सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - प्रयत्नः

प्रयत्ने समके केचिदेव स्युः फलभागिनः ।
क्षीरोदमथनाद्देवैरमृतं प्रापि नासुरैः ॥

kShIroda mathanAd devaiH amRutam prApi na asuraiH ॥

Even when many people put in the same efforts only a few actually attain the fruits. Such is the role of luck in all work. In the mighty churning of the ocean, the Gods got the elixir and the demons did not get it.

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - प्रयत्नः

उद्योगेन विना नैव कार्यं किमपि सिध्यति ।
न हि सुप्तस्य सिंहस्य प्रविशन्ति मुखे मृगाः ॥

udyogena vinA naiva kAryaM kimapi sidhyati ।
na hi suptasya simhasya pravishanti mukhe mRugAH ॥

Without effort no work will ever get done. Even for a ferocious lion, the deer will not go into its mount when it is sleeping.

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - दान अध्ययन

अंजनस्य क्षयं दृष्ट्वा वल्मीकस्य च संचयं ।
अवंध्यं दिवसं कुर्यात् दानाध्ययनकर्मसु ॥

anjanasya kShayam dRuShTvA valmIkasya cha sanchayam ।
avandhyam divasam kuryAt dAna adhyayana karmasu ॥

- subhAShitaratnabhANDAgAra

A person should learn about impermanence from these two. Collyrium applied to the eyelashes get washed away easily. Ants build the anthill only to let a snake live in it. After having seen this, one should not waste his time every day. He must engage in charity (giving) and introspective study.

प्रतिज्ञायौगंधरायण - यत्नाः

काष्ठादग्निर्जायते मथ्यमानात्
    भूमिस्तोयं खन्यमाना ददाति ।
सोत्साहानां नास्त्यसाध्यं नराणां
    मार्गारब्धाः सर्वयत्नाः फलंति ॥

- प्रतिज्ञायौगंधरायण

kAShThAt agniH jAyate mathyamAnAt
    bhUmiH toyam khanyamAnA dadAti ।
sotsAhAnAM nAsti asAdhyam narANAm
    mArgarabdhAH sarvayatnAH phalanti ॥

- pratijnAyaugandharAyaNa

Fire can be made from just twigs and nothing else by rubbing together. If one digs the earth with effort, he will get water. If a person has enough enthusiasm, nothing is impossible. When efforts are put in the right direction, then success is guaranteed.

शाबरभाष्य - इष्टसिद्धि

अर्के चेन्मधु विंदेत किमर्थं पर्वतं व्रजेत् ।
इष्टस्यार्थस्य संसिद्धौ को विद्वान् यत्नमाचरेत् ॥

arke chet madhu vindeta kimartham parvatam vrajet ।
iShTasya arthasya saMsiddhau ko vidvAn yatnam Acharet ॥

- shabara bhAshya

If one gets honey in the plant in the backyard, who will climb the mountain to get honey. They will not. Just like that, any scholar will not put any effort after (he thinks) he has learned all there is to learn.
