भारतमञ्जरी - सत्यम्


न सत्यं केवलं सत्यमनृतं न तथानृतम् ।
हितं यत् सर्वलोकस्य तत्सत्यं शेषमन्यथा ॥

na satyam kevalaM satyam anRutaM na tathA anRutam ।
hitam yat sarvalokasya tat satyam sheSham anyathA ॥

Just the facts will not make the complete truth. Anything that is not true is not false by default. There are always shades of grey. One thing is clear – what is good for the entire world is the truth, rest everything is not-truth.

न दानतुल्यं धनमन्यदस्ति
    न सत्यतुल्यं व्रतमन्यदस्ति ।
न शीलतुल्यं शुभमन्यदस्ति
    न क्षांतितुल्यं हितमन्यदस्ति ॥

अभिज्ञानशाकुन्तला - सत्य प्रमाण


आजन्मनः शाठ्यमशिक्षितो यः
    तस्याप्रमाणं वचनं जनस्य ।
परातिसंधानमधीयते यैः
    विद्येति ते सन्तु किलाप्तवाचः ॥

    tasya apramANam vachanaM janasya ।

    vidyeti te santu kila AptavAchaH ॥

What has become of this world? People do not believe the words of sages who live in hermitage and have never been exposed (or taught) deceit. On the other hand, they believe words of those who have learnt the art of deception as part of their formal education (the kings).

यशस्तिलक - श्रेयमार्ग


प्राणाघातान्निवृत्तिः परधनहरणे संयमः सत्यवाक्यम्
काले शक्त्या प्रदेयं युवतिजनकथामूकभावः परेषाम् ।
तृष्णास्रोतोविबंधो गुरुषु च विनतिः सर्वभूतानुकंपा
सामान्यं सर्वशास्त्रेष्वनुपहतविधिः श्रेयसामेषमार्गः ॥

प्राज्ञोऽपि जल्पतां पुंसां श्रुत्वा वाचः शुभाशुभाः ।

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - सत्य


न तथ्यवचनं सत्यं नातथ्यवचनं मृषा ।
यद्भूतहितमत्यन्तं तत्सत्यमितरन्मृषा ॥

Just stating a fact as is not the same as telling truth. Not choosing to tell a fact is not the same as telling a lie. That which brings real (permanent) happiness to beings is truth. What does not is false.

Money must be used for charity. Speech must be used for truth. Life must be used to uphold Dharma and earn fame. Body must be used for helping others. Worthless things must always be used to create some thing worthwhile.
