स्वकर्मधर्मार्जितजीवितानां
    शास्त्रेषु दारेषु सदा रतानाम् ।
जितेंद्रियाणामतिथिप्रियाणां
    गृहेऽपि मोक्षः पुरुषोत्तमानाम् ॥

समयोचितपद्यरत्नमालिका - धर्म


यथा खरश्चंदनभारवाही
    भारस्य वेत्ता न तु चंदनस्य ।
तथैव लोका बहुशास्त्रयुक्ताः
    धर्मेण हीनाः पशुभिः समानाः ॥

If a donkey is carrying a sack of sandalwood, it knows about the weight only - not about the greatness of sandalwood. Similarly, there are many people in this world who have studied many scriptures and never got a hang of its real meaning. If a person does not follow dharma even after so much study, is is as good as the donkey.

बलवानप्यशक्तोऽसौ धनवानपि निर्धनः ।
श्रुतवानपि मूर्खश्च यो धर्मविमुखो जनः ॥

There are four doors through which adharma can enter us – private parts, stomach, hands and speech. If one guards these doors carefully at all the time, he will be known as Dharmajna and avoid all sins. All sins are related to man losing control of these doors.

नेह यत्कर्म धर्माय न विरागाय कल्पते ।
न तीर्थपदसेवायै जीवन्नपि मृतो हि सः ॥

Our actions must be to uphold Dharma, or to lead us to detachment (asceticism), or to serve noble wise men (who are worthy of service). If they do not meet any of the above, then we are as good as dead.

It is natural that man commits sins by his action - of body, speech and intellect. But there are a few people who are courageous, know Dharma and have faith who can live their life so well that they destroy all those sins - as easily as fire destroys a cluster of bamboo shoots.

चतुर्वर्गसंग्रह - मोक्ष


तावद्धर्मकथा मनोभवरुचिर्मोक्षस्पृहा जायते
    यावत्तृप्तिसुखोदयेन न जनः क्षुत् क्षामकुक्षिः क्षणम् ।
प्राप्ते भोजनचिंतनस्य समये वित्तं निमित्तं विना
    धर्मे कस्य धियः स्मरं स्मरति कः केनेक्ष्यते मोक्षभूः ॥

tAvad dharmakathA mano bhava ruchiH mokSha spRuhA jAyate
    yAvat truptisukhodayena na janaH kShut kShAmakukShiH kShaNam ।

Kama(luxuries), stories about dharma and salvation make sense only when one the carnal necessities (hunger) are satisfied. Who can think about dharma when you are hungry and it is lunch (or dinner) time? Who can even think of other luxuries of life? Who can even think about salvation?

चत्वारो धनदायादाः धर्माग्निनृपतस्कराः ।
तेषां ज्येष्ठावमानेन त्रयः कुप्यंति सोदराः ॥

Dharma, fire, king and thieves are brothers. They are the cousins of wealth. If the eldest of the brothers is humiliated (by wealth) then the other three will destroy wealth to take revenge. Ergo: wealth must be spent by never viloating Dharma, the moral code of life.

यत्र निर्मलभावेन सम्सारे वर्तते गृही ।
धर्मं चरति निष्कामं तत्रैव रमते हरिः ॥



yatra nirmalabhAvena samsAre vartate gRuhI।
dharmam carati niShkAmam tatraiva ramate hariH ॥


Sri Hari will reside there where family men will lead their life according to Dharma with pure thoughts and without any attachemnts and greed.

भागवत माहात्म्य - धर्मं भजस्व सततं


धर्मं भजस्व सततं त्यज लोकधर्मान्
    सेवस्व साधुपुरुषान् जहि कामतृष्णाम् ।
अन्यस्य दोषगुणचिन्तनमाशु मुक्त्वा
    सेवाकथरसमहो नितरां पिब त्वम् ॥

Always follow Dharma in its purest form. Do not follow what is defacto which changes from time to time and from place to place. Serve noble men (mendicants). Give up greed to get more and lust. Stop finding faults in others. Spend your time in serving others and listening to tales about God.

This nameless body is destined to be destroyed by illness - of body or mind. It's only a matter of today or tomorrow. Why should one do any thing against dharma (moral code of life) for the sake of this body?
