महाभारत - शान्ति - श्रियः


सहस्व श्रियमन्येषां यद्यपि त्वयि नास्ति सा ।
अन्यत्रापि सतीं लक्ष्मीं कुशला भुंजते सदा ॥

sahasva shriyam anyeShAm yadyapi tvayi nAsti sA ।
anyatrApi satIm lakShmIm kushalA bhunjate sadA ॥

If you see wealth (that you don't have) with others, don't feel jealous. Just live with it. You must understand that if you have done good things in the past, then you will be able to enjoy the wealth even if it does not belong to you.

महाभारत - श्वः कार्यमद्य कुर्वीत


श्वः कार्यमद्य कुर्वीत पूर्वाह्णे चापराह्णकम् ।
न हि प्रतीक्षते मृत्युः कृतमस्य न वा कृतम् ॥

shvaH kAryam adya kurvIta pUrvAhNe cha aparAhNakam ।
na hi pratIkShate mRutyuH kRutam asya na vA kRutam ॥

Do it today what needs to be done tomorrow, in the morning what needs to be done in the afternoon. When it is time, death does not wait to see if you have done all your duties or not yet.

लोकयात्रार्थमेवेह धर्मस्य नियमः कृतः ।
उभयत्र सुखोदर्कः इह चैव परत्र च ॥

One needs ropes and blinds to control a horse. One needs hooks to control an elephant. The king needs to follow his duties (Rajadharma) to control the dealings of the world.

मृदुमप्यवमन्यंते तीक्ष्णा दुद्विजते जनः ।
मा तीक्ष्णो मा मृदुर्भूस्त्वं तीक्ष्णो भव मृदुर्भव ॥

mRudum api avamanyante tIkShNA dudvijate janaH ।
mA tIkShNo mA mRudur bhUH tvam tIkShNo bhava mRuduH bhava ॥

One must not be too soft. People will ridicule them. One must not be too aggressive. People will be anxious around them. One must not be too soft or too aggressive always. One must be soft and aggressive as required.

It is not considered Dharma just because old people, people with white hair, rich people or your relatives said so. The sages have observed what is considered moral from ages and spoken that to be the Dharma. We value that the most.

द्विविधो जायते व्याधिः शारीरो मानसस्तथा ।
परस्परं तयोर्जन्म निर्द्वंद्वं नोपलभ्यते ॥

parasparaM tayoH janma nirdvandvam na upalabhyate ॥

There are two kinds of origins for disease – one is from he body and the other is mental. They are interdependent one each other. Without one, the other does not exist. All diseases are part physical and part mental. Solve one and the other gets solved by itself.

दुःखोपघाते शारीरे मानसे चाप्युपस्थिते ।
यस्मिन्न शक्यते कर्तुं यत्नस्तं नानुचिंतयेत् ॥

When there is some grief to the mind or any wound to the body that we cannot do anything about – one must just stop thinking about it. That is best way to deal with the unsolvable problem.

For a person with restraint, an abundant forest is nothing because he does not wish to own anything more than what he needs. For a person with out restraints, the forest again is not enough because the entire forest can not satiate him. Where ever the ascetic lives, that is a forest – that is also a hermitage.

उपस्थमुदरं हस्तौ वाक्चतुर्थी स धर्मवित् ॥

There are four doors through which adharma can enter us – private parts, stomach, hands and speech. If one guards these doors carefully at all the time, he will be known as Dharmajna and avoid all sins. All sins are related to man losing control of these doors.

गोशतादपि गोक्षीरं प्रस्थं धान्यशतादपि ।
प्रासादादपि खट्टार्धं शेषाः परविभूतयः ॥

Even if there are hundreds of cows, you need only very little milk. Even if you have hundreds of granaries, all you need a little food. Even if you have huge palace, all you need is half a bed to sleep in. Rest is to treated as if they belong to others.
