सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - काम भोग वैराग्य

परिव्राट् कामुकशुनामेकस्यां प्रमदातनौ ।
कुणपः कामिनी भक्ष्यमिति तिस्रो विकल्पनाः ॥

A female body is lying there. A dos sees it as food. A pervert sees it as a means to satisfy his wanton. A mendicant considers it as a dead body.

pathi patitam asthi dRuShTvA sparshabhayAd anyamArgato yAti ।

When you see a bone along the path, you are worried about touching it and becoming dirty (unholy) and change your path. But you are unaware of thousands of bones (and other such impurities) in his own body.

पततु नभः स्फुटतु मही चलतु गिरयो मिलन्तु वारिधयः।

Let the skies fall, earth shatter, mountains move, oceans merge or let the world be turned upside down. How does it matter to a person who has no greed (or wishes).

In the forest of sensory pleasures, the mad elephant of sense organs is running wild and destroying everything. One must control that elephant with the hook of knowledge.

A pond without mire, an assembly without wicked men, a poem without harsh letters are all beautiful. Likewise a mind without indulging in sensory pleasures is beautiful.

Oh King, attachments in this world are far from being permanent. Even your own body leaves you one day. What more can be said about your wife, children and others.

One must never get too attached to anyone or anything. One must not get too attached to one's own body; what can one say about other people.

One must not highlight death or birth. As a servant to time, one must simply obey orders.

सभारंजनशतक - सांत्वम्

नादातव्यं न दातव्यं न कर्तव्यं च किंचन ।
सांत्वमेकं प्रयोक्तव्यं सर्वं तस्य वशे जगत् ॥

In order to rule the world, one need not be a miser, nor give away everything, need not do anything special. It is enough to keep doing good and the rest come automatically.

पद्मनन्दनस्य वैराग्य शतक - पाप पुण्य

नापत्यानि न वित्तानि न सौधानि भवन्त्यहो ।
मृत्युना नीयमानस्य पुण्यपापे परं पुरः ॥

na apatyAni na vittani na saudhAni bhavanti aho ।
mRutyunA nIyamAnasya puNya pApo paraM puraH ॥

Sons, wealth or buildings will not come in handy when death drags you away from this world. In the after life, only the good-deeds and sins you committed come with you.

नयस्य विनयो मूलं विनयः शास्त्रनिश्चयः ।
विनयो हींद्रियजयस्तद्युक्तः शास्त्रमृच्छति ॥

nayasya vinayo mUlam vinayaH shAstra nishcayaH ।
vinayo hi indrijayaH tadyuktaH shAstramRucChati ॥

Humility is the root of all morality. Humility comes from understanding and sticking to the scriptures. Humility is also the result of controlling one's senses. One who is able to do that, he will be able to study the scriptures also.

नन्दंत्युदित आदित्ये नन्दंत्यस्तमिते रवौ ।
आत्मनो नावबुध्यन्ते मनुष्या जीवितक्ष्ययम् ॥

Atmano na avabudhyante manuShyA jIvita kShayam ॥

People rejoice at sunrise and sunset. They are not aware of the reduction in their lifetime.

नंदंति मंदाः श्रियमप्यनित्यां
    परं विषीदंति विपद्गृहीताः ।
विवेकदृष्ट्या चरतां नराणां
    श्रियो न किंचित् विपदो न किंचित् ॥

nandanti mandAH shriyamapi anityAm
    paraM viShIdanti vipat gRuhItAH ।
vivekadRuShTyA caratAM narANAM
    shriyo na kinchit vipado kinchit ॥
Idiots rejoice when they get wealth and grieve when they have to face troubles. For the wise men, what is wealth and what are troubles.

