मालविकाग्निमित्र - पुराणनव्योः

पुराणमित्येव न साधु सर्वं
    न चापि काव्यं नवमित्यवद्यम् ।
संतः परीक्ष्यान्यतरद्भजन्ते
    मूढः परप्रत्ययनेयबुद्धिः ॥

purANamiti eva na sAdhu sarvam
    na chApi kAvyaM navamiti avadyam ।
santaH parIkShya anyatarat bhajante
    mUDhaH parapratyaneyabuddhiH ॥

- mAlavikAgnimitra

Nothing is to be considered great just because it is old. Similarly, not all things new are to be considered lightly. Wise men will weigh each work and treat them appropriately. Only fools follow others.

मालविकाग्निमित्र - शत्रु संहार

अचिराधिष्ठितराज्यः शत्रुः प्रकृतिष्वरूढमूलत्वात् ।
नवसंरोपणशिथिलस्तरुरिव सुकरः समुद्धर्तुम् ॥

achirAdhiShThitarAjyaH shatruH prakRutiShu arUDhamUlatvAt ।
navasaMropaNa shithilaH taruH iva sukaraH samuddhartum ॥

- mAlavikAgnimitra

It is very easy to defeat an enemy who has usurped your kingdom just a few days ago. He would not have made his presence felt in the hearts of the people. Defeating him is as easy as uprooting a plant that we just planted recently.

मालविकाग्निमित्र - शिव

एकैश्वर्ये स्थितोऽपि प्रणतबहुफले यः स्वयं कृत्तिवासाः
    कान्तासंमिश्रदेहोऽप्यविषयमनसां यःपरस्ताद्यतीनां ।
अष्टाभिर्यस्य कृत्स्नं जगदपि तनुभिर्भिभ्रतो नाभिमानः
    सन्मार्गलोकनाय व्यपनयतु स वस्तामसीं वृत्तिमीशः ॥

ekaishvarye sthitopi pranata bahuphale yaH svayam kRutti vAsAH
     kAntA samishra dehaH api aviShaya manasAM yaH paraH tat yatInAm ।
AShTAbhiH kRutsnam jagadapi tanubhiH bhibhrato na abhimAnaH
    sanmArga lokanAya vyapanayatu sa vastaamasIm vRuttimIshaH ॥

- mAlavikAgnimitra

Let Lord Shiva lead our mind towards the right path of salvation by destroying the darkness with in. He is capable of bestowing any amount of wealth on any one who comes begging. But he himself dresses in animal hide. He is sharing half his body with his wife. Yet he is not interested in worldly pleasures; thereby he is the best among all saints (mendicants). He is protecting the entire world with eight of his forces. Yet he is not proud of the same.

मालविकाग्निमित्र - गुरुः

श्लिष्टा क्रिया कस्यचिदात्मसंस्था
    संक्रान्तिरन्यस्य विशेषयुक्ता ।
यस्योभयं साधु स शिक्षकाणां
    धुरि प्रतिष्ठापयितव्य एव ॥

shliShTA kriyA kasyachid AtmasaMsthA
    sankrAntiH anyasya visheShayuktA ।
yasya ubhayam sAdhu sa shikShaNAm
     dhuri pratiShThApayitavya eva ॥

- mAlavikAgnimitra

Some people can perform particular tasks very well. Some other people can teach very well but may not perform the task that well. If a person can do both, then he must be treated as the best of the teachers.

मालविकाग्निमित्र - सज्जन सङ्गः

मन्दोऽप्यमन्दतामेति संसर्गेण विपश्चितः |
पङ्कच्छिदः फलस्येव निकषेणाविलं पयः ||

- मालविकाग्निमित्र

Even a fool can learn some thing (and attain greatness) if he spends some time with the virtuous wise men. Even muddy water becomes clear when it comes in contact with a particular fruit - Strychnos Potatorum (that acts like a coagulant).

पात्रविशेषे न्यस्तं गुणांतरं व्रजति शिल्पमाधातुः |
जलमिव समुद्रशुक्तौ मुक्ताफलतां पयोदस्य ||

- मालविकाग्निमित्र

Under the able guidance of a teacher (who understands your strengths) even a stone can attain greatness. Just like a drop of pure water from the rain into a sea will be transformed into a pearl if it is nutured in an oyster.
