सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - भार्या

सा भार्या या प्रियं ब्रूते स पुत्रो यत्र निर्वृत्तिः ।
तन्मित्रं यत्र विश्वासः सदेशो यत्र जीव्यते ॥

sA bhAryA yA priyam brUte sa putro yatra nir vRuttiH ।
tat mitram yatra vishvAsaH sa desho yatra jIvyate ॥

She is a wife who will keep the husband happy and does not speak harshly to him. A son is one who does not give troubles to his father. A friend is one who can be trusted. Your nation is one you live in (at present).

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - वरमेको गुणी पुत्रः

वरमेको गुणी पुत्रः न च मूर्खशतान्यपि ।
एकश्चन्द्रस्तमो हन्ति न च तारागणोऽपि च ॥

सुभाषितत्रिशती - सुपुत्रः

यः प्रीणयेत् सुचरितैः पितरं स पुत्रः
    यद् भर्तुरेव हितमिच्छति तत्कलत्रम् ।
तन्मित्रमापदि सखे च समक्रियं यत्
    एतत्त्रयं जगति पुण्यकृतो लभन्ते ॥

    yad bhartureva hitam ichChati tat kalatram ।
tat mitram aapadi sakhe cha samakriayam yat
    etat trayam jagati puNyakRuto labhante ॥

A good son is one who makes his father happy (by being obedient, follow dharma). A good wife is one who always keeps the interest of her husband in her mind. A good friend is one who does not change his mind when you are in trouble. Only people who have done good deeds in the past will get these in this world.

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - न माता शपते पुत्रं

न माता शपते पुत्रं न दोषं लभते मही ।
न हिंसां कुरुते साधुर्न देवः सृष्टिनाशकः ॥

na himsAm kurute sAdhuH na devaH sRuShTi nAshakaH ॥

A mother will never speak ill of her son. Nothing bad will ever stick to Earth. A virtuous person will never hurt any one. The Gods will never destroy this creation.

अपत्यदर्शनस्यार्थे प्राणानपि च या त्यजेत् ।
त्यजन्ति तामपि क्रूरा मातरं दारहेतवे ॥

Parents risk their own lives to bring an offspring to this world. But sons so brought to this world abandon them for the sake of their wives.

अर्थार्थी जीवलोकोऽयं श्मशानमपि सेवते ।
त्यक्त्वा जनयितारं स्वं निःस्वं गच्छति दूरतः ॥

There are a few greedy sons (or daughters) in this world who choose to live (and earn) in a graveyard for the sake of money even if it means to abandon their poor and old parents.

हरिहर सुभाषित - सुकृत

सुकृतेन कुले जन्म सुकृतेन सुभाषितम् ।
सुकृतेन सती भार्या सुकृतेन कृती सुतः ॥

It is only by good fortune (as a result of good karma in previous lives) that one gets to be born in a good family, collect good subhashitas, get married to a lady of good character and get a son who will achieve something substantial.

सत्यश्चाद्य प्रवादोऽयं लौकिकः प्रतिभाति मा ।

It is not seeming to be true what people say - Sons will inherit the qualities of the father and daughters that of the mother. (As told by Sumantra to Kaikeyi)

भागवत - सुतो अहितः

परोऽप्यपत्यं हितकृद् यथौषधं
    स्वदेहजोऽप्यामयवत् सुतोऽहितः ।
छिंद्यात् तदंगं यदुतात्मनोऽहितं
    शेषं सुखं जीवति यद्विसर्जनात् ॥

paro api apatyam hitakRud yathA auShadham
    svadehajaH api amayavat suto ahitaH ।
chindyAt tadangam yad uta Atmano ahitam
    sheSham sikham jIvati yad visarjanAt ॥

Even if he is someone else's son, if he helps you (in time) like a medicine then he is to be considered one's own. On the other hand, if your own son is causing troubles then you should cut ties with him. Just like cutting a problematic body part will relieve the rest of the body from pain - rest of the family will be relieved if you cut the ties with such a bad child.

सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय - दहन्ति विनाग्निम्

कुग्रामवासः कुजनस्य सेवा
    कुभोजनं क्रोधमुखी च भार्या ।
मूर्खश्च पुत्रो विधवा च कन्या
    दहन्ति चैतानि जनं विनाग्निम् ॥

kugraama vAsaH kujanasya sevA
    kubhojanam krodhamukhI cha bhAryA ।
mUrkhashcha putro vidhavA cha kanyA
    dahanti cha etAni janaM vinA agnim ॥

These things will burn a man alive without any fire - living in a bad village, serving a bad master, a bad meal, an angry wife, idiot son, widow daughter.

सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय - सुपुत्रः

एकेनापि सुपुत्रेण सिंही स्वपिति निर्भयम् ।
सहैव दशभिः पुत्रैर्भारं वहति गर्दभी ॥

ekena api suputreNa simhI svapiti nirbhayam ।
sahaiva dashabhiH putraiH bhAram vahati gardabhI ॥

A lioness has only one son - a good son. So, she can sleep fearlessly. A donkey on the other hand has ten children. But she has to still slog it out by lifting weights.

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - स्वर्गस्थोऽसौ महीतले

अस्ति पुत्रो वशी यस्य बृत्यो भार्या तथैव च ।
अभावे सति संतोषः स्वर्गस्थोऽसौ महीतले ॥

asti putro vashI yasya bhRuto bhAryA tathA eva cha ।
abhAve sati santoShaH svargastho asau mahItale ॥

If a man has a obedient son, willing wife, loyal servant and is happy even when poor - he is said to have found heaven on earth.

हितोपदेश - मित्रलाभ - सुविचार्य यत्कृतं

सुजीर्णमन्नं सुविचक्षणः सुतः
    सुशासिता स्त्री नृपतिः सुसेवितः ।
सुचिंत्य चोक्तं सुविचार्य यत्कृतं
    सुदीर्घकाले न हि याति विक्रियाम् ॥

sujIrNamannaM suvichakShanaH sutaH
     sushAsitA strI nRupatiH susevitaH ।
suchintya choktam suvichArya yatkRutam
    sudIrghakAle na hi yAti vikriyAm ॥

The following are of great value and their value does not erode over time: well digested food, well brought up son, well cultured woman, well served king, well thought speech, well deliberated action.

पराशर स्मृति - सुपुत्रः

सुक्षेत्रे वापयेद्बीजं सुपुत्रे दापयेद्धनम् |
सुक्षेत्रे च सुपुत्रे च यत्क्षिप्रं नैव नश्यति ||

A farmer must sow seeds in a fertile land. A father must entrust money to an able son. Seed or money when handed over to able recipients will always prosper

रघुवंश - सुपुत्रः

लोकान्तरसुखं पुण्यं तपोदानसमुद्भवम् |
सन्ततिः शुद्धवंश्या हि परत्रेह च शर्मणे ||

If you want to be happy in your afterlife, then you have to do a lot of penance and charity in this life. But it is a good son (or daughter) brought up in righteous upbringing that can give you happiness both in this world as well as the after life.

यादृशं फलमाप्नोति कुप्लवैः संतरन् जलम् |
तादृशं फलमाप्नोति कुपुत्रैः संतरंस्तमः ||

If you plan to navigate through darkness(miseries) of the world with the help of a bad son, then you will meet with the same fate as if you tried to cross the ocean using a bad boat (with holes).
