पञ्चतंत्र - मूर्ख


सकृत् कंदुकपातेन पतत्यार्यः पतन्नपि ।
तथा पतति मूर्खास्तु मृत्पिण्डपतनं यथा ॥

One must enjoy the company of others, especially of people are like you and willing to help. If the rice is separate from the chaff, then it can not germinate. Even if the chaff is useless, rice will benefit from the association.

    गावश्चगोभिस्तुरगास्तुरंगैः ।
मूर्खाश्च मूर्खैः सुधियः सुधीभिः
    समानशीलव्यसनेषु सख्यम् ॥

mRugA mRugaiH sangama anuvrajanti
    gAvaH cha gobhiH turagAH turangaiH ।
mUrkhaH mUrkhaiH sudhibhiH sidhIbhiH
    samAna shIla vyasaneShu sakhyam ॥

Deer will have good time around deer, cows with other cows, horses with other horses, fools with other fools and the virtuous with other virtuous people. People of similar qualities will always go along well.

A wound gets hurt again and again before healing. You feel more hungry when he has no money. All your enemies rejoice (and perhaps unite) when you are in trouble. When your life is being torn apart, you commit more blunders.

If you find a person helping others, he is mostly a virtuous person. there is nothing special there. But if you see a person not helping (hurting) others and he still a virtuous person, then that person is special and is showing real virtue.

If one is associated with rogues, they get corrupted even if they were virtuous by themselves. In the matter of Duryodhana, even Bheeshma participated in stealing cows from Virata's kingdom.

One must not enter into a treaty with a rogue - who does not believe in truth and dharma. You may think you have designed the treaty very well, but him being a rogue will rescind it very soon and become an enemy again.

A lion that is used to eating meat after hunting deer and other creatures will not eat grass even when it is hungry. Just like that, even when troubled by miseries, a person of noble birth (and intentions) will never stray from the path of morality.

One must talk only when there will be some good use out of it. He must speak only when his words will stick and some action will follow. Just like color sticks better only on white cloth.

When a King likes the work of a servant, he just parts with money in the form of rewards. But, the servants on the other hand will be willing to lay down their lives in return of just the honor of being of service to the King. Isn't it an irony?

If one leaves the 'permanent' and runs behind the 'temporary' - he will end up losing both. The permanent is lost and the temporary would never have lasted anyway.

यस्यास्ति सर्वत्र गतिः स कस्मात्
    स्वदेशरागेण हि याति नाशम् ।
तातस्य कूपोऽयमिति ब्रुवाणाः
    क्षारं जलं कापुरुषाः पिबंति ॥

yasya asti sarvatra gatiH sa kasmAt
    svadesharAgeNa hi yAti nAsham ।
tAtasya kUpaH ayam iti bruvANAH
    kShAram jalam kApuruShAH pibanti ॥

If a person has talents that are valued at all places then why would he stick to his own country out attachment? It would certain failure. Only those who do not have talent will drink hard water from the well jest because their father dug it for them.
