भागवत - भगवानेक एवैष

भगवानेक एवैष सर्व क्षेत्रेष्ववस्थितः ।
अमुष्य दुर्भगत्वं वा क्लेशो वा कर्मभिः कुतः ॥

- भागवत

bhagavAn eka eva eSha sarva kShetreShu avasthitaH ।
amuShya durbhatvam vA klesho vA karmabhiH kutaH ॥

- bhAgavata

There is only one God. He is present every where and inside each being - living or non-living. That being so, how can he ever have misery, misfortune o any form of trouble. We perceive these feelings because we look at ourselves in isolation and miss the big picture.

भजगोविंद स्तोत्र - भगवद्गीता किंचिदधीता

भगवद्गीता किंचिदधीता
    गंगाजलवकणिका पीता ।
सकृदपि यस्य मुरारिसमर्चा
    कुरुते तस्य यमोऽपि न चर्चाम् ॥

bhagavadgIta kinchidadhItA
    gangAjalavakaNikA pItA ।
sakRudapi yasya murArisamarchA
    kurute tasya yamo api na charchAm ॥

Even if you read the Bhagavadgita even a little, drink a little water from Ganga, worshiped Vishnu a little - Yama (God of death) will not think about you.

To be born again, to die again, to sleep once again in the womb of the mother - this is the rule of the world. There is lot of misery in this world. Oh Murari, please release me from this cycle.

पथि धावन्निह पतितो रोदिष्यंबाकरावलंबाय ।
पतितोद्धारणसमये किं न स्मरसि त्वमात्मानम् ॥

patita uddhAraNa samaye kim na smarasi tvam AtmAnam ॥

Oh! Krishna, you are playing the role of a small kid who has fallen down while running and is crying to get mother's attention. You want her to come and help you get up. Do you not remember your own plight when your devotees cry for help when they are stuck in this world?

भगवद्गीता - प्रयतात्मनः

पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति ।
तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः ॥

- भगवद्गीता

patram pushpam phalam tOyam yO mE bhakthyA prayacchati ।
tadaham bhaktyupahRutam ashnAmi prayatAtmanaH ॥

If you offer me anything with pure earnest devotion, I shall accept. It may be leaves, flowers, fruits or water. (as told by Lord Krishna)

नृणां जन्मसहस्रेण भक्तौ प्रीतिर्हि जायते ।
कलौ भक्तिः कलौ भक्तिः भक्त्या कृष्णः पुरः स्थितः ॥

nRuNAm janma sahasreNa bhaktau prItiH hi jAyate ।
kalau bhakthiH kalau bhakthiH bhakthyA KrishnaH puraH sthitaH ॥

- bhAgavata mAhAtmya

Oh! King, after thousands of births will one get to understand the true meaning of devotion towards God. Devotion alone is the means to please him in the epoch of Kali. Only through devotion can one see Krishna standing in front of them.

भागवत - नृप

नृणां निःश्रेयसार्थाय व्यक्तिर्भगवतो नृप ।
अव्ययस्याप्रमेयस्य निर्गुणस्य गुणात्मनः ॥

- भागवत

nRuNAm niHshreyasArthAya vyaktiH bhagavato nRupa ।
avyayasya aprameyasya nirguNasya guNAtmanaH ॥

- bhAgavata

A king should be working selflessly only with the best interest of the subjects in his mind. He has to behave as if people can see indestructible, immeasurable, perfect (without any bad qualities) God through him.

अप्पय्य दीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक - विषय सुख

निध्यायसि विषयसुखं न ध्यायसि विषममस्य परिपाकम् ।
बंधुं तमेव चिंतय बंधुं मोक्तुं च यः क्षमते ॥

- अप्पय्य दीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक

nidhyAyasi viShayasukham na dhyAyasi viShamam asya paripAkam ।
bandhum tameva chintaya bandhum mOktum cha yaH kShamate ॥

- appayya dIkShitasya vairAgya shataka

You are attaching yourself to worldly pleasures, not fully understanding the misery that follows. You should be thinking about God who alone can help you both attain attachment and detachment. He is the only attachment that one must have.

