सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - नष्टाः

केचिदज्ञानतो नष्टाः केचिन्नष्टाः प्रमादतः ।
केचित् ज्ञानावलेपेन केचिन्नष्टैस्तु नाशिताः ॥

kechit ajnAnato naShTAH kechit naShTAH pramAdataH ।
kechit jnAnAvalepena kechit naShTaistu nAshitaH ॥

Some losses happen due to ignorance. Some due to a hot mind. Some losses happen because we illusion of knowledge. Some losses will destroy us altogether.

अप्पय्यदीक्षित वैराग्यशतक - अज्ञान

नीतिज्ञा नियतिज्ञा वेदज्ञा अपि भवन्ति शास्त्रज्ञाः ।
ब्रह्मज्ञा अपि लभ्याः स्वाज्ञानज्ञानिनो विरलाः ॥

- अप्पय्यदीक्षित वैराग्यशतक

nItijnA niyatijnA vedajnA api bhavanti shAstrajnAH ।
brahmajnA api labhyAH sva ajNana jnAnino viralAH ॥

- appayya dIkShita vairAgya shataka

You can find people who know it all about morality, future, the vedas. You can even find people who know about Brahman - the creator. But it is very rare to find people who will know about their own ignorance.

लोके एतस्मिन् भ्रमन्

जनो वै लोके एतस्मिन्न विद्याकामकर्मभिः ।
उच्चावचासु गतिषु न वेद स्वांगतिं भ्रमन् ॥

jano vai loke etasmin na vidyA kAma karmabhiH ।
ucchAvachAsu gatiShu na veda svAMgatiM bhraman ॥

People are walking around in this world without knowing what kind of life they are going to get next. It could be a better one or worse. They are ridden with ignorance, desire and consequences of prior actions.

प्रबोधसुधाकर - अज्ञान

पथि पतितमस्थि दृष्ट्वा स्पर्शभयादन्यमार्गतो याति ।
नो पश्यति निजदेहं चास्थि सहस्रावृतं परितः ॥

pathi patitam asthi dRuShTvA sparshabhayAd anyamArgato yAti ।
no pashyati nijadeham cha asthi sahasrAvRutam paritaH ॥

- bhojaprabandha

When you see a bone along the path, you are worried about touching it and becoming dirty (unholy) and change your path. But you are unaware of thousands of bones (and other such impurities) in his own body.

उपमितिभवप्रपंच - कूपमण्डूकः

यो न निर्गत्य निःशेषां विलोकयति मेदिनीं |
अनेकाद्भुतवृत्तांतां स नरः कूपदर्दुरः ||

If a person never gets out of his home (home town) and sees the world full of surprises, then he is to be considered as a frog in a well.

तंत्रवार्तिक - कृष्णशुक्ल विवेक

महताऽपि प्रयत्नेन तमिस्रायां परामृशन् |
कृष्णशुक्लविवेकं हि न कश्चिदधिगच्छति ||

In pitch darkness, one can not know the difference between white or black no matter how hard you try. The same difficulty exists when trying to know right from wrong if you are in the darkness of ignorance.
