सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - भार्या

सा भार्या या प्रियं ब्रूते स पुत्रो यत्र निर्वृत्तिः ।
तन्मित्रं यत्र विश्वासः सदेशो यत्र जीव्यते ॥

sA bhAryA yA priyam brUte sa putro yatra nir vRuttiH ।
tat mitram yatra vishvAsaH sa desho yatra jIvyate ॥

She is a wife who will keep the husband happy and does not speak harshly to him. A son is one who does not give troubles to his father. A friend is one who can be trusted. Your nation is one you live in (at present).

सुभाषितत्रिशती - सुपुत्रः

यः प्रीणयेत् सुचरितैः पितरं स पुत्रः
    यद् भर्तुरेव हितमिच्छति तत्कलत्रम् ।
तन्मित्रमापदि सखे च समक्रियं यत्
    एतत्त्रयं जगति पुण्यकृतो लभन्ते ॥

    yad bhartureva hitam ichChati tat kalatram ।
tat mitram aapadi sakhe cha samakriayam yat
    etat trayam jagati puNyakRuto labhante ॥

A good son is one who makes his father happy (by being obedient, follow dharma). A good wife is one who always keeps the interest of her husband in her mind. A good friend is one who does not change his mind when you are in trouble. Only people who have done good deeds in the past will get these in this world.

पद्मपुराण - भार्या धर्म स्वातंत्र्य

न भार्यया समं मित्रं न च धर्मो दयासमः ।
न स्वातंत्र्यसमं सौख्यं गार्हस्थ्यान्नाश्रमो वरः ॥

na bhAryayaa samam mitram na cha dharmo dayA samaH ।
na svAtantrya samam saukhyam gArhasthyaat na aashramo varaH ॥

There is no better friend than a wife. No dharma better than compassion. Nothing better than being free. No state of life is better than running a household (being the man of the house).

दुष्टा भार्या शठं मित्रं भृत्यश्चोत्तरदायकः ।
ससर्पे च गृहे वासो मृत्युरेव न संशयः ॥

duShTA bhAryaa shaTham mitraM bhRutyaH cha uttaradAyakaH ।
sasarpe cha gRuhe vAsaH mRutyureva na saMshayaH ॥

Death is certain (soon) for a person whose wife is wicked, whose friends cheat and whose servants talk back to him. He is in same level of danger as sleeping in a house which has snakes in it.

    विद्याभ्यासे सदौषधे दाने ।

It is only by good fortune (as a result of good karma in previous lives) that one gets to be born in a good family, collect good subhashitas, get married to a lady of good character and get a son who will achieve something substantial.

A wife with good culture will treat her husband no less than God. I have analyzed in many ways. There is no one more intimate to a wife than her husband - not even God.

सुभिक्षं कृषके नित्यं नित्यं सुखमरोगिणि ।
भार्या भर्तुः प्रिया यस्य तस्य नित्योत्सवं गृहम् ॥

A farmer's house always has abundance. To be healthy is to be happy. If the husband and wife are loving, then there are festivities every day at home.

विश्वगुणादर्श - विदैवज्ञं ग्रामं

विदैवज्ञं ग्रामं विबुधविधुरां भूपतिसभां
    मुखं श्रुत्या जीनं मनुजपतिशून्यं च विषयम् ।
अनाचारन् दारानपहरिकथं काव्यमपि च
    प्रवक्तृत्वापेतं गुरुमपि सुबुद्धिः परिहरेत् ॥

vidaivajnam grAmam vibudha vidhurAM bhUpati sabhAm
    mukham shrutyA hInam manujapatishUnyam cha viShayam ।

A wise man will avoid these: a village without a person who understands God (to approach when troubled), a kings court that does not have wise advisors, face of someone who has not studied scriptures, a kingdom that does not have any king, a wife who does not follow Dharma and a poem that is not a story of God (in someway or other) and a teacher who does not teach well.

सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय - वाणी भार्या लक्ष्मी

वाणी रसवती यस्य भार्या प्रेमवती सती ।
लक्ष्मीर्दानवती यस्य सफलं तस्य जीवितम् ॥

vANI rasavatI yasya bhAryA premavatI satI।
lakShmIH dAnavatI yasya saphalam tasya jIvitam ॥

He is lucky whose speech is always uttered in good taste, whose loving wife is chastely and whose wealth is used for charity.

