सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - न अविष्णुः पृथिवीपतिः

नानृषिः कुरुते काव्यं नारुद्रः क्रमपाठकः ।
नादेवांशो ददात्यन्नं नाविष्णुः पृथिवीपतिः ॥

Only people who are sages (in parts) can be poets. Only people with qualities of Rudra can chant vedas. Only people who have godly qualities will be able to give food to others. Only people with qualities of Vishnu can rule and be good kings.

भारतमञ्जरी - सत्यम्

न सत्यं केवलं सत्यमनृतं न तथानृतम् ।
हितं यत् सर्वलोकस्य तत्सत्यं शेषमन्यथा ॥

na satyam kevalaM satyam anRutaM na tathA anRutam ।
hitam yat sarvalokasya tat satyam sheSham anyathA ॥

Just the facts will not make the complete truth. Anything that is not true is not false by default. There are always shades of grey. One thing is clear – what is good for the entire world is the truth, rest everything is not-truth.

न कूपखननं युक्तं प्रदीप्ते वह्निना गृहे ।
चिंतनीया हि विपदामादावेव प्रतिक्रिया ॥

It is not wise to start digging a well when your house is on fire. One must be prepared for calamities well in advance. When they strike, one must only effect a plan that is already made.

Dharma does not stand solely on basis of debate and logic. It has to explained on the basis of what is there in the Vedas. Even the knowledge of all the sages is derived from the Vedas.

One's sins will not be washed away by rituals like fasting. Only thing that is achieved by fasting is wearing of the body made of flesh and blood.

yAvadeva bhavet kalpaH tAvat shreyaH samAcharet ॥

Illness or Death do not wait for a man to accumulate good Karma by doing good things over time. So, do not wait longer. Keep on doing good as and when such opportunity arises.

It is not considered Dharma just because old people, people with white hair, rich people or your relatives said so. The sages have observed what is considered moral from ages and spoken that to be the Dharma. We value that the most.

न भार्यया समं मित्रं न च धर्मो दयासमः ।
न स्वातंत्र्यसमं सौख्यं गार्हस्थ्यान्नाश्रमो वरः ॥

na svAtantrya samam saukhyam gArhasthyaat na aashramo varaH ॥

There is no better friend than a wife. No dharma better than compassion. Nothing better than being free. No state of life is better than running a household (being the man of the house).

न देवो विद्यते काष्ठे न पाषाणे न मृण्मये ।
भावे हि विद्यते देवस्तस्माद्भावो हि कारणम् ॥

bhAve hi vidyate devaH tasmAd bhAvo hi kAraNam ॥

God can not be found in a wood piece, stone or a mud idol. It is the belief that makes us feel the presence of God. Hence, only the feeling matters – not the material.

नवे वयसि यः शान्तः स शान्त इति मे मतिः ।
धातुषु क्षीयमाणेषु शान्तिः कस्य न जायते ॥

I consider a person as calm only when he is calm at a young age. When one is old and capabilities diminished, who is not calm?

न देवाय न विप्राय न बंधुभ्यो न चात्मने ।
कृपणस्य धनं याति वह्नितस्करपार्थिवैः ॥

kRupaNasya dhanam yAti vahni taskara pArthivaiH ॥

The wealth that a miser accumulates is not used for Gods, not brahmins, not his relatives – not even for himself. It will most likely be consumed by fire, or a thief or confiscated by the king.

सुभाषितावलि - लोभिहस्तगतं धनं

न गुह्यगोपने शक्तं न च दंशनिवारणे ।
शुनः पुच्छमिव व्यर्थं लोभिहस्तगतं धनं ॥

na guhya gopane shaktam na cha dansha nivAraNe ।
shunaH pucChamiva vyartham lobhi hasta gatam dhanam ॥

Wealth that goes into the hands of a miser is of no use. It is like a tail of a dog – that can neither hide its private parts not can it keep away the flies.

धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाणां यस्यैकोऽपि न विद्यते ।
अजागलस्तनस्येव तस्य जन्म निरर्थकम् ॥

dharma artha kAma mokShANAm yasya ekaH api na vidyate ।
ajAgala stanasyeva tasya janma nirarthakam ॥

Dharma, wealth, pleasures and salvation are the four goals of mankind. If one is not able to achieve any one of them in his life, then his whole life is a waste – just like the flesh at the neck of a goat. It looks like an udder, but does not have milk.

समयोचितपद्यरत्नमालिका - श्मशाने मतिः

धर्माख्याने श्मशाने च रोगिणां या मतिर्भवेत् ।
सा सर्वदैव तिष्ठेच्छेत् को न मुच्येत बंधनात् ॥

dharmAkhyAne shmashAne cha rogiNAm yA matiH bhavet ।
sA sarvadA eva tiShThet chet ko na muchyate bandhanAt ॥

That wisdom that is realized during a discourse, at a funeral or when one is sick – if it stayed with a person through out his life, then who will not be liberated from all bondages?

