अप्पय्यदीक्षित वैराग्यशतक - अज्ञान

नीतिज्ञा नियतिज्ञा वेदज्ञा अपि भवन्ति शास्त्रज्ञाः ।
ब्रह्मज्ञा अपि लभ्याः स्वाज्ञानज्ञानिनो विरलाः ॥

nItijnA niyatijnA vedajnA api bhavanti shAstrajnAH ।
brahmajnA api labhyAH sva ajNana jnAnino viralAH ॥

You can find people who know it all about morality, future, the vedas. You can even find people who know about Brahman - the creator. But it is very rare to find people who will know about their own ignorance.

वैराग्य शतक - भक्तिस्तरुणेंदुशेखरे

महेश्वरे वा जगतामधीश्वरे
     जनार्दने वा जगदंतरात्मनि ।
न वस्तुभेद प्रतिपत्तिरस्ति मे
     तथापि भक्तिस्तरुणेंदुशेखरे ॥

maheshvare vA jagatAmadhishvare
     janArdane vA jagat antarAtmani ।
na vastu bheda pratipattirasti me
    tathApi bhaktiH taruNa indu shekhare ॥

Lord Shiva, who is the owner of this world, or Lord Vishnu who is in every one's conscience - I do not differentiate between them. Both are equal to me. But when it comes to worshiping, I worship the God with young moon on his head (Shiva). A mendicant would definitely identify with Shiva because Lord Shiva himself is said to have led a very ascetic life.

अप्पय्य दीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक - शरणं चरणं महेशस्य

भव्यमभव्यं वा नः प्रलिखतु वेधाः सुदुर्मेधाः ।
सव्यमसव्यं वा नः शरणं चरणं महेशस्य ॥

bhavyam abhavyam vA naH pralikhatu vedhAH sudurmedhAH ।
savyam asavyam vA naH sharaNam charaNam maheshasya ॥

Let the creator write prosperity or misery in my fate. I would not bother.Either way I will bow down to the left or the right foot of the Lord. It does not matter whether it is misery or prosperity when the destination is the Lord himself.

अप्पय्य दीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक - विषय सुख

निध्यायसि विषयसुखं न ध्यायसि विषममस्य परिपाकम् ।
बंधुं तमेव चिंतय बंधुं मोक्तुं च यः क्षमते ॥

nidhyAyasi viShayasukham na dhyAyasi viShamam asya paripAkam ।
bandhum tameva chintaya bandhum mOktum cha yaH kShamate ॥

You are attaching yourself to worldly pleasures, not fully understanding the misery that follows. You should be thinking about God who alone can help you both attain attachment and detachment. He is the only attachment that one must have.

अप्पय्य दीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक - विषयानि

विषयाननुकूलयितुं विषयिणि हृदये विधीयतां यत्नः ।
दृशि देयमौषधं को दृश्ये दत्त्वा सुखी भवति ॥

viShayAn anukUlayitum viShayiNi hRudaye vidhIyatAm yatnaH ।
dRushi deyam auShadham ko dRushye dattvA sukhI bhavati ॥

If one intends to make the external stimuli pleasant then he has to look inwards and condition the receptors in his heart. If the mind is clean and conditioned, it will not get anxious every time the eyes are attracted to something. Who can be happy if the medicine given to the eyes is applied to the objects the eye sees?

अप्पय्य दीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक - यमपुरि

वंगाः कथमंगाः कथमित्यनुयुंक्ते वृथा देशान् ।
कीदृक् कृतान्तपुरमिति कोऽपि जिज्ञासते लोकः ॥

vangAH katham agAH katham iti anuyunkte vRuthA deshAn ।
kIdRuk kRutAnta puram iti ko api jijnAsate lokaH ॥

How is Vanga kingdom? How is the Anga kingdom? People ask such questions about far of lands. No one in this world are contemplating on where they would be after death. How would that kingdom of death be?

