पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - सज्जनाः


स्तिमितोन्नतसंचारा जनसंतापहारिणः ।
जायन्ते विरला लोके जलदा इव सज्जनाः ॥

Virtuous people are like clouds. They live very high up (morally), help others and very rare. A cloud floats in the the sky and showers water on earth for the needy.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - सेवक


स्थानेष्टेव नियोक्तव्या भृत्याश्चाभरणानि च ।
न हि चूडामणिः पादे प्रभावामीति बध्यते ॥

Servants and ornaments have to be placed at their appropriate positions. Will any one wear a precious gem (choodamani) on the foot.

राजा तुष्टो हि भृत्यानामर्थमात्रं प्रयच्छति ।
ते तु संमानमात्रेण प्राणैरप्युपकुर्वते ॥

When a King likes the work of a servant, he just parts with money in the form of rewards. But, the servants on the other hand will be willing to lay down their lives in return of just the honor of being of service to the King. Isn't it an irony?

यस्यास्ति सर्वत्र गतिः स कस्मात्
    स्वदेशरागेण हि याति नाशम् ।
तातस्य कूपोऽयमिति ब्रुवाणाः
    क्षारं जलं कापुरुषाः पिबंति ॥

yasya asti sarvatra gatiH sa kasmAt
    svadesharAgeNa hi yAti nAsham ।
tAtasya kUpaH ayam iti bruvANAH
    kShAram jalam kApuruShAH pibanti ॥

If a person has talents that are valued at all places then why would he stick to his own country out attachment? It would certain failure. Only those who do not have talent will drink hard water from the well jest because their father dug it for them.

यस्य न विपदि विषादः संपदि हर्षो रणे न भीरुत्वम् ।

It is very rare that a mother gives birth to a son who is not sad when faced with trouble, not overly joyous when prosperous and not a coward in battlefield.

Oh boy! why are you afraid of death? Death does not spare those who are afraid. It may happen right now or after a hundred years. But it is certain.

पुत्रीति जाता महतीह चिंता
    कस्मै प्रदेयेति महान्वितर्कः ।
दत्वा सुखं प्राप्स्यति वा न वेति
    कन्यापितृत्वं खलु नाम कष्टम् ॥

putri iti jAtA mahati iha chintA
    kasyai pradeya iti mahAn vitarkaH ।
datva sukham prApsyati vA na vA iti
    kanyA pitRutvam khalu nAma kaShTam ॥

If a daughter is born it is a cause of great worry. First you have to worry about whom she should be married to. Its a great debate. After getting married, you get worried if she is happy or not. It is really difficult being a father of a daughter.

निमित्तमुद्दिश्य हि यः प्रकुप्यति
    ध्रुवं स तस्यापगमे प्रशाम्यति ।
अकारणद्वेषपरोहि यो भवेत्
    कथं नरस्तं परितोषयिष्यति ॥

nimittam uddeshya hi yaH prakupyati
    dhruvam sa tasya Apagame prashAmyati ।
akAraNa dveSha parohi yo bhavet
    kathaM narastam paritoShayiShyati ॥

When one's anger has a specific source (reason), then the anger subsides naturally when the reason no longer exists. But if one is indulged in meaningless hatred then how can we find ways to placate him?

The King can not lead a king's life without the servants. The servants owe their livelyhood to the king. Their relationship is therefore mutually dependent - equally.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - राजा प्रजा


नरपतिहितकर्ता द्वेष्यतां याति लोके
    जनपदहितकर्ता त्यज्यते पार्थिवेंद्रैः ।
इति महति विरोधे वर्तमाने समाने
    नृपति जनपदानां दुर्लभः कार्यकर्ता ॥

narapati hitakartaa dveShyatAm yAti loke
    janapadahitakartA tyajyate pArthivendraiH ।
iti mahati virodhe vartamAne samAne
    nRupati janapadAnAm durlabhaH kAryakartA ॥

If one helps the king, people at large will not like him. If one works mostly in people's interest, then the kings will abandon him. With both sides equally important, it is very difficult to find a person who can balance the interests of both the king and the subjects.

