यशस्तिलक - शास्त्र शौर्य

यथास्त्ररहिते पुंसि वृथा शौर्यपरिग्रहः ।
तथोपन्यासहीनस्य वृथा शास्त्रपरिग्रहः ॥

yathA astra rahite pumsi vRuthA shaurya parigrahaH ।
tathA upanyAsa hInasya vRuthA shAstra parigrahaH ॥

A soldier may be very brave and courageous. His courage is useless if he does not have any weapons. Just like that, having lot of knowledge is useless if you can not articulate it well so that other people can understand.

निःसारस्य पदार्थस्य प्रायेणाडंबरो महान् ।
न हि स्वर्णे ध्वनिस्तादृक्कांस्ये यादृक् प्रजायते ॥

niH sArasya padArthasya prAyeNa ADambaro mahAn ।
na hi svarNe dhvaniH tAdRuk kAnsye yAdRuk prajAyate ॥

Usually an item that does not have good qualities will make up for it by having a lot of decorations. Bronze makes lot of sound while gold does not.

यशस्तिलक - ज्ञान क्रिया

हतं ज्ञानं क्रियाशून्यं हता चाज्ञानिनः क्रिया ।
धावन्नप्यन्धको नष्टः पश्यन्नपि च पङ्गुकः ॥

hataM jnAnaM kriyAshUnyaM hatA ca ajnAninaH kriyA ।
dhavannapi andhako naShTaH pashyannapi ca pangukaH ॥

Knowledge is lost when not acted up on. Action without knowledge is meaningless. Even if a blind man can run fast, it will only lead to his loss. Even if a cripple can see, it is of no use.

यशस्तिलक - श्रेयमार्ग

प्राणाघातान्निवृत्तिः परधनहरणे संयमः सत्यवाक्यम्
काले शक्त्या प्रदेयं युवतिजनकथामूकभावः परेषाम् ।
तृष्णास्रोतोविबंधो गुरुषु च विनतिः सर्वभूतानुकंपा
सामान्यं सर्वशास्त्रेष्वनुपहतविधिः श्रेयसामेषमार्गः ॥

- यशस्तिलक

The following are generally accepted in all scriptures as the way to lead a successful life: stay away from hurting animals, do not steal from others, be honest, keep donating now-and-then, keep mum when people talk about a young girl (do not defame her by heresay), keep a check on your desires, be humble with your teachers, compassion towards all beings.

यशस्तिलक - कर्णेजपैस्तु भोग्यानि

समरभरः सुभटानां फलानि कर्णेजपैस्तु भोग्यानि |
करिदशना इव नृपतेर्बाह्याः क्लेशाय खादनेंऽतस्थाः ||

The brave soldiers win the war outside the country. But the benefits are enjoyed by rumormongers and ear biters with in the state. Just like all the hard work is done by the tusks of the elephant and the internal molars enjoy biting the food.

यशस्तिलक - धूर्त मंत्रि

चारो यस्य विचारश्च राज्ञो नास्तीक्षणद्वयम् |
तस्यांधदुग्धवद्राज्यं मंत्रिमार्जालगोचरम् ||

- यशस्तिलक

A king who does not have an elaborate spy network and a sane logical mind (for analysis) will lose his kingdom to the minister. This is the same fate that happens to milk kept in front of a blind man. The cat will silently drink it all.

यशस्तिलक - मंत्रविप्लव

एकं विषरसो हन्ति शस्त्रेणैकश्च हन्यते |
सबंधुराष्ट्रं राजानं हन्त्येको मंत्रविप्लवः ||

Poison kills only one person (the one who drinks it). Weapons can kill only one (or few). But a rogue thought in a king's mind can kill the king along with all his relatives, subjects and his kingdom.