कुवलयानंद - लक्ष्मि

निद्राति स्नाति भुंक्ते चलति कचभरं शोषयत्यंतरास्ते
    दीव्यत्यक्षैर्न चायं गदितुमवसरो भूय आयाहि याहि ।
इत्युद्दंडैः प्रभूणामसकृदधिकृतैर्वारितान् द्वारि दीनान्
    अस्मान् पश्याभ्धकन्ये सरसिहरुचामंतरंगैरपांगैः ॥

nidrAti snAti bhunkte chalati kachabharam shoShayati antarAste
    vIvyati akShaiH na chAyam gaditum avasaro bhUya ayAhi yAhi ।

    asmAn pashya abdhikanye sarasiharuchAm antarangaiH apAngaiH ॥

When we go to the king, the sentries holding a stick stop (poor) us at the gate. They say that the king is sleeping, taking bath, eating, walking, drying his hair, wants to be alone, is gambling. Now is not a time to talk. They ask us to go away now and come back later. Oh! daughter of the ocean (Lakshmi) please look at us with the corner of your lotus like eyes (as pleasant as).

भागवत - न कुतश्चन बिभ्यति

नारायणपराः सर्वे न कुतश्चन बिभ्यति ।
स्वर्गापवर्गनरकेष्वपि तुल्यार्थदर्शिनः ॥

nArAyaNaparAH sarve na kutaH cha na bibhyati ।
svarga apavarga narakeShu api tulya artha darshinaH ॥

Real devotees of God do not fear anything. They treat heaven, misery or hell likely.

विश्वगुणादर्श - किमिह कमनीयं न कमलम्

निवस्तां वा कृत्तिं निवसतु चिरं वा पितृवने
    शिवस्तावद्धत्तामहिगणमथाप्येष सुभगः ।
परीतं शैलालैरुषितमपि पंकेषु मलिना
    मलीनां बिभ्राणं किमिह कमनीयं न कमलम् ॥

nivastAm vA kRuttiM nivasatu chiraM vA pitRuvane
    shivaH tAvat dhattA mahigaNam athApi eSha subhagaH ।
parItam shaiva alairuShitamapi pankeShu malinA
    malInAm bibhrANam kimaha kamanIyaM na kamalam ॥

Lord Shiva wears animal hide, lives in a cemetery, has a snake around the neck - still he is so attractive and auspicious. The Lotus plant may be covered with moss and lichen, lives/blooms in mire, sprayed with discards of the bees - still it does looks beautiful.

भागवत - संसारिः

न ह्यतोऽन्यः शिवः पंथा विशतः संसृताविह ।
वासुदेवे भगवति भक्तियोगो यतो भवेत् ॥

- भागवत

na hi ataH anyaH shivaH panthA vishataH saMsRutAviha ।
vAsudeve bhagavati bhaktiyogo yato bhavet ॥

If there is a path available for people that leads them to devotion towards God, then there is no better path than this.

महिम्नः स्तोत्र - शिव

नमो नेदिष्ठाय प्रियदव दविष्ठाय च नमो
    नमः क्षोदिष्ठाय स्मरहर महिष्ठाय च नमः ।
नमो वर्षिष्ठाय त्रिनयन यविष्ठाय च नमो
    नमः सर्वस्मै ते तदिदमतिसर्वाय च नमः ॥

- महिम्नः स्तोत्र

namo nediShThAya priyadava daviShThAya cha namo
    namaH kShodiShThAya smarahara mahiShThAya cha namaH ।
namo varShiShThAya trinayana yaviShThAya ca namo
    namaH sarvasmai te tat idam ati sarvAya cha namaH ॥

I salute to the forest loving God who is both very near and very far. I salute to the greed killing God who is both very small and very big. I salute to God with the three eyes who very old and for ever young. I salute to Him who is all this and much more.