पद्मनन्दनस्य वैराग्य शतक - वैराग्य

मनो न वैराग्यतरंगितं चेत्
    वृथा तदा दानतपः प्रयासः ।
लावण्यमंगे यदि नांगनानां
    मुधा तदा विभ्रमवल्गितानि ॥

mano na vairAgyatarangitam chet
    vRuthA tadA dAna tapaH prayAsaH ।
lAvaNyam ange yadi na anganAnAm
    mudhA tadA vibhramavalgitAni ॥

If austerity is not imbibed into the mindset, then there is no use of doing charity, penance and other efforts (towards salvation). All moves and tricks used by beautiful ladies to please you are a waste if they don't have charm.

अप्पय्यदीक्षितस्य चैराग्य शतक - मृत्यु

भुक्ता बहवो दारा लब्धाः पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च ।
नीतं शतमप्यायुः सत्यं वद मर्तुमस्ति मनः ॥

bhuktA bahavo dArA labdhAH putrAScha pautrAScha ।
nItaM shatam api AyuH satyam vada martum asti manaH ॥

After enjoying many wives, having lots of children and grand children, having lived over hundred years - tell me the truth: Do you now wish to die?

पद्मनन्दनस्य वैराग्य शतक - मोह

भार्येयं मधुराकृतिर्मम मम प्रीत्यान्वितोऽयं सुतः
स्वर्णस्यैष महानिधिर्मम ममासौ बंधुरो बांधवः ।
रम्यं हर्म्यमिदं ममेत्थमनया व्यामोहितो मया
मृत्युं पश्यति नैव दैवहतकः क्रुद्धं पुरश्चारिणम् ॥

bhAryA iyam madhura AkRutiH mama mama prItyAnvitH ayam sutaH
svarNasya eShA mahAnidhiH mama mama asau bandhuro bAndhavaH ।
ramyam harmyam idam mama itthamanayA vyAmohito mAyA
mRutyuM pashyati naiva daiva hatakaH kruddhaM purashchAriNam ॥

This is my beautiful wife. This is my son whom I love so much. This treasure of gold is mine. These are my people, my friends and relatives. This house is mine. A man who thinks like this is under the grasp of illusion and does not see the truth - which is right in front of him as 'death'.

जनार्धन भट्टस्य वैराग्य शतक - वैराग्य मूलः

पुत्रमित्रवसुबंधुपुरंध्री-
    ग्रामधामरहिताः किल लोकाः ।
हन्त तेऽपि न भवन्ति विरक्ताः
    तेन मे भवति चेतसि चित्रम् ॥

putra mitra vasu bandhu puraM dhrI
    grAma dhAma rahitAH kila lokAH ।
hanta te api na bhavanti viraktAH
    tena me bhavati chetasi citram ॥

People don't have children, friends, money, relatives, wife, town that he call his own, a refuge - nothing. In spite of the situation, they can not still follow austerity.

अप्पय्य दीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक - वैराग्य

पततु नभः स्फुटतु मही चलतु गिरयो मिलन्तु वारिधयः।
अधरोत्तरमस्तु जगत् का हानिर्वीतरागस्य ॥

patatu nabhaH sphuTatu mahI chalatu giriyo milantu vAridhayaH ।
adharottaramastu jagat kA hAniH vItarAgasya ॥

Let the skies fall, earth shatter, mountains move, oceans merge or let the world be turned upside down. How does it matter to a person who has no greed (or wishes).

पद्मनन्दनस्य वैराग्य शतक - पाप पुण्य

नापत्यानि न वित्तानि न सौधानि भवन्त्यहो ।
मृत्युना नीयमानस्य पुण्यपापे परं पुरः ॥

na apatyAni na vittani na saudhAni bhavanti aho ।
mRutyunA nIyamAnasya puNya pApo paraM puraH ॥

Sons, wealth or buildings will not come in handy when death drags you away from this world. In the after life, only the good-deeds and sins you committed come with you.