A wise man who is interested in protecting his wealth will not believe a person unless he knows something about the person - education, family or past valour.

सदा मत्ताश्च मातंगाः प्रसन्ने सति भूपतौ ॥

sadA mattAshcha mAtangaaH prasanne sati bhUpatau ॥

If the King is kept happy you can enjoy everything. There will be white umbrellas, horses, damsels and raging elephants. It is in our best interests to keep him happy.

    द्गोप्यं वयस्येषु सुतेषु किंचित् ।
युक्तं न वा युक्तमिदं विचिंत्य
    वदेद्विपश्चिन्महतोऽनुरोधात् ॥

dAreShu kinchit svajaneShu kinchit
    gopyam vayasyeShu suteShu kinchit ।
yuktaM na vA yuktam idam vicintya
    vaded vipashchin mahato anurodhAt ॥

One must hide a little secrets from wife, relatives, friends or children. Not everyone need to be told everything. A wise man must think 'to tell or not to tell' a lot according to the task at hand.

कुलं च शीलं च सनाथतां च
     विद्यां च वित्तं च वपुर्वयश्च ।
एतान्गुणान्सप्त विचिन्त्य देया
    कन्या बुधैः शेषमचिंतनीयम् ॥

kulam cha shIlam cha sanAthatAm cha
    vidyAm cha vittaM cha vapuH vayashcha ।
etAn guNAn sapta vichintya deyA
    kanya budhaiH sheSham achintanIyam ॥

Only the following seven attributes of a groom are important - family, character, ownership of property, education, wealth, physique and age. Rest all are immaterial. A wise man will only look at these qualities in a groom before marrying his daughter to him.

काकमांसं शुनोच्छिष्टं स्वल्पं तदपि दुर्लभम् ।
भक्षितेनापि किं तेन तृप्तिर्येन न जायते ॥

kAkamAmsam shunocChiShTam svalpam tadapi durlabham ।
bhakShitenApi kiM tena tRuptiH yena na jAyate ॥

It is meat from a crow. Left over after a dog has feasted on it. It is very little. Even that is not easy to get. If I eat that, it will not even satisfy the slightest hunger. Why should I even eat it if it is not able to quench any hunger? At a higher level of consciouses, all worldly pleasures seem too insignificant as this.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - नृपतिः


आसन्नमेव नृपतिर्भजते मनुष्यं
    वुद्याविहीनमकुलीनमसंस्कृतं वा ।
प्रायेण भूमिपतयः प्रमदा लताश्च
    यत्पार्श्वतो भवति तत्परिवेष्टयन्ति ॥

Asannameva nRupatirbhajate manuShyaM
    vidyAvihInamakulInamasaMskRutaM vA ।
prAyeNa bhUmipatayaH pramAdA latAshcha
    yat pArshvato bhavati tat pariveShTayanti ॥

A king will confide with a person who is always close to him even if he is not well educated, not of noble family and neither has good conduct. Be it a weak king, women or a creeper - they all seek support in whatever is physically close to them.

In winter sitting beside the fire is like having elixir. When you see someone you like, it has the same feeling. Same is the feeling when you are decorated by the king. Very similar is the feeling when you eat rice baked in milk. One must consider all these very important in his life.

अप्रकटीकृतशक्तिः शक्तोपि जनतिरस्क्रियां लभते ।
निवसन्नंतर्दारुणि लंघ्यो वह्निर्न तु ज्वलितः ॥

aprakaTikRuta shaktiH shaktopi janastiraskriyAM labhate ।
nivasannaMtardAruNi langhyo vahnirna tu jvalitaH ॥

One may be strong. If he does not show is strength every now and then, he will be subject to public neglect. One may walk across fire when it hidden inside the wood. But the same can not be done when it is in the form of flames.