समयोचितपद्यमालिका - चिंता

मात्रा समं नास्ति शरीरपोषणं
    विद्यासमं नास्ति शरीर भूषणम् ।
भार्यासमं नास्ति शरीरतोषणं
    चिंतासमं नास्ति शरीरशोषणम् ॥

mAtrA samam nAsti sharIra poShaNam
    vidyA samam nAsti sharIra bhUShaNam।
bhAryA samam nAsti sharIra toShaNam
    chintA samam nAsti sharIra shoShaNam ॥

Nobody/nothing nourishes the body like mother. Nothing decorates the body better than education/knowledge. Nothing satiates the body like the wife. Nothing troubles the body more than worry.

रामायण - अयोध्या - पतिः

नातंत्री वाद्यते वीणा नाचक्रो वर्तते रथः ।
नापतिः सुखमेधेत या स्यादपि शतात्मजा ॥

na atantrI vAdyate na achakro vartate rathaH ।
na apatiH sukhamedheta yA syAdapi shata AtmajA ॥

A veena can not play melodiously without the strings. A chariot can not move without the wheels. A wife can not live happily without her man (after his death) even if she has hundred children.

न पिता नात्मजो नात्मा न माता न सखीजनः ।
इह प्रेत्य च नारीणां पतिरेको गतिः सदा ॥

iha pretya cha nArINAM patireko gatiH sadA ॥

Be it in this world or the afterlife, a lady can only depend on her man for anything - not father, not siblings, not herself, not mother and not her friends.

    कुभोजनं क्रोधमुखी च भार्या ।

    दहन्ति चैतानि जनं विनाग्निम् ॥

kugraama vAsaH kujanasya sevA
    kubhojanam krodhamukhI cha bhAryA ।
mUrkhashcha putro vidhavA cha kanyA
    dahanti cha etAni janaM vinA agnim ॥

These things will burn a man alive without any fire - living in a bad village, serving a bad master, a bad meal, an angry wife, idiot son, widow daughter.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्र संप्राप्ति - समित्रः

आदित्यस्योदयं तात तांबूलं भारतीकथा ।
इष्टा भार्या समित्रं च अपूर्वाणि दिनेदिने ॥

Adityasya udayam tAta tAMbUlaM bhAratIkathA ।
iShTA bhAryA samitraM ca apUrvANi dinedine ॥

Oh Father! the sunrise, beetle leaves, story from the Mahabharatha, loving wife and a good friend always have a freshness with them. They are always new.

अस्ति पुत्रो वशी यस्य बृत्यो भार्या तथैव च ।
अभावे सति संतोषः स्वर्गस्थोऽसौ महीतले ॥

abhAve sati santoShaH svargastho asau mahItale ॥

If a man has a obedient son, willing wife, loyal servant and is happy even when poor - he is said to have found heaven on earth.

हितोपदेश - सुहृद्भेद - आपत्काल

बंधुस्त्रीभृत्यवर्गस्य बुद्धेः सत्वस्य चात्मनः ।
आपन्निकषपाषाणे नरो जानाति सारताम् ॥

It is only during the times of trouble that peoples support to you is tested - like gold on touch stone. This applies to relative, wife, servants and one's own wisdom and courage.

मनुस्मृति - गृहिणि

सदा प्रहृष्टया भाव्यं गृहकार्येषु दक्षया ।
सुसंस्कृतोपस्करया व्यये चामुक्तहस्तया ॥

A good wife must always be happy. She must run the household efficiently. All the things (appliances, utensils, etc) in the house must be kept clean. She must exercise a tight grip on spending.

सतीमपि ज्ञातिकुलैकसंश्रयां
   जनोऽन्यथा भर्तृमतीं विशंकते ।
अतः समीपे परिणेतुरिष्यते
   प्रियाप्रिया वा प्रमदा स्वबंदुभिः ॥

Even a devoted wife is looked up by suspicion by other people (relatives) if she is not living with her husband (and living with her parents). So, a wife must live with her husband irrespective of whether he likes her or not.

अभिज्ञान शाकुन्तल - गृहिणि

शुश्रूषस्य गुरून् कुरु प्रियसखीवृत्तिं सपत्नीजने
भर्तुर्विप्रकृतापि रोषणतया मा स्म प्रतीपंगमः ।
भूयिष्ठं भव दक्षिणा परिजने भाग्येष्वनुत्सेकिनी
यांत्येवं गृहिणीपदं युवतयो वामाः कुलस्याधयः ॥

- अभिज्ञान शाकुन्तल

Take good care of the elders. Be friendly with the other wives (of the king). Do not succumb to (an show) anger if husband does something wrong. Treat the servants with dignity. Do not become headstrong when you have lot of wealth. If a young girl behaves thus, she can be called a good wife. If not, she will become a head ache to the entire family.
