मनुस्मृति - विद्या धर्म

स्त्रियो रत्नान्यथो विद्या धर्मं शौचं सुभाषितम् ।
विविधानि च शिल्पानि समादेयानि सर्वतः ॥

striyo ratnAni atho vidyA dharma shaucham subhAShitam ।
vividhAni cha shilpAni samAdeyAni sarvataH ॥

One can collect these items from all places, any time - women (as brides), gems, knowledge, dharma, righteousness, cleanliness, a good saying and a good sculpture.

सर्वो दण्डजितो लोके दुर्लभो हि शुचिर्नरः ।
दण्डस्य हि भयात्सर्वं जगत्भोगाय कल्पते ॥

sarvo danDajito loke durlabho hi shuchiH naraH ।
danDasya hi bhayAtsarvam jagat bhogAya kalpate ॥

Order is preserved in this world by punishment. It is very rare to find people who are clean by themselves. Punishment preserves the order so that we can enjoy fearlessly in this world.

संमार्जनोपांजनेन सेकेलोल्लेखनेन च ।
गवां च परिवासेन भूमिः शुध्यति पंचभिः ॥

gavAm cha parivAsena bhUmiH shudhyati panchabhiH ॥

There are five ways you can keep the ground clean - by sweeping dirt off it, by smearing it with cow-dung, by sprinkling water over it, by scraping the top layer and by letting cows stand there.

विषादयमृतं ग्राह्यं बालादपि सुभाषितम् ।

Elixir should be extracted even from poison. A good saying must be learnt even from a small child. Good character must be emulated even from enemies. Gold must be extracted even from garbage.

तेन यायात्सतां मार्गं तेन गच्छन् न रिष्यते ॥

If one follows the footsteps of their fathers and forefathers then there will be no fear of straying from the path of Dharma - moral code of conduct.

यस्य वाङ्मनसी शुद्धे सम्यग्गुप्ते च सर्वदा ।
स वै सर्वमवाप्नोति वेदान्तोपगतं फलम् ॥

yasya vAk manasi shuddhe samyak gupte cha sarvadA ।
sa vai sarvAm avApnoti vedAnta upagatam phalam ॥

If you have your mind and speech clean and under control, then you will get all the fruits that are possible by the knowledge of vedantas (extracts of Vedas).

यं मातापितरौ क्लेशं सहेते संभवे नृणाम् ।
न तस्य निष्कृतिः शक्या कर्तुं वर्षशतैरपि ॥

na tasya niShkRutiH shakyA kartum varShashatairapi ॥

One must never forget the pains that parents take to bring us to this world. One can not repay the debt even by working for a hundred years.

फलं कतकवृक्षस्य यद्यप्यंबुप्रसादकं ।
न नाम ग्रहणादेव तस्य वारि प्रसीदति ॥

phalaM katakavRukShasya yadyapi ambuprasAdakam ।
na nAma grahaNAdeva tasya vAri prasIdati ॥

The seeds of the clearing nut plant (Strychnos Potatorum) is known to clear the water of suspended particles. But mere uttering its name will not do it. Knowledge is similar - it has to be applied, not just recited.

God created objects in this world for life to sustain by itself. He created moving objects, static objects all to satisfy the demands of 'life'.

नित्यमास्यं शुचि स्त्रीणां शकुनैः फलपातने ।
प्रसवे च शुचिर्वत्सः श्वा मृगग्रहणे शुचिः ॥

nityam Asyam shuchi strINAm shakunaiH phalapAtane ।
prasave cha shuchir vatsaH shvA mRugagrahaNe shuchiH ॥

A woman's face is always clean. Fruits that the birds drop (after eating half) are not to be considered dirty. The udder of a cow that is sucked by a calf is clean. If a dog brings the hunted meat, it is also considered clean - not dirty.

नापृष्टः कस्यचिद्ब्रूयात् न चान्यायेन पृच्छतः ।

One must never answer without being asked a question. One must never answer when the question is not posed with correct intentions (illegal, arrogance, etc..). Even after knowing everything, a wise man must act stupid in this world.

