महाभारत - सभा - श्रेयः समाचरेत्

न व्याधयो नापि यमः प्राप्तुं श्रेयः प्रतीक्षते ।
यावदेव भवेत् कल्पस्तावच्छ्रेयः समाचरेत् ॥

na vyAdhayo nApi yama prAptum shreyaH patIkShate ।
yAvadeva bhavet kalpaH tAvat shreyaH samAcharet ॥

Illness or Death do not wait for a man to accumulate good Karma by doing good things over time. So, do not wait longer. Keep on doing good as and when such opportunity arises.

यस्य नास्ति स्वयं प्रज्ञा केवलं तु बहुश्रुतः ।
न स जानाति शास्त्रार्थं दर्वी सूपरसानिव ॥

yasya nAsti svayaM prajnA kevalaM tu bahushrutaH ।
na sa jAnAti shAstra arthaM darvI sUparasAn iva ॥

One can not be called a wise man if he does not understand himself. He can only be called well read. He can not understand the deeper meanings of any scriptures - just like the spoon does not know the taste of the dish.

महाभारत - सभा - शत्रुपक्षं समृद्यंतं

शत्रुपक्षं समृद्यंतं यो मोहात् समुपेक्षते |
व्याधिराप्यायित इव तस्य मूलं छिनत्ति सः ||

One must not ignore the ascendancy of a rival. People are usually in denial when they hear about their rivals making good progress. If he does ignore, his enemies will finish him - much the same way as a long ignored disease would finish him.
