सर्वेषामपि जन्तूनामिह स्वात्मैव वल्लभः ।
इतरेऽपत्यवित्ताद्यास्तद्वल्लभतयैव हि ॥

itare apatya vittaadyaH tad vallabhatayaiva hi ॥

All the beings of this world love themselves the most. All other attachments - children, wealth and others have their root in loving themselves.

सुशीलाः साधवो यत्र नारायणपरायणाः ॥

sadhrIchIno hi ayam loke panthAH kShemaH akuto bhayaH ।
sushIlaaH sAdhavo yatra nArAyaNa parAyaNAH ॥

It is safe to follow the path that noble, virtuous devotees of Narayana follow. That path will lead us to God and is causes no fear.

तेषामुदेत्यघं काले रोगः पातकिनामिव ॥

santi hi asAdhavaH loke durmaitrAH ChadmaveShiNaH ।

There are rogues in this world who become bad friends and who are roaming in disguise (of noble men). Their sin will catch up with them at appropriate time - like how disease catches up with other sinners.

भूतेषु कृतमैत्राय शुश्रूषाभिरताया च ॥

The elixir of knowledge has to be bestowed on someone who shows dedication, devotion, humility, free from jealousy, has compassion towards all beings, willing to serve and willing to listen.

संयोज्याक्षिपते भूयस्तथा भूतानि भूतकृत् ॥

vAyuryathA ghanAnIkam tRuNam tUlam rajAmsi cha।

A strong wind can scatter clouds, grass, cotton and sand together to different directions. The creator can do the same with all the beings (his creations)

सर्वेऽर्थकामाः क्षणभंगुरायुषः
कुर्वन्ति मर्त्यस्य कियत्प्रियं चलाः ॥

rAyaH kalatraM pashavaH sutAdayo
gRuhA mahI kunjarakoshabhUtayaH ।
sarve artha kAmAH kShaNa bhangura AyuShaH
kurvanti martyasya kiyat priyam chalAH ॥

How much can all the material pleasures like money, wife, animals, children, house, land, elephants, wealth and other such things that can be bought with money? Life itself is ephemeral, lasting for less than a second. What can these impermanent things do to make us happy?

रजोभिः समसंख्याकाः पार्थिवैरिह जंतवः ।
तेषां ये केचनेहंते श्रेयो वै मनुजादयः ॥

rajobhiH samam sankhyaakAH pArthivaiH iha jantavaH ।
teShAm ye kechana ihante shreyo vai manujAdayaH ॥

In this world there are as many beings as particles of dust. Among them only a handful of them are capable of thinking about their own welfare. Mankind is one among them.

यावद् भ्रियेत जठरं तावत् स्वत्वं हि देहिनाम्।
अधिकं योऽभिमन्येत स स्तेनो दंडमर्हति ॥

yAvat bhriyate jaTharam tAvat svatvam hi dEhinAM।
adhikam yaH abhimanyeta saH stEnO danDamarhati ॥

One must accumulate wealth as much needed to fill his stomach. If one accumulates more than that, he is stealing; and should be punished.

यदृच्छयोपलब्धेन संतुष्टो मितभुञ् मुनिः ।
विविक्तशरणः शांतो मैत्रः करुण आत्मवान् ॥

yadRucChayaH upalabdhena santuShTo mitabuk muniH ।
vivikta sharaNaH shAnto maitraH karuNa AtmavAn ॥

He is considered to have known his self if he can - be satisfied by windfall that happens once in a while (not greedy), eats less, lives a life of a hermit, likes to live by himself, peaceful, greets everyone friendly and shows compassion towards everyone.

यदि स्याद् गृहे माता पत्नी वा पतिदेवता ।
व्यंगे रथ इव प्राज्ञः को नामासीत दीनवत् ॥

yadi na syAd gRuhe mAtA patnI vA patidevataa ।
vyange ratha iva prAjnaH ko nAma AsIta dInavat ॥

A household without a mother or a chaste wife is crippled like a broken chariot. It makes one truly miserable. Who in their right mind would continue to live in that?

यदा देवेषु वेदेषु गोषु विप्रेषु साधुषु ।
धर्मे मयि च विद्वेषः स वा आशु विनश्यति ॥

yadA deveShu vedeShu goShu vipreShu sAdhuShu ।
dharme mayi cha vidveShaH sa vA Ashu vinashyati ॥

Destruction comes fast at you when you go against the Gods, the vedas, cows, scholars, virtuous people, dharma and the supreme being.

