधमानमदः पुमान् ।
नैवार्हत्यभिधातुम् वै त्वामकिंचनगोचरम् ॥

The following people must be treated with respect as if they were our fathers - one who gives birth, one who initiates us to the sanatana dharma, one who teaches us, one who gives us food and one who protects us and rescues us from fear.

गोपाल इति मत्वा त्वां प्रचुरक्षीरवांछया ।
श्रितो मातुः स्तनक्षीरमपि लब्धुं न शक्नुयाम् ॥

gopAla iti matvA tvAm prachura kShIra vAnChayA ।
shrito mAtuH stana kShIram api labdhum na shaknuyAm ॥

I thought you are a cowherd and came to your refuge looking forward to drink as much milk as I want. But your acquaintance has robbed me of the chance to drink milk from my own mother again. (by giving salvation and hence excused from being born again)

समयोचितपद्यमालिका - गुरुः

गुरुवो बहवः सन्ति शिष्यवित्तापहारकाः ।
दुर्लभः स गुरुर्लोके शिष्यचित्तापहारकः ॥

durlabhaH sa guruH loke shiShya chitta apahArakaH ॥

There are many teachers in this world who can steal the student's money. It is difficult to find one who can capture their mind and imagination.

गीर्भिर्गुरूणां परुषाक्षराभिः

Stupid people roam through the deep lakes, high mountains or forests deviod of people to get flowers for your worship. Oh Lord of Uma! why can not these people understand that the best offering is to offer their own mind to you which is better than any lotus.

Who is a friend at the end? Your own deeds, not the entire world. Who should be remembered? the foot of the lord, not the miseries. What should be desired? Pure happiness of salvation, not sensory pleasures. What should be spoken? Only the name of Hari (God), not anything else.

किं तर्केण वितर्कितेन शतशो ज्ञातेन किं छंदसा

अभ्यस्तेन च लक्षणेन किमहो ध्यानं न चेत् सर्वथा
    लोकालोकविलोकनैककुशलज्ञाने हृदि ब्रह्मणः ॥

kiM tarkeNa vitarkitena shatasho jnAtena kim ChandasA
kim pItena sudhA rasena bahudhA svAdhyAyapAThena kim ।

loka aloka viloka na eak kushala jnAne hRudI brahmaNaH ॥

What is the use of logic that is only used to argue? What is the use of having mastery over meters of poetry? What is the use of drinking elixir? What is the use of reciting Vedas many times? What is the use of practicing the craft of charm? If one does not have devotion towards God at heart, where there is ability to know everything in all worlds.

What is that sin that can does not wither way when one hurls himself (surrenders) at the lotus feet of Mukunda (Lord Vishnu) with palms closed and body prostrated? When one is given a potion of best medicine, then bad food can not harm him.

का दुर्लभा नराणां हरिभक्तिः, पातकं च किं हिंसा ।

What is very rare among people? Devotion towards God. What is sin? any form of cruelty. Who does God like? He who does not get anxious himself as well as not cause others be anxious.

When people realize that these worldly pleasures are all a mere illusion, they become fully engrossed in thoughts about God (Achyuta). When they are in such a state, some people cry, some laugh, revel, talk, dance, sing. In doing so, they will become one with God and attain salvation.

एतवानेव लोकेऽस्मिन् पुंसां धर्मः परः स्मृतः ।
भक्तियोगो भगवति तन्नामग्रहणादिभिः ॥

bhaktiyogo bhagavati tat nAma grahaNAdibhiH ॥

In this world there is one dharma that sets itself way above others - it is to be devoted to God by means such as chanting his name at all times. If you have him in your mind at all time, how will you commit any sin?

    येऽभिद्रुह्यन्ते मनसा कर्मणा वा ।

The sin attributed to hurting teacher, father or mother - mentally or by actions is worse than killing a fetus. There is no sin more heinous than hurting those who gave you a life.