न जीवनाशोऽस्ति हि देहभेदे
    मिथ्यैतदाहुर्म्रियते किलेति ।
जीवस्तु देहांतरितः प्रयाति
    दशार्धतैवास्य शरीरभेदः ॥

na jIva nAshaH asti hi dehabhede
     mithya etad AhuH mriyate kileti ।
jIvastu dehAntaritaH prayAti
    dashArdhataivAsya sharIrabhedaH ॥

When the soul changes the body, there is no loss of life. One must not lie that there is death. When the soul changes form, the body unites with the five forces of nature.

Lust, wanton or greed will not be conquered by satisfying it. It is like trying to douse a fire by adding ghee. It will only grow stronger.

If you want to grow always, then keep thinking about Dharma (moral code of life) always. Dharma is the only thing that follows you in the after life. Wealth and women will never be yours for ever. They are very fickle.

धर्मार्थं यस्य वित्तेहा वरं तस्य निरेहता ।
प्रक्षालनाद्धि पंकस्य श्रेयो न स्पर्शनं नृणाम् ॥

dharmArthaM yasya vittehA varaM tasya nirehatA ।
prakShAlanAddhi pankasya shreyo na sparshanam nRuNAm ॥

If one wants wealth only so that he can spend it on Dharma (charity and other noble deeds), then it is better to give up the longing. It is better keep your feet clean by staying away from mud than clean it after getting dirty.

भागवतमाहात्म्य - वैराग्य

देहेऽस्थिमांसरुधिरेऽभिमतिं त्यज त्वं
    जायासुतादिषु सदा ममतां विमुंच ।
पश्यानिशं जगदिदं क्षणभंगनिष्ठं
    वैराग्यरागरसिको भव भक्तिनिष्ठः ॥

dehe asthi mAmsa rudhire abhimati tyaja tvaM
    jAyAsutAdiShu sadA mamatAM vimunca ।
pashyanisham jagadidaM kShaNabhanganiShTam
    vairAgya rAga rasikaH bhava bhakti niShTaH ॥

Give up your excessive longing for this body that is made up of bones, muscles and blood. Stop your yearning for your wife and kids. When you look at this world, always be aware that it is ephemeral. Lead the life with detached austerity and faith in God.

पद्मनन्दनस्य वैराग्यशतक - नरत्वं

दृष्यन्ते बहवः कलासु कुशलास्ते च स्फुरत्कीर्तये
    सर्वस्वं वितरन्ति ये तृणमिव क्षुद्रैरपि प्रार्थिताः ।
धीरास्तेऽपि च ये त्यजन्ति झटिति प्राणान् कृते स्वामिनो
    द्वित्रास्ते तु नरा मनः समरसं येषां सुहृद्वैरिणोः ॥

dRuShyante bahavaH kalAsu kushalAH te ca sphurat kIrtaye
    sarvasvaM vitaranti ye tRuNamiva kShudraiH api prArthitAH ।
dhIrAH te api ca ye tyajanti jhaTiti prANAn kRute svAmino
    dvitrAH te tu narA manaH samarasaM yeShAM suhRut vairiNoH ॥

You may find many people who are good at arts and whose fame has taken them places. You will find others who will give away all their wealth to the needy (even if they are undeserving) as if it were just a blade of grass. You will find courageous people who are ready to lay down their life without any hesitation for the sake of their masters. All these people are common. But you will find only two or three people in this entire world who treat both their enemies and well-wishers alike. That level of detachment is rare.

पद्मनन्दनस्य वैराग्यशतक - नरत्वं

दुष्प्राप्तं मकराकरे करतलाद्रत्नं निमग्नं यथा
    संसारेऽत्र तथा नरत्वमथ तत्प्राप्तं मया निर्मलम् ।
भ्रातः पश्य विमूढतां मम हहा नीतं यदेतन्मुदा
    कामक्रोध कुबोध मत्सर कुधीमायामहामोहतः ॥

duShprAptam makarAkare karatalAt ratnam nimagnaM yathA
    samsAre atra tathA naratvam atha tat prAptam mayA nirmalam ।
bhrAtaH pashya vimUDhatAM mama hahA nItam yad etan mudA
    kAma krodha kubodha matsara kudhImAyA mahAmohataH ॥

Once a gem slips from hand into the sea, it is impossible to get it back. Similarly, one can if you lose the gem of human life in worldly affairs if he is stupid and gets drawn into lust, anger, ill-advice, jealousy, greed.

