समयोचितपद्यरत्नमालिका - दहंति कायं

कांतावियोगः स्वजनापमानो
    रणस्य शेषः कुनृपस्य सेवा ।
दरिद्रभावो विषमा सभा च
    विनाग्निमेते प्रदहंति कायम् ॥

kAntA viyogaH svajana apamAna
    raNasya sheShaH kunRupasya sevA ।
daridrabhAvo viShamA sabhA cha
    vinA agnim ete pradahanti kAyam ॥

The following can burn our body without fire – departure of the wife, humiliation by our own people, unfinished battle, having to serve a bad king, poverty and a unfriendly assembly (of people who cannot decide right from wrong).

भागवत - मृत्यु

द्वौ सम्मताविह मृत्यू दुरापौ
    यद् ब्रह्मसंधारणया जितासुः ।
कलेवरं योगरतो विजह्याद्
    यद्ग्रणीर्वीरशयेऽनिवृत्तः ॥

dvau sammatau iha mRutyU durApau
    yad brahma sandhAraNayA jita asuH ।
kalevaram yogarato vijahyAd
    yad agraNIH vIrashayeH anivRuttaH ॥

There are two difficult ways of dying honourably. Both are very difficult. One is to be able to reconcile with the supreme being and leave this body as is and die by performing Yoga (that enables you to control your breath). The other is to be in the fore-front of an army and never return from battlefield.
