सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - उदर


स्वच्छंदवनजातेन शाकेनापि प्रपूर्यते ।
अस्य दग्धोदरस्यार्थे कः कुर्यात्पातकं महत् ॥

Hunger can be satiated by tubes and fruits that grow freely in the forests. Then why does one commit horrible sins just to satiate this burnt stomach?

मस्तकन्यस्तभारादेर्दुःखमन्यैर्निवार्यते ।
क्षुधादिकृतदुःख तु विना स्वेन न केनचित् ॥

चतुर्वर्गसंग्रह - मोक्ष


तावद्धर्मकथा मनोभवरुचिर्मोक्षस्पृहा जायते
    यावत्तृप्तिसुखोदयेन न जनः क्षुत् क्षामकुक्षिः क्षणम् ।
प्राप्ते भोजनचिंतनस्य समये वित्तं निमित्तं विना
    धर्मे कस्य धियः स्मरं स्मरति कः केनेक्ष्यते मोक्षभूः ॥

tAvad dharmakathA mano bhava ruchiH mokSha spRuhA jAyate
    yAvat truptisukhodayena na janaH kShut kShAmakukShiH kShaNam ।
prApte bhojanachintanasya samaye vittam nimittam vinA
    dharme kasya dhiyaH smaraM smarati kaH kEna eekShyate mokShabhUH ॥

Kama(luxuries), stories about dharma and salvation make sense only when one the carnal necessities (hunger) are satisfied. Who can think about dharma when you are hungry and it is lunch (or dinner) time? Who can even think of other luxuries of life? Who can even think about salvation?

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - उदरार्थं सर्वं


यदसत्यं वदेन्मॄत्यः यद्वाऽसेव्यं च सेवते ।
यद्गच्छति विदेशं च तत्सर्वमुदरार्थतः ॥

A man may tell lies (cheat), eat the un-eatables (non-veg), leave his home country and go travel abroad. He will do all those only to satisfy the hunger in his stomach.