भागवत - प्रीयतेऽमलया भक्त्या

न दानं न तपो नेज्या न शौचं न व्रतानि च ।
प्रीयतेऽमलया भक्त्या हरिरन्यद् विडंबनम् ॥

na dAnam na tapo nejyA na shoucham na vratAni cha ।
prIyate amalayA bhaktyA hariH anyad viDambanam ॥

- bhAgavata

God is not pleased with charity, penance, rituals, cleanliness, or fasting. He is pleased only by pure devotion. Everything else is a mere joke.

भागवत - भक्त

न तथा ह्यघवान् राजन् पूयेत तप आदिभिः ।
यथा कृष्णार्पितप्राणस्तत्पूरुषनिषेवया ॥

- भागवत

na tathA hi aghavAn rAjan pUyeta tapa AdibhiH ।
yathA kRuShNArpita prANaH tat pUruSha niShevayA ॥

- bhAgavata

Oh! King, a sinner can not redeem himself by doing penances. But he can redeem himself by serving devotees who have offered their lives to the service of God (and follow their path).

भागवत - कैवल्य

न किंचित् साधवो धीरा भक्ता ह्येकान्तिनो मम ।
वांछंत्यपि मया दत्तं कैवल्यमपुनर्भवम् ॥

- भागवत

na kinchit sAdhavo dhIrA bhaktA hi ekAntino mama ।
vAnChanti api mayA dattam kaivalyam apunarbhavam ॥

- bhAgavata

The courageous, noble devotees of mine who seek solitude do not wish for anything. Not even heaven or the release from eternal cycle of births - both of which I can bestow on them.

भागवत - वासुदेव

न कामकर्मबीजानां यस्य चेतसि संभवः ।
वासुदेवैकनिलयः स वै भागवतोत्तमः ॥

- भागवत

na kAma karma bIjAnAm yasya chetasi sambhavaH ।
vAsudevaika nilayaH sa vai bhAgavatottamaH ॥

- bhAgavata

He is a real devotee whose mind does neither entertain seeds of greed nor worry about the consequences of one's actions. His mind is completely occupied by thoughts about God.

विश्वगुणादर्श - वृषगिरीशभक्तिः

धुनोति निबिडं तमः परिलुनाति पापाटवीं
    तनोति च मनोरथानुपचिनोति नानोत्सवान् ।
अनक्ति च पुनः पुनर्ननु मनः सुधानिर्झरैः
    व्यनक्ति परिओपक्त्रिमं वृषगिरीशभक्तिः शुभम् ॥

- विश्वगुणादर्श - वृषगिरीशभक्तिः

dhunoti nibiDam tamaH parilunAti pApa aTavIm
    tanoti cha manorathAn upachinoti nAnotsavAn ।
anakti cha punaH punaH nanu manaH sudhAnirjharaiH
    vyanakti paripaktrimaM vRRiShagirIsha bhaktiH shubham ॥

If one has strong devotion towards God, it will illuminate thick darkness, destroy the forest of sins, expands thoughts about God, gives various kinds of happiness. It will flood the mind again an again with elixir so that it can remain happy for ever.

चिंता स्तोत्र - त्वत्पादपंकजास्वादजीवितं

धर्मार्थकाममोक्षेषु नेच्छा मम कदाचन ।
त्वत्पादपंकजास्वादजीवितं दीयताम् मम ॥

dharma artha kAma mokSheShu na icChA mama kadAchana ।
tvat pAda pankaja AsvAda jIvitam dIyatAm mama ॥

- chintAstotra

Oh God! I am not interested in the four aspirations of mankind namely - Dharma, Wealth, Lust and salvation. All I want is to live by your lotus feet. Please grant this wish of mine.

भागवत माहात्म्य - धर्मं भजस्व सततं

धर्मं भजस्व सततं त्यज लोकधर्मान्
    सेवस्व साधुपुरुषान् जहि कामतृष्णाम् ।
अन्यस्य दोषगुणचिन्तनमाशु मुक्त्वा
    सेवाकथरसमहो नितरां पिब त्वम् ॥

dharmam bhajasva satatam tyaja lokadharmAn
    sevasva sAdhupuruShAn jahi kAmatRuShNAm ।
anyasya doShaguNachintanam Ashu puktvA
    sevAkathArasam aho nitarAM piba tvam ॥

- bhAgavata mAhAtmya

Always follow Dharma in its purest form. Do not follow what is defacto which changes from time to time and from place to place. Serve noble men (mendicants). Give up greed to get more and lust. Stop finding faults in others. Spend your time in serving others and listening to tales about God.

