सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - श्रीः

सा श्रीर्या न मदं कुर्यात्स सुखी तृष्णयोज्झितः ।
तन्मित्रं यत्र विश्वासः पुरुषः स जितेंद्रियः ॥

sA shrIH yA na madam kuryAt sa sukhI tRuShNa yo jjhitaH ।
tat mitram yatra vishvAsaH puruShaH sa jitendriyaH ॥

Money is called wealth only when it does not intoxicate you. You can be happy only when you don't have any desires. He is a friend only when he can be trusted. One can be called as a man only when he can control his senses.

सहस्व श्रियमन्येषां यद्यपि त्वयि नास्ति सा ।
अन्यत्रापि सतीं लक्ष्मीं कुशला भुंजते सदा ॥

If you see wealth (that you don't have) with others, don't feel jealous. Just live with it. You must understand that if you have done good things in the past, then you will be able to enjoy the wealth even if it does not belong to you.

शौर्ये तपसि दाने च यस्य न प्रथितं यशः ।
विद्यायामर्थलाभे वा मातुरुच्चार एव सः ॥

One must have attained fame in any of the below - courage, penance, charity, education or accumulation of wealth. If one is not able to do so, then his life is a waste - as if his mother gave birth to just a lump of flesh.

One must walk along a long path slowly. A fine cloth must be weaved very slowly. One must slowly climb the mountain. Education must happen slowly. Wealth is also accumulated slowly. These are the five things that have to be done very slowly.

When things happen as you like, you should not rejoice too much. You should not feel too sad when they go the other way also. When your wealth is destroyed, you should not lose your mind. One must not stray from the path of dharma ever.

Wealth that goes into the hands of a miser is of no use. It is like a tail of a dog – that can neither hide its private parts not can it keep away the flies.

गोशतादपि गोक्षीरं प्रस्थं धान्यशतादपि ।
प्रासादादपि खट्टार्धं शेषाः परविभूतयः ॥

Even if there are hundreds of cows, you need only very little milk. Even if you have hundreds of granaries, all you need a little food. Even if you have huge palace, all you need is half a bed to sleep in. Rest is to treated as if they belong to others.

कोऽर्थान् प्राप्य न गर्वितो विषयिणः कस्यापदोऽस्तं गताः

कः कालस्य न गोचरत्वमगमत् कोऽर्थी गतो गौरवं
    को वा दुर्जयदुर्गुणेषु पतितः क्षेमेण जातः पथि ॥

Who can keep arrogance out even after becoming wealthy? Who can claim that all their troubles are over? Whose mind has not been broken by a lady? Who does a king like? Who can cheat death for ever? Which beggar has ever gotten any respect? Who has come back to right path after having strayed to the path of sin?

समयोचितपद्यमालिका - विद्या अर्थ आर्जनं

क्षणशः कणश्चैव विद्यामर्थं च साधयेत् ।
क्षणत्यागे कुतो विद्या कणत्यागे कुतो धनम् ॥

kShaNashaH kaNashaH chaiva vidyAm artham cha sAdhayet ।
kShaNatyAge kuto vidyA kaNatyAge kuto dhanam ॥

Wisdom must be accumulated second by second spent in reading. Wealth must be accumulated grain by grain. If you don't pay attention and lose seconds, you can not get good wisdom. If you don't pay attention to grains, you cannot get wealthy.

Wealth has to be used to get more wealth just like tame elephants are used to capture and tame the wild elephants. In this world, people will never remember the person they received help from after having benefited from them.

अत्युच्चपदाध्यासः पतानायेत्यर्थशालिनां शंसत् ।
आपांडुपततिपत्रं तरोरिदं बंधनग्रंथेः ॥

ati uccha padAdhyAsaH patAnAyeti arthashAlinAm shamsat ।
ApAnDu patati patram taroH idam bandhana grantheH ॥

It is the same fate that awaits people reach the top using wealth. When a leaf turns white (pale), it loses the connection to the tree and falls off.

कुवलयानंद - लक्ष्मि

हालाहलो नैव विषं विषं रमा
    जनाः परं व्यत्ययमत्र मन्वते ।
निपीय जागर्ति सुखेन तं शिवः
    स्मृशन्निमां मुह्यति निद्रया हरिः ॥

hAlAhalo naiva viSham viSham ramA
    janAH param vyatyayam atra manvate ।
nipIya jAgarti sukhena tam shivaH
    smRushann imAm muhyati nidrayA hariH ॥

It is not halahala that is the poison, it is Lakshmi that is poison. People have understood it the other way around. Shiva is still able to live peacefully after having consumed halahala. But after touching Lakshmi, Hari was mesmerized into a sleep.

हालसप्तशती - अर्थ मित्र रूप ज्ञान

सोऽर्थो यो हस्ते तन्मित्रं यन्निरंतरं व्यसने ।
तद्रूपं यत्र गुणाः तद्विज्ञानं यत्र धर्मः ॥

sa artho yo haste tat mitram yat nirantaram vyasane ।
tat rUpam yatra guNAH tat vijnAnam yatra dharmaH ॥

It is called wealth only when it is in your hands (liquid). He is a friend who stands by you always when you are in trouble. Beauty is complete only when there are good qualities in the person. It is knowledge only when it makes you follow the moral code of life (Dharma).

विभूतिस्त्यागहीनेव सत्यहीनेव भारति ।
विद्या प्रशमहीनेव न भाति स्त्री पतिं विना ॥

Wealth is incomplete if one does not have a charitable mind. Speech is incomplete and useless if it is not truthful. Education is incomplete unless it helps you subdue your emotion. A lady without her husband is similarly incomplete.

हरिहरसुभाषित - विना शीलेन वनिता

विना शीलेन वनिता वाग्मिता विद्यया विना ।
विनियोगैर्विना वित्तं मास्तु कस्यापि जीवनः ॥

Let nobody ever have these in their lives - a lady without character, an orator without education (wisdom) and wealth that is not used properly.

बंधुः को नाम दुष्टानां कुप्येत्को नातियाचितः ।
को न तृप्यति वित्तेन कुकृते को न पंडितः ॥

Does a wicked man have any friends? Who will not get angry at a persistent beggar? Who can not be satiated by money? Who is not an expert at sin?