चरणामन्नमचराः दंष्ट्रिणामप्यदंष्ट्रिणः ।
अहस्ताश्च सहस्तानां शूराणां चैव भीरवः ॥

charANAm annam acharAH damShTriNAm api adamShTriNaH ।
ahastAshcha sahastAnAm shUrANAm chaiva bhIravaH ॥

Immovables (plants) become food to the movables (herbivores). Those without teeth (canines) to those with teeth (carnivores). Those without hands(fish, birds) to those with hands (humans). Cowards become food for the brave.

क्षांत्या शुद्ध्यंति विद्वांसो दानेनकार्यकारिणः ।

kShAntyA shudhyanti vidvAmso dAnena akArya kAriNaH ।
pracChanna pApA japyena tapasA vedavettamaaH॥

A scholar cleanses himself by forgiving. A sinner by resorting to charities. A secret sin is cleansed by meditation. Those who understand the vedas cleanse themselves by penances.

    बालवृद्धातुरैर्वैद्यैर्ज्ञातिसंबंधिबांधवैः ।

    दुहित्रा दासवर्गेण विवादं न समाचरेत् ॥

Rutvik purohita AchAryaiH mAtula atithi samshritaiH
    bAla vRuddha AturaiH vaidyaiH GYAtisaMbaMdhibAndhavaiH ।
mAtA pitRubhyAm jAmIbhiH bhrAtrA putreNa bhAryayA
    duhitrA dAsavargeNa vivAdam na samAcharet ॥

One must never have a harsh argument with the following - a priest, a brahmin, teacher, uncle, guest, those whom you have given refuge, children, old people, patients , doctors, relatives of your father, son-in-law, relatives of mother, mother, father, sister, daughter-in-law, brother, son, wife, daughter and servants.

ॠतामृताभ्यां जीवेत्तु मृतेन प्रमृतेन वा ।
सत्यानृताभ्यां अपि वा न श्ववृत्त्या कदाचन ॥

satya anRutAbhyAm api vA na shvavRuttya kadAchana ॥

A household man can lead his life by the following ways. He can get food by gathering grains off a field. Someone may give him food without asking. He may beg for food. He can cultivate crops. He can do trade. But he must not do any servitude (like a dog).

उत्तमैरुत्तमैर्नित्यं संबंधानाचरेत्सह ।
निनीषुः कुलमुत्कर्षमधमानधमांस्त्यजेत् ॥

One must always forge relations with better and better families. This way, your own clan will keep improving. One must break ties with rogues.

आचार्यश्च पिता चैव माता भ्राता च पूर्वजः ।
नार्ते नाप्यवमंतव्या सज्जनेन विशेषतः ॥

AchAryashca pitA chaiva mAtA bhrAtA cha pUrvajaH ।
nArte na api avamantavyA sajjanena visheShataH ॥

Even when we are faced with lot of misery, we should not speak ill about our father, mother, brother or any ancestors. A virtous person whould take extra care not to do so.

अनित्यो विजयो यस्मात् दृश्यते युध्यमानयोः ।
पराजयश्च संग्रामे तस्माद्युद्धं विवर्जयेत् ॥

anityo vijayo yasmAt dRushyate yudhyamAnayoH ।
parAjayashca saMgrAme tasmAdyuddhaM vivarjayet ॥

Victory in a battle is a matter of chance. You may win or lose. So, one must not wage wars. Sooner or later, you will lose one of them.

अद्भिर्गात्राणि शुध्यन्ति मनः सत्येन शुध्यति ।
विद्यातपोभ्यां भूतात्मा बुद्धिर्ज्ञानेन शुध्यति ॥

adbhiH gAtrANi shudhyanti manaH satyena shudhyati ।
vidyA tapobhyAm bhUtAtma buddhiH jnAnena shudhyati ॥

Water cleanses the body parts. Mind is cleansed by truth. Education and penance will cleanse the human soul. Intellect is cleansed by knowledge.

अकामस्य क्रिया काचिद्दृष्यते नेह कर्हिचित् ।
यद्यद्धि कुरुते किंचित् तत्तत् कामस्य चेष्टितम् ॥

akAmasya kriyA kAchit dRuShyate na iha karhichit ।
yadyadi kurute kinchit tat tat kAmasya cheShTitam ॥

What can be achieved someone lacking desire? There is nothing that seems to be possible. Whatever has been done seems to have its roots in desire.
