रामायण मञ्जरी - किष्किंदा - दूरस्थः

दूरस्थो ज्ञायते सर्वः पर्वते ज्वलनादिवत् ।
चूडामणिः शिरस्थोऽपि दृष्यते न स्वचक्षुषा ॥

dUrastho jnAyate sarvaH parvate javalanAdivat ।
chUDamaNiH shirastho api dRuShyate na sva chakShuShA ॥

When things are far away, its a different perspective. Hence we can see things clearly - like a fire lit on top of a hill. But sometimes things very close to us can not be seen - like the gem on our crown can never be seen by our own eyes (without a mirror).

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - दूरस्थः

दूरस्थोपि समीपस्थो यो यस्य हृदि वर्तते ।
यो यस्य हृदये नास्ति समीपस्थोऽपि दूरगः ॥

dUrastho api samIpastho yo yasya hRudi vartate ।
yo yasya hRudaye nAsti samIpastho api dUragaH ॥

Even if one is physically very far away from you, they are very close to you as long as you have them in your heart. On the other hand, if a person is not in your heart he can be considered to be distant even if he physically close.

ॠत्विक्पुरोहिताचार्यैर्मातुलातिथिसंश्रितैः
    बालवृद्धातुरैर्वैद्यैर्ज्ञातिसंबंधिबांधवैः ।

    दुहित्रा दासवर्गेण विवादं न समाचरेत् ॥

One must never have a harsh argument with the following - a priest, a brahmin, teacher, uncle, guest, those whom you have given refuge, children, old people, patients , doctors, relatives of your father, son-in-law, relatives of mother, mother, father, sister, daughter-in-law, brother, son, wife, daughter and servants.

कर्तव्यो भ्रातृषु स्नेहो विस्मर्तव्याः गुणेतराः ।
संबंधो बंधुभिः श्रेयान् लोकयोरुभयोरपि ॥

- दूतवाक्य

One must show love and affection towards brothers (relatives and friends in general). One must show leniency while dealing with their mistakes and shortcomings. Being so will bring good fortune both in this world as well as the other.