This body is now very old. All the worldly pleasures have been destroyed. This body will fall one day or another. Why are suffering by taking so many medicines? You should be drinking the concoction made of devotion about Lord Krishna.

    न यावच्छ्रीकृष्णस्मरणरससिंधौ निपतति ॥

avidyA iyam vidyA bhavati bhagavat bhakti rahitA
    na chet viShNoH prema prasRumara mahAnanda mahitA ।
na tAvat chAnchalyam tyajati cha manovRutti vihagI
    na yAvat shrI kRuShNa smaraNa rasa sindhau nipatati ॥

Any knowledge is not knowledge if it does not give you happiness of being in love with God. One will not get eternal happiness if he is not in love with Vishnu. Unless the bird (our mind) immerses itself in the river (of bhakti), it will not leave its restlessness.

अवधारय धर्मेषु प्रधनमवधानतः ।
निर्भरानंदाय गोविंदाय मनोऽर्पय ॥

nirbhara Ananda kandAya govindaaya mano arpaya ॥

When it comes to showering favors God does not differentiate on caste, beauty, wealth or age. God only cares if the person deserves it or not.

आत्मात्वं गिरिजा मतिः परिजनाः प्राणाः शरीरं गृहं

संचारस्तु पदोः प्रदक्षिणविधिः स्तोत्राणि सर्वा गिरो
यद्यत्कर्म करोमि तत्तदखिलं शंभो तवाराधनम् ॥

Oh Shambu! you are my soul. Goddess Girija is my mind. The other Gods in your court are my life. My body is a temple. My indulgence in sensory pleasures are ways of me worshiping you. My sleep is meditation. Everywhere I walk, I think of it as circling you. Every word I utter is a way of praising you. What ever I do is part of your worship.

अज्ञानादथवा ज्ञानादुत्तमश्लोकनाम यत् ।
संकीर्तितमघं पुंसो देहेदेधो यथानलः ॥

sankIrtitam agham pumso dEhEt edho yathA analaH ॥

Intentionally or not, if one utters the names of the God then his sin will burn down just like wood put in fire.

अच्युतानंतगोविन्दनामोच्चारणभेषजात् ।
नश्यन्ति सकलाः रोगाः सत्यं सत्यं ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥

achyuta ananta govinda nAma ucchAraNa bheShajAt ।
nashyanti sakalAH rogAH satyam satyam bravImyaham ॥

Achyuta, Ananta and Govinda - if one chants the name of god like this, it becomes a medicine that can cure all ailments. I swear on this truth.

शिवानन्दलहरि - भक्ति

अंकोलं निजबीजसंततिरयस्कान्तोपलं सूचिका
    साध्वी नैजविभुं लता क्षितिरुहं सिंधुः सरिद्वल्लभं ।
प्राप्नोतीह यथा तथा पशुपतेः पादारविन्दद्वयं
    चेतोवृत्तिरुपेत्य तिष्ठति सदा सा भक्तिरुच्यते ॥

ankolam nija bIja santatiH ayaskAntopalam sUchikA
    sAdhvi naijavibhum latA kShitiruham sindhuH sarit vallabham ।
prApnotIha yathA tathA pashupateH pAdAravinda dvayam
    chetovRuttiH upetya tiShThati sadA sA bhaktiH uchyate ॥

The seeds of ankola tree always follow the tree. A needle follows the magnet. A chaste wife always follows her husband. A creeper follows the tree. A river seeks the ocean. Just like that my mind always seeks the pair of lotus feet of you - Oh Lord of all animals (Shiva). After getting there, let it be there for ever. This longing to be at God's presence is called devotion.

    सततसुकृती भूयाद्भूपः प्रसाधितमण्डलः ॥

Let the people be generous, healthy and never tired. Let them all live to their full lives. Let the devotion in God be unwavering. Let the king give ample support to the scholars. Let the king understand his special responsibility and always do good for his subjects.
