सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - प्राप्तकालो न जीवति

नाकाले म्रियते जंतुः विद्धः शरशतैरपि ।
कुशकंटकविद्धोऽपि प्राप्तकालो न जीवति ॥

When your time is not yet up, even if one throws a hundred arrows at you – nothing happens to you. However, when it is up, even a blade of grass can kill you.

Who can keep arrogance out even after becoming wealthy? Who can claim that all their troubles are over? Whose mind has not been broken by a lady? Who does a king like? Who can cheat death for ever? Which beggar has ever gotten any respect? Who has come back to right path after having strayed to the path of sin?

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - मृत्यु

मृत्योर्बिभेषि किं बाल न स भीतं विमुंचति ।
अद्यवाब्दशतांते वा मृत्युर्वै प्राणिनां ध्रुवः ॥

mRutyoH bibheShi kim bAla na sa bhItam vimunchati ।
adya vA abda shatAnte vA mRutyuH vai prANinAm dhruvaH ॥

Oh boy! why are you afraid of death? Death does not spare those who are afraid. It may happen right now or after a hundred years. But it is certain.

Be brave. Death is certain for every being that takes birth. It is born along with the being. It may happen right now or after a hundred years. But it is certain.

कलेवरं योगरतो विजह्याद्

There are two difficult ways of dying honourably. Both are very difficult. One is to be able to reconcile with the supreme being and leave this body as is and die by performing Yoga (that enables you to control your breath). The other is to be in the fore-front of an army and never return from battlefield.

दुर्मंत्रिणं कमुपयान्ति न नीतिदोषाः
    संतापयन्ति कमपथ्यभुजं न रोगाः ।

    कं स्त्रीकृता न विषयाः परितापयन्ति ॥

Which bad minister is immune to the after effects of his ill advice? Who does not fall sick after eating bad food? Who does not become arrogant when he becomes rich? Who does death spare? Who does not get agitated (excited) by the pleasure a woman can give.

Death is certain for every being that is born. It is the same truth every where. There is no way to get around this truth. But if one is guaranteed a good re-birth and fame, then who would not like death?

A tree grows back after beign cut. The moon always grows back after the reducing cycle. Wise men know this and understand that life is similar. So, they do not grieve the departure of their loved ones.

Death cooks a man's body like this - pierce it by the needle of greed, fry it in the ghee of sensory pleasures and heat it in the fire of attachment and hatred. At the end man is finished with his life.
