सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - हितोपदेश

हितोपदेशं शृणुयात् कुर्वीत च यथोदितम् ।
विदुरोक्तमकृत्वाभूत्कौरवः शोकशल्यभाक् ॥

hitopadesham shRuNuyAt kurvIta cha yathA uditam ।
viduroktam akRutvA bhUt kauravaH shoka shalya bhAk ॥

You must listen to people when they are advising for your own well being - and do as they say. Kaurava listened to Vidura, but did not do as he said. As a result he met with lot of grief.

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - सुहृच्च विद्वानपि

मनीषिणः संति न ते हितैषिणो
    हितैषिणः संति न ते मनीषिणः ।
सुहृच्च विद्वानपि दुर्लभो नृणां
    यथौषधं स्वादु हितं च दुर्लभम् ॥

manIShiNaH na te hitainShiNaH
    hitaiShiNaH santi na te manIShiNaH ।
suhRut cha vidvAnapi durlabho nRuNAm
    yathA auShadham svAdu hitam cha durlabham ॥

There are wise men. But they are not my well wishers. There are a lot of well wishers. But they are not wise. It is difficult in this world to find a person who is both wise and a well wisher - just like it is hard to find a medicine that also tastes good.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - हितैषि

माता मित्रं पिता चेति स्वभावात् त्रितयं हितम् |
कार्यकारणतश्चान्ये भवन्ति हितबुद्धयः ||

Mother, friend and father - these are the only three people who will help you by nature. All other become well-wishers only to serve their own purpose.