भक्तिरसायन - कृष्ण

दौर्भाग्यमिन्द्रियाणां कृष्णे विषये हि शाश्वतिके ।
क्षणिकेषु पापकरणेष्वपि सज्जन्ते यदन्यविषयेषु ॥

- भक्तिरसायन

daurbhAgyam indriyANAm kRuShNe viShaye hi shAshvatike ।
kShaNikeShu pApakaraNeShu api sajjante yat anyaviShayeShu ॥

- bhaktirasAyana

It is very unfortunate that the senses choose to indulge in all things that are temporary and which could lead a man to Sin. They should have indulged themselves in everything to do with Lord Krishna - see him, listen to him, chant his name and so on. This is the only kind of indulgence that is free from sin.

विश्वगुणादर्श - अभयं

दोषेभ्यो नैव भेतव्यं दृढा चेद्भक्तिरुच्यते ।
तिमिरेभ्यो न हि भयं दीपश्चेल्लभ्यते महान् ॥

- विश्वगुणादर्श - अभयं

doShebhyo naiva bhetavyam dRuDhA chet bhaktiH uchyate ।
timirebhyo na hi bhayam dIpaH chet labhyate mahAn ॥

One need not be afraid of lapses (in his methods of rituals) id the devotion towards God is strong and true. No one will be afraid of darkness when he has the greatest lamp in his hand.

विश्वगुणादर्श - हरिभक्तिः

दुःखं च जन्मदुरितं च दृढामविद्यां
    हा हन्त हन्ति परमा हरिभक्तिरेका ।
एकोऽपि राघवशरः किल सप्त सालान्
    शैलं रसातलमपि त्वरया बिभेद ॥

- विश्वगुणादर्श

duHkhaM cha janmaduritaM cha dRuDham avidyAm
    hA hanta hanti paramA haribhaktirekA ।
eko api rAghavasharaH kila sapta sAlAn
    shailam rasAtalam api tvarayA bibheda ॥

- vishvaguNAdarsha

Devotion towards God is alone enough to mitigate misery, endless cycle of births and ignorance.
One arrow from Lord Rama was enough to penetrate seven Sal trees as well as the underworlds all the way down to Rasatala. Such is the power of God and seeking His refuge is enough to get us out of misery.

भागवत - प्रधानः

देहेंद्रियप्राणमनोधियां यो
    जन्माप्ययक्षुद्भयतर्षकृच्छ्रैः ।
संसारधर्मैरविमुह्यमानः
    स्मृत्या हरेर्भागवत प्रधानः ॥

- भागवत - प्रधानः

deha indriya prANa manaH dhiyAm yo
    janma apyaya kShud bhaya tarSha kRucChraiH ।
samsAra dharmaiH avimuhyamAnaH
    smRutyA hareH bhAgavata pradhAnaH ॥

- bhAgavata

He is said to have understood Bhagavata only when he can detach himself from love towards his body, senses, life, mind, intellect and other worldly feelings like birth, death, hunger, fear and thirst. In other words, understanding Bhagavata completely will get you closer to the goal of detachment.

भागवत - भगवत् दर्शन

दयया सर्वभूतेषु संतुष्ट्या येनकेन वा ।
सर्वेन्द्रियोपशान्त्या च तुष्यत्याशु जनार्दनः ॥

- भागवत - भगवत् दर्शन

dayayA sarva bhUteShu santuShTyA yena kena vA ।
sarvensdriya upashAntyA cha tuShyatyAshu janArdanaH ॥

- bhAgavata

There are three ways to please God - showing indiscriminate compassion towards every body, getting satisfied with what one has by what ever means (having no more wants) or by curbing all senses.