पद्मनन्दनस्य वैराग्यशतक - नरत्वं

दृष्यन्ते बहवः कलासु कुशलास्ते च स्फुरत्कीर्तये
    सर्वस्वं वितरन्ति ये तृणमिव क्षुद्रैरपि प्रार्थिताः ।
धीरास्तेऽपि च ये त्यजन्ति झटिति प्राणान् कृते स्वामिनो
    द्वित्रास्ते तु नरा मनः समरसं येषां सुहृद्वैरिणोः ॥

dRuShyante bahavaH kalAsu kushalAH te ca sphurat kIrtaye
    sarvasvaM vitaranti ye tRuNamiva kShudraiH api prArthitAH ।
dhIrAH te api ca ye tyajanti jhaTiti prANAn kRute svAmino
    dvitrAH te tu narA manaH samarasaM yeShAM suhRut vairiNoH ॥

You may find many people who are good at arts and whose fame has taken them places. You will find others who will give away all their wealth to the needy (even if they are undeserving) as if it were just a blade of grass. You will find courageous people who are ready to lay down their life without any hesitation for the sake of their masters. All these people are common. But you will find only two or three people in this entire world who treat both their enemies and well-wishers alike. That level of detachment is rare.

पद्मनन्दनस्य वैराग्यशतक - नरत्वं

दुष्प्राप्तं मकराकरे करतलाद्रत्नं निमग्नं यथा
    संसारेऽत्र तथा नरत्वमथ तत्प्राप्तं मया निर्मलम् ।
भ्रातः पश्य विमूढतां मम हहा नीतं यदेतन्मुदा
    कामक्रोध कुबोध मत्सर कुधीमायामहामोहतः ॥

duShprAptam makarAkare karatalAt ratnam nimagnaM yathA
    samsAre atra tathA naratvam atha tat prAptam mayA nirmalam ।
bhrAtaH pashya vimUDhatAM mama hahA nItam yad etan mudA
    kAma krodha kubodha matsara kudhImAyA mahAmohataH ॥

Once a gem slips from hand into the sea, it is impossible to get it back. Similarly, one can if you lose the gem of human life in worldly affairs if he is stupid and gets drawn into lust, anger, ill-advice, jealousy, greed.

अप्पय्यदीक्षितसय वैराग्य शतक - परलोक

दाराः पुत्रेषु रताः पुत्राः पितृधनपरिग्रहव्यग्राः ।
रोदनशरणा जननी परलोकगतस्य को बंधुः ॥

dArAH putreShu ratAH putrAH pitRu dhana parigrahavyagrAH ।
rodanasharaNA jananI paraloka gatasya ko bandhuH ॥

The wives are worried about the sons. The sons are thinking about their inheritance. The mother is resigned to grief. Who is there to help the man who has gone to the after worlds?

पद्मनंदन वैराग्य शतक - बुद्बुदभंगुरं धनं

ज्ञात्वा बुद्बुदभंगुरं धनमिदं दीपप्रकंपं वपुः
    तारुण्यं तरलेक्षणाक्षितरलं विद्युच्चलं दोर्बलं ।
रे रे जीव गुरुप्रसादवशतः किंचिद्विधेहि द्रुतं
    दानध्यानतपोविधानविषयं पुण्यं पवित्रोचितम् ॥

jnAtvA budbuda bhanguram dhanam idam dIpa prakampam vapuH
    tAruNyam taralekShaNa akShitaralam vidyccalam dorbalam ।
re re jIva guruprasAdavashataH kinchid vidheha drutam
    dAna dhyAna tapaH vidhAna viShayaM puNyaM pavitrocitam ॥

Wealth is as fickle as a bubble on water surface. The body is as uncertain as flick of a flame. Youth is as reliable as the trembling look from the corner of the eye of a damsel. The strength in your arms are like lightning. Given all these uncertainties, one must accumulate good karma as early as possible. Start doing some charity, meditation, penance and other good deeds to earn some good karma.
