saMgrahaikaparaH prAyaH samudro api rasAtale ।
dAtAram jaladam pashya garjantam bhuvanopari ॥

- bhojaprabandha

One who collects will always be at the bottom - like the ocean the collector of gems and precious stones is condemned to the rasatala world. On the other hand the one who gives it to others will always be on top - like the clouds that roar on top of the world.

One out of hundred men will be brave. One out of a thousand men would be a scholar. One out of ten thousand men will be a good orator. It is not yest sure if there is a person who can be called a real donor (selfless).

The difference between the donor and the beggar can be known by looking at the position of their hands. The donor's hand point downwards and that of the beggar extends upwards. This is sometimes used as an idiom to describe a person. (Ex: Charudatta was such a good person that his palms always point downwards)