Of all the qualities, efficiency is the best. Of all the wealth, knowledge is the best. Of all the profits, health is the best. Of all the happiness, being satisfied is the best.

द्विविधो जायते व्याधिः शारीरो मानसस्तथा ।

parasparaM tayoH janma nirdvandvam na upalabhyate ॥

There are two kinds of origins for disease – one is from he body and the other is mental. They are interdependent one each other. Without one, the other does not exist. All diseases are part physical and part mental. Solve one and the other gets solved by itself.

दुःखोपघाते शारीरे मानसे चाप्युपस्थिते ।
यस्मिन्न शक्यते कर्तुं यत्नस्तं नानुचिंतयेत् ॥

yasminna shakyate kartum yatnastam nAnu chintayet ॥

When there is some grief to the mind or any wound to the body that we cannot do anything about – one must just stop thinking about it. That is best way to deal with the unsolvable problem.

दुर्जनस्य च सर्पस्य वरं सर्पो न दुर्जनः ।
सर्पो दशति काले तु दुर्जनस्तु पदे पदे ॥

durjanasya cha sarpasya varaM sarpo na durjanaH ।
sarpo dashati kAle tu durjanastu pade pade ॥

Between a wicked person and a snake, the snake is better. A snake bites occasionally only when provoked. But a wicked person does so often without any provocation.

दान्तस्य किमरण्येन तथाऽदान्तस्य भारत ।
यत्रैव निवसेद्दान्तस्तदरण्यं स चाश्रमः ॥

daantasya kim araNyena tathA adAntasya bhArata ।
yatraiva nivaset dAntaH tat araNyam sa cha AshramaH ॥

For a person with restraint, an abundant forest is nothing because he does not wish to own anything more than what he needs. For a person with out restraints, the forest again is not enough because the entire forest can not satiate him. Where ever the ascetic lives, that is a forest – that is also a hermitage.

द्रोग्धव्यं न च मित्रेषु न विश्वस्तेषु कर्हिचित् ।

drogdhavyam na cha mitreShu na vishvasteShu karhichit ।
yeShAm cha annAni bhunjIta yatra syAt pratishrayaH ॥

One must never cheat a friend, any one who believes in you, who have given you food or whose refuge you have taken.

दुष्टा भार्या शठं मित्रं भृत्यश्चोत्तरदायकः ।
ससर्पे च गृहे वासो मृत्युरेव न संशयः ॥

duShTA bhAryaa shaTham mitraM bhRutyaH cha uttaradAyakaH ।
sasarpe cha gRuhe vAsaH mRutyureva na saMshayaH ॥

Death is certain (soon) for a person whose wife is wicked, whose friends cheat and whose servants talk back to him. He is in same level of danger as sleeping in a house which has snakes in it.

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - दोषोऽपि गुणतां याति

दोषोऽपि गुणतां याति प्रभोर्भवति चेत्कृपा ।
अंगहीनोऽपि सूर्येण सारथ्येयोजितोऽरुणः ॥

doShopi guNatAm yAti prabhoH bhavati chet kRupA ।
angahIno api sUryeNa sArathi aayojitaH aruNaH ॥

It does not matter even if one has any handicap. Under an able master even those people can perform well. Surya has Aruna as his charioteer even though he is a cripple. He has never let down his master.

द्यूतं पुस्तकवाद्ये च नाटकेषु च सक्तता ।

The following six are known to be greatest obstacles to learning – gambling, addicted to reading books (novels) or listening to music, watching plays, women, laziness and sleep.

दरिद्रता धीरतया विराजते
    कुरूपता श्रीलतया विराजते ।
कुभोजनं चोष्णतया विराजते

Downside of poverty can to compensated by courage. If someone is not beautiful, then they can wear some ornaments. If food is not tasty, it can be remedied to some extent by heating. Clothes of bad quality can be kept clean to impress.

तुल्यवर्णच्छदः कृष्णः कोकिलैः सह संगतः ।
केन व्याख्यायते काकः स्वयं यदि भाषते ॥

kena vyAkhyAyate kAkaH svayam yadi bhAShate ॥

A Crow can mingle with nightingales since they have the same plumage – black. No one will notice the difference until the crow starts to speak by itself. Only a fool would speak and reveal his ignorance in a congregation of wise men.

जानीयात्संगरे भृत्यान् बांधवान् व्यसनागमे ।
आपत्कालेषु मित्राणि भार्यां च विभवक्षये ॥

One knows the true character of a servant during war, of relatives when you get sick, of friends when you are in trouble and of your wife when you have lost all money (and fortune).

There are four doors through which adharma can enter us – private parts, stomach, hands and speech. If one guards these doors carefully at all the time, he will be known as Dharmajna and avoid all sins. All sins are related to man losing control of these doors.

घृतकुंभसमा नारी तप्तांगारसमः पुमान् ।

A woman is like a pot of ghee and man is like a ball of fire. If they come in contact, it will create havoc. Hence wise people will not keep them together in the same place.