विवेकचूडामणि - मनुष्यत्वं

दुर्लभं त्रयमेवैतद्दैवानुग्रहहेतुकम् ।
मनुष्यत्वं मुमुक्षुत्वं महापुरुषसंश्रयः ॥

durlabhaM trayam eva etat daivAnugraha hetukam ।
manuShyatvam mumukShutvam mahApuruSha samshrayaH ॥

Getting these three together is matter of great luck and god's grace - human life, longing for salvation and kinship of virtuous people.

दाराः पुत्रेषु रताः पुत्राः पितृधनपरिग्रहव्यग्राः ।

The wives are worried about the sons. The sons are thinking about their inheritance. The mother is resigned to grief. Who is there to help the man who has gone to the after worlds?

तृष्णासूचीविनिर्भिन्नं सिक्तं विषयसर्पिषा ।
रागद्वेषानले पक्वं मृत्युरश्नाति मानवम् ॥

tRuShNAsUchi vinirbhinna siktaM viShaya sarpiShA ।
rAga dveSha anale pakvaM mRutyuH ashnAti mAnavam ॥

Death cooks a man's body like this - pierce it by the needle of greed, fry it in the ghee of sensory pleasures and heat it in the fire of attachment and hatred. At the end man is finished with his life.

रामायण - उत्तरकाण्ड - विप्रयोगो हि तैर्ध्रुवम्

तस्मात् पुत्रेषु दारेषु मित्रेषु च धनेषु च ।
नातिप्रसंगः कर्तव्यो विप्रयोगो हि तैर्ध्रुवम् ॥

tasmAt putreShu dAreShu mitreShu ca dhaneShu ca ।
na atiprasangaH kartavyo viprayogaH hi taiH dhruvam ॥

One must not attach himself too much to children, wives, friends and wealth. All the above are bound to depart from you sooner or later.

त्रयाणामेकभावानां यो न पश्यति वै भिदां ।
सर्वभूतात्मनां ब्रह्मन् स शान्तिमधिगच्छति ॥

sarvabhUtAtmAnAm brahman sa shantim adhigachChati ॥

When one stops noticing the difference between the three - Creator, Preserver and Destroyer; and sees the universal cosmic spirit in everyone/everything - then he naturally attains peace.

तज्ज्ञानं प्रशमकरं यदिंद्रियाणां
    तज्ज्ञेयं यदुपनिषत्सु निश्चितार्थम् ।
ते धन्या भुवि परमार्थनिश्चितेहाः
    शेषास्तु भ्रमनिलये परिभमन्तः ॥

tat jnAnaM prashamakaraM yad indriyANAm
    tat jneyaM yad upaniShatsu niShcitArtham ।
te dhanyA bhuvI paramArtha nishcitehAH
    sheShAstu bhramanilaye paribhramantaH ॥

That is knowledge that can arrest the speed at which our senses drive our mind. The subject of our studies should be to know more about the cosmic spirit mentioned in the Upanishats. There are some lucky people in this world who know all about the spirit. The rest of them are wandering in the illusion of knowing it.

त्यक्तव्यो ममकारस्त्यक्तुं यदि शक्यते नासौ ।
कर्तव्यो ममकारः किं तु स सर्वत्र कर्तव्यः ॥

tyaktavyo mamakAraH atyaktum yadi shakyate na asau ।
kartavyo mamakAraH kim tu sa sarvatra kartavyaH ॥

One must denounce all kinds of attachment. It is not possible he must develop attachment towards all objects alike.