हरेर्नाम कलौयुगे

ते सभाग्या मनुष्येषु कृतार्था नृप निश्चितम् ।
स्मरंति ये स्मारयंति हरेर्नाम कलौयुगे ॥

te sabhAgyA manuShyeShu kRutArthA nRupa nishchitam ।
smaranti ye smArayanti hareH nAma kalau yuge ॥

Oh! King, In the Epoch of Kali, only those who remember and chant God's holy name will be fortunate. Also those people who encourage others to do so.

भक्तिरसायन - भगवद्धर्म

द्रुतस्य भगवद्धर्मात् धारावाहिकतां गता ।
सर्वेशे मनसो वृत्तिः भक्तिरित्यभिधीयते ॥

- भक्तिरसायन

drutasya bhagavat dharmaat dhArAvAhikatAm gatA ।
srveshe manaso vRuttiH bhaktiH iti abhdhIyate ॥

- bhaktirasAyana

What is devotion? When one's mind dissolves itself (and flows like a torrent) in God thinking about the immeasurable qualities (like compassion) of Him - it is called Devotion.

यावत्कृष्ण न ते जनाः

तावद्रागादयःस्तेनास्तावत्कारागृहं गृहम् ।
तावन्मोहो अंघ्रिनिगडो यावत्कृष्ण न ते जनाः ॥

tAvat rAgAdayaH stenAH tAvat kArAgRuhaM gRuham ।
tAvat moho anghri nigaDo yAvat kRuShNa na te janAH ॥

Oh Krishna, when you are not with people thieves like sensory pleasures will steal your life. House will be like a prison. Attachment will be like heel chains.

गोरक्षसिद्धांत संग्राह - भगवद्पाद

तर्किका घटपटेति रटेयुः
    शब्दिकाः खफछठेति पठेयुः ।
मादृशां तु सततं स्मरणियौ
    चन्द्रचूडचरणौ रमणीयौ ॥

- गोरक्षसिद्धांत संग्राह - भगवद्पाद

tarkikA ghaTapata iti raTeuH
    shAbdikAH khaphaChaTha iti paTheyuH ।
mAdRushAm tu satatam smaraNIyau
    chandrachUDacharaNau ramaNIyau ॥

- gorakShasiddhAnta sangraha

Let the logicians shout from top of their voices to prove others wrong. Sweet talkers will use rhyming letters. I am not interested in either. People like me are happy just remembering the refreshing foot of the Lord (the one with Moon on his head - Shiva).

वेदान्तदेशिक - त्वयि रक्षति रक्षकैः किमन्यैः

त्वयि रक्षति रक्षकैः किमन्यैः
    त्वयि चारक्षति रक्षकैः किमन्यैः ।
इति निश्चितधीः श्रयामि नित्यं
    नृहरे वेगवतीतटाश्रयं त्वाम् ॥

tvayi rakShati rakShakaiH kim anyaiH
    tvayi cha arakShati rakShakaiH kim anyaiH ।
iti nishcita dhIH shrayAmi nityam
    nRuhare vegavatItaTAshrayam tvAm ॥

If you protect, then what is the use of any other protector? If you do not protect, then what is the use of other protectors? So, I will only seek refuge under you.

महिम्नः स्तोत्र - देवः

त्रयी सांख्यं योगः पशुपतिमतं वैष्णवमिति
    प्रभिन्ने प्रस्थाने परमिदमदः पथ्यमिति च ।
रुचीनां वैचित्र्यात् ऋजुकुटिलनानापथजुषां
    नृणामेको गम्यस्त्वमसि पयसामर्णव इव ॥

- महिम्नः स्तोत्र

trayI saankhyam yogaH pashupatimatam vaiShnavamiti
    prabhinne prasthAne param idam adaH pathyamiti cha ।
ruchInAm vaichitryAt Ruju kuTila nAnA pathajuShAm
    nRuNAm eko gamyaH tvamasi payasAm arNava iva ॥

Oh God! there are many scriptures like vedas, saankhya and yoga. People read them and form their own philosophies. They think that their way is the right way and others are wrong. They call one method as straight and others are crooked. But all the paths actually lead to you only. Just like water from all rivers reach the sea following their own paths.
