कुवलयानंद - लक्ष्मि

हालाहलो नैव विषं विषं रमा
    जनाः परं व्यत्ययमत्र मन्वते ।
निपीय जागर्ति सुखेन तं शिवः
    स्मृशन्निमां मुह्यति निद्रया हरिः ॥

hAlAhalo naiva viSham viSham ramA
    janAH param vyatyayam atra manvate ।
nipIya jAgarti sukhena tam shivaH
    smRushann imAm muhyati nidrayA hariH ॥

It is not halahala that is the poison, it is Lakshmi that is poison. People have understood it the other way around. Shiva is still able to live peacefully after having consumed halahala. But after touching Lakshmi, Hari was mesmerized into a sleep.

कुवलयानंद - मनुष्यः

कपिरपि च कापिशायनमदमत्तो वृश्चिकेन संदष्टः ।
अपि च पिशाचग्रस्तः किं ब्रूवो वैकृतं तस्य ॥

kapirapi cha kApishAyanam adamatto vRushchikena sandaShTaH ।
api cha pishAchagrastaH kim brUvo vaikRutam tasya ॥

It is first of all a monkey. On top it, it is drunk. A scorpion has stung it. To add to the chaos, it is possessed. One can only imagine what can happen. It is the state of the human world today - men, intoxicated by wealth, stung by ignorance and possessed by greed.

कुवलयानंद - लक्ष्मि

निद्राति स्नाति भुंक्ते चलति कचभरं शोषयत्यंतरास्ते
    दीव्यत्यक्षैर्न चायं गदितुमवसरो भूय आयाहि याहि ।
इत्युद्दंडैः प्रभूणामसकृदधिकृतैर्वारितान् द्वारि दीनान्
    अस्मान् पश्याभ्धकन्ये सरसिहरुचामंतरंगैरपांगैः ॥

nidrAti snAti bhunkte chalati kachabharam shoShayati antarAste
    vIvyati akShaiH na chAyam gaditum avasaro bhUya ayAhi yAhi ।
iti uddanDaiH prabhUNAm asakRut adhikRutaiH vAritAn dvAri dInAn
    asmAn pashya abdhikanye sarasiharuchAm antarangaiH apAngaiH ॥

When we go to the king, the sentries holding a stick stop (poor) us at the gate. They say that the king is sleeping, taking bath, eating, walking, drying his hair, wants to be alone, is gambling. Now is not a time to talk. They ask us to go away now and come back later. Oh! daughter of the ocean (Lakshmi) please look at us with the corner of your lotus like eyes (as pleasant as).

कुवलयानन्द - विद्वान्

विद्वानेव विजानाति विद्वज्जनपरिश्रमम् ।
न हि वंध्या विजानाति गुर्वीं प्रसववेदनाम् ॥

vidvAneva vijAnAti vidvajjana parishramam ।
na hi vandhyA vijAnAti gurvIm prasavavedanAm ॥

Only a wise man will be able to appreciate another wise man's efforts. Only a mother would know about the labour pain - not any body else.

कुवलयानन्द - पाप

भवन्ति नरकाः पापात् पापं दारिद्र्यसंभवम् ।
दारिद्र्यमप्रदानेन तस्माद्दानपरो भवेत् ॥

When one commits sin, he goes to hell. Sin is committed by people usually to escape poverty. Poverty is the result of greed because of which people do not give money to others. Hence one must generously give money to the needy (to indirectly prevent going to hell).

कुवलयानन्द - महतामुदारता

चातकस्त्रिचतुरान् पयःकणान्
    याचते जलधरं पिपासया ।
सोऽपि पूरयति विश्वमंभसा
    हन्त हन्त महतामुदारता ॥

The thirsty chataka bird begs the clouds to give it a couple of drops of water. The Clouds douse the entire earth in return. Really, the generosity of the virtuous people is worth appreciating.

कुवलयानन्द - राजसेव

राजसेवा मनुष्याणामसिधारावलेहनम् |
पञ्चाननपरिष्वङ्गो व्यालीवदनचुंबनम् ||

Serving a king is a risky business. It is as risky as licking the sharp end of a blade, hugging a lion or kissing a snake.

कुवलयानन्द - कृपणः

शरणं किं प्रपन्नानि विषवन्मारयन्ति वा |
न त्यज्यन्ते न भुज्यन्ते कृपणेन धनानि यत् ||

- कुवलयानन्द

A miser does not let go of his money. He will not spend it. He will not give it away in charity. Has he conquered wealth? Or wealth gotten into him like poison and does not let go of him until he is dead?
