सुकृतेन कुले जन्म सुकृतेन सुभाषितम् ।
सुकृतेन सती भार्या सुकृतेन कृती सुतः ॥

sukRutena kule janma sukRutena subhAShitam ।
sukRutena satI bhAryA sukRutena kRutI sutaH ॥

It is only by good fortune (as a result of good karma in previous lives) that one gets to be born in a good family, collect good subhashitas, get married to a lady of good character and get a son who will achieve something substantial.

हरिहर सुभाषित - सुभाषित

समाजेभ्यः सुमनसां सुभाषितमयं मधु ।
यावज्जीवं विचिन्वंति साधवो मधुपा इव ॥

- हरिहर सुभाषित

samAjebhyaH sumanasAm subhAShitamayam madhu ।
yAvajjIvaM vichinvanti sAdhavo madhupA iva ॥

- harihara subhAShita

A wise man must accumulate good sayings from other wise men as long as he lives. Subhashitas as sweet as honey. And we must be as tireless as bee to collect them.

हरिहरसुभाषित - विना शीलेन वनिता

विना शीलेन वनिता वाग्मिता विद्यया विना ।
विनियोगैर्विना वित्तं मास्तु कस्यापि जीवनः ॥

vinA shIlena vanitA vAgmitA vudyayA vinA।
viniyogairvinA vittam mAstu kasyApi jIvanaH ॥

Let nobody ever have these in their lives - a lady without character, an orator without education (wisdom) and wealth that is not used properly.

हरिहरसुभाषित - गण्यः

यद्युच्चैरपि न परानुपकुरुषे तन्मृषैव ते जन्म ।
यदि नैष जनितवर्षः को नाम पयोधरोत्कर्षः ॥

yadi ucchairapi na parAn upakuruShe tat mRuShaiva te janma ।
yadi naiSha janitavarShaH ko nAma payodharotkarShaH ॥

If you do not help people in spite of being highly placed, then your whole life is a grand waste. What is the use of cloud going so high in the sky if it does not rain?

हरिहर सुभाषित - धन रहितः

धनमेव धरणिवलये कलयति सफलायुषं पुरुषम् ।
यदि जीवति धनरहितः कथय मृतः कीदृशो भवति ॥

dhanameva dharaNi valaye kalayati saphala aayuSham puruSham ।
yadi jIvati dhana rahitaH kathaya mRutaH kIdRusho bhavati ॥

In some way, wealth is what makes ones life on this earth worthwhile. If you say a person without wealth also lives, then I beg to see how dead people are like. Aren't people without money as good as dead here?

हरिहर सुभाषित - परुष वाक्

इदमस्खलितं धारय वारय परुषाक्षरा वाचः ।
एकः सकलजनानां जगति रिपुः परुषवाक् पुरुषः ॥

idam askhalitam dhAraya vAraya paruSha akSharA vAchaH ।
ekaH sakalajanAnAM jagati ripuH paruShavAk puruShaH ॥

Don't let this slip your mind. One must never use harsh words. If one uses it, he will be hated by the entire world.

हरिहरसुभाषित - हरि भक्ति

अवधारय धर्मेषु प्रधनमवधानतः ।
निर्भरानंदाय गोविंदाय मनोऽर्पय ॥

avadhAraya dharmeShu pradhAnam avadhAnataH ।
nirbhara Ananda kandAya govindaaya mano arpaya ॥

Behold the most important of all the scriptures. Surrender your mind to Govinda who is the never ending source of happiness.

विद्याविनयोपेता हरति न चेतांसि कस्य मनुजस्य ।
मणिकाञ्चनसंयोगो जनयति लोकस्य लोचनानंदम् ॥

vidyA vinayopetA harati na chetAmsi kasya manujasya ।
maNi kAnchana samyogo janayati lokasya lochana anandam ॥

Who can restrain themselves from liking a well educated man who is also humble? A gem embedded in gold is very pleasing for the eyes world over.

कुरु गुरुवचो निपीतं
    भूयो भूयो विचिन्तयाधीतं ।
विद्या गुरूपदिष्टा चिर
    परिवृष्टा विभूषणं वपुषः ॥

Whatever teacher teaches a student must imbibe. What is understood must be contemplated again and again. A well thought out education is a decoration to the body.

कष्टं कर्मेति दुर्मेधाः कर्तव्याद्विनिवर्तते ।
न साहसमनारभ्य श्रेयः समुपलभ्यते ॥

Idiots give up on a task assuming it would be tough to complete it. They do not understand that fame/success can come only when you start tasks (and complete it).

उपदिशति लोकवृत्तं वितरति वित्तं विनोदयति चित्तं ।
उत्तंभयति महत्वं विद्या हृद्या सुराजसेवेव ॥
