हितोपदेश - मित्रलाभ - दान ज्ञान क्षमा त्याग

दानं प्रियवाक्सहितं ज्ञानमगर्वं क्षमान्वितं शौर्यम् ।
त्यागसहितं च वित्तं दुर्लभमेतच्चतुष्टयं लोके ॥

Charity with sweet words, knowledge without pride, bravery with forgiveness, wealth with generosity - all the above four are very rare in this world.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रसंप्राप्ति - दान प्रीति

तावत्प्रीतिर्भवेल्लोके यावद्दानं प्रदीयते ।
वत्सः क्षीरक्षयं दृष्ट्वा परित्यजति मातरं ॥

As long as people are generous, there will be love and affection in this world. Once people stop being generous, love vanishes. A calf will abandon the cow once the cow stops giving it milk.

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - वित्त त्याग

त्यागो गुणो वित्तवतां वितं त्यागवतां गुणः ।
परस्पर वियुक्तौतु वित्तत्यागौ विडंबना ॥

Generosity is the only quality that decorates the rich. Wealth is the only quality that decorates the generous. Both wealth and generosity are useless (laughable) without the other.

कुवलयानन्द - महतामुदारता

चातकस्त्रिचतुरान् पयःकणान्
    याचते जलधरं पिपासया ।
सोऽपि पूरयति विश्वमंभसा
    हन्त हन्त महतामुदारता ॥

The thirsty chataka bird begs the clouds to give it a couple of drops of water. The Clouds douse the entire earth in return. Really, the generosity of the virtuous people is worth appreciating.

रत्नाकरः किं कुरुते स्वरत्नैः
    विन्ध्याचलः किं करिभिः करोति |
श्रीखण्डखण्डैः मलयाचलः किं
    परोपकाराय सतां विभूतयः ||

What is the use of gems to an ocean? What do the forests of Vindhya have to gain from the famous elephants that roam them? Does the Malaya forests gain by the sandalwood trees that grow there? Noble men are always like that. Their actions always help others.