यथागदं वीर्यतममुपयुक्तं यदृच्छया ।
अजानतोऽप्यात्मगुणं कुर्यान्मंत्रोऽप्युदाहृतः ॥

yathAgadam vIryatam amupayuktam yadRucChayaa ।
ajAnato api AtmaguNam kuryAt mantraH api udAhRutaH ॥

A good medicine will be beneficial to the body even if consumed by accident. Just like that a hymn will do good to a person chanting it without knowing the true meaning of the same.

यथामयोंऽगे समुपेक्षितो नृभि-
र्न शक्यते रूढपदश्चिकित्सितुम् ।
यथेंद्रियग्राम उपेक्षितस्तथा
रिपुर्महान् बद्धबलो न चाल्यते ॥

yathA mayo ange samupekShito nRubhiH
na shakyate rUDhapadaH chikitsitum ।
yathA indriya grAma upekShitaH tathA
ripuH mahAn baddhabalo na chAlyate ॥

The following things when neglected will grow into monstrous proportions and become unconquerable - disease in our body, attraction of the group of our sense organs, an enemy.

मृत्युर्जन्मवतां वीर देहेन सह जायते ।
अद्यवाब्दशतांते वा मृत्युर्वै प्राणिनां ध्रुवः ॥

mRutyuH janmavatAm vIra dehena saha jAyate ।
adya vA abda shatAnte vA mRutyuH vai prANinAm dhruvaH ॥

Be brave. Death is certain for every being that takes birth. It is born along with the being. It may happen right now or after a hundred years. But it is certain.

बहिर्जातविरागाय, शान्तचित्ताय दीयताम् ।
निर्मत्सराय शुचये यस्याहं प्रेयसां प्रियः ॥

bahir jAta virAgAya shanta chittaya dIyatAm ।
nirmatsarAya shuchaye yasyaaham preyasAm priyaH ॥

Give it (knowledge) to a person who is not interested in the outside world, whose mind is still and clear, who is not jealous and who is clean (in his mind) and one who likes me (God) a lot.

प्रायेण मनुजा लोके लोकतत्त्व विचक्षणाः ।
समुद्धरंति ह्यात्मानमात्मानैवाशुभाशयात् ॥

prAyeNa manujA loke lokatattva vichakShaNAH ।
samuddharanti hi AtmAnam AtmAnaiva ashubhAshayAt ॥

At some point, wise people of the world will understand the nature (and rules) of the world and save themselves from the misery they are in.

परोऽप्यपत्यं हितकृद् यथौषधं
स्वदेहजोऽप्यामयवत् सुतोऽहितः ।
छिंद्यात् तदंगं यदुतात्मनोऽहितं
शेषं सुखं जीवति यद्विसर्जनात् ॥

paro api apatyam hitakRud yathA auShadham
svadehajaH api amayavat suto ahitaH ।
chindyAt tadangam yad uta Atmano ahitam
sheSham sikham jIvati yad visarjanAt ॥

Even if he is someone else's son, if he helps you (in time) like a medicine then he is to be considered one's own. On the other hand, if your own son is causing troubles then you should cut ties with him. Just like cutting a problematic body part will relieve the rest of the body from pain - rest of the family will be relieved if you cut the ties with such a bad child.

परस्वभावकर्माणि न प्रशंसेन्न गर्हयेत् ।
विश्वमेकात्मकं पश्यन् प्रकृत्या पुरुषेण च ॥

para svabhAva karmANi na prashamset na garhayet ।
vishvam ekAtmaM pashyan prakRutyA puruSheNa cha ॥

When one observes other people's nature or work, he should neither praise or berate. One must always have the unified view of the world that it is made up of Prakruti and run by Purusha. Individual players have no independent role - and hence should not be accredited for the work.

नैतत् समाचरेज्जातु मनसापि ह्यनीश्वरः ।
विनश्यत्याचरन् मौढ्याद् यथा रुद्रोऽब्धिजं विषम् ॥

naitat samAcharet jAtu manasApi hi anIshvaraH ।
vinashyati Acharan mauDhyAd yathA rudro abdhijam viSham ॥

It is foolishness if someone tries to imitate Lord Shiva and drink poison. One must not even imagine doing feats that are beyond one's abilities (and out of the world).

नेह यत्कर्म धर्माय न विरागाय कल्पते ।
न तीर्थपदसेवायै जीवन्नपि मृतो हि सः ॥

neha yat karma dharmAya na virAgAya kalpate ।
na tIrthapada sevAyai jIvannapi mRuto hi saH ॥

Our actions must be to uphold Dharma, or to lead us to detachment (asceticism), or to serve noble wise men (who are worthy of service). If they do not meet any of the above, then we are as good as dead.
