सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - नादत्तमुपतिष्ठते

सत्यं सत्यं मुनेर्वाक्यं नादत्तमुपतिष्ठते ।
अंबुभिः पूरिता पृथ्वी चातकस्य मरुस्थली ॥

satyam satyam munEH vAkyam na adattam upatiShThate ।
ambubhiH pUritA pRuthvI chAtakasya marusthalI ॥

It is very true what the ancient sages have spoken - What is not be yours, you will never get it. Even when the earth is so abundant with water, for the chataka bird it is as good as a desert. Chataka (Cucculus melanoleucus) is said to subsist only on rain water freshly poured from the clouds drinking it before it reaches the ground.

कुवलयानन्द - महतामुदारता

चातकस्त्रिचतुरान् पयःकणान्
    याचते जलधरं पिपासया ।
सोऽपि पूरयति विश्वमंभसा
    हन्त हन्त महतामुदारता ॥

The thirsty chataka bird begs the clouds to give it a couple of drops of water. The Clouds douse the entire earth in return. Really, the generosity of the virtuous people is worth appreciating.
