सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार – विद्याविघ्नकराणि षट्

द्यूतं पुस्तकवाद्ये च नाटकेषु च सक्तता ।
स्त्रीयस्तंद्री च निद्रा च विद्याविघ्नकराणि षट् ॥

dyUtam pustaka vAdye cha nAtakeShu cha saktatA ।
strIyaH tandrI cha nidrA cha vidyA vighnakAriNi ShaT ॥

The following six are known to be greatest obstacles to learning – gambling, addicted to reading books (novels) or listening to music, watching plays, women, laziness and sleep.

मृच्छकटिक - स्वभाव दोष

सस्यलंपटबलीवर्दो न शक्यो वारयितुं
    अन्यप्रसक्तकलत्रं न शक्यं वारयितुम् |
द्यूतप्रसक्तमनुष्यो न शक्यो वारयितुं
    योऽपि स्वाभाविकदोषो न शक्यो वारयितुम् ||

- मृच्छकटिक

One can not control a bull that is running towards green grass eager to eat it. One can not control a wife who is interested in some one else. One can not control a man who is addicted to gambling. One can not reform a person whose innate character is to be wicked. He is incorrigible.

मनुस्मृति - व्यसन

व्यसनस्य च मृतोश्च व्यसनं कष्टमुच्यते |
व्यसन्यधोऽधो व्रजति स्वर्यात्यव्यसनी मृतः ||

- मनुस्मृति

Between addiction and death, death is better. By death one may rise up to heaven. But with addiction there is only one way - down and down.

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - द्यूतासक्तः

धनक्षयः शिष्टगर्हा सदाचरविवर्जनम् ।
शतृभिः पीडनं चैव द्यूतासक्तधियां नृणाम् ॥

Being addicted to gambling will definitely have these effects on a person - loss of wealth, censure by virtuous people, shunning any virtuous conduct and even wrath from enemies.

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - द्यूत

द्यूतादनर्थः संरम्भो द्यूतात् स्नेहक्षयो महान् ।
पक्षाणां चापि महतां द्यूताद्भेदः प्रवर्तते ॥

- सुभाषितसुधानिधि

Gambling is the start of many bad habits leading to miserable times. It strains good friendships. It is known to cause rift even in otherwise strong cohesive groups (of friends).

मनु स्मृति - द्यूत

द्यूतमेतत्पुरा कल्पे दृष्टं वैरकरं महत् ।
तस्मात् द्यूतं न सेवेत हास्यार्थमपि बुद्धिमान् ॥

From history we have learnt that gambling begets enmity of great proportions. Hence a wise man will not indulge in gambling - not even for fun.
