jAmAtRu sampattim achintayitvA
    pitrA tu dattA svamanobhilAShAt ।
kuladvayam hanti madena nArI
     kUladvayam kShubdhajalA nadIva ॥

- avimAraka

If the father does not weigh the qualities of the groom well and give her daughter away, then the bride will act arrogantly with her in-laws. This will ruin both the families. Just like a flooding rampant river will destroys both the banks.

kulam cha shIlam cha sanAthatAm cha
vidyAm cha vittaM cha vapuH vayashcha ।
etAn guNAn sapta vichintya deyA
    kanya budhaiH sheSham achintanIyam ॥

- panchatantra, mitrabheda

Only the following seven attributes of a groom are important - family, character, ownership of property, education, wealth, physique and age. Rest all are immaterial. A wise man will only look at these qualities in a groom before marrying his daughter to him.

One must not give his daughter in marriage to a person who live in far off land, or very near you, or very strong (cause he could become oppressive soon), or very weak, or does not want to work or is an idiot.

A wise man will not give his daughter in marriage to these people - some living very far away, an uneducated person, a man who is only interested in seeking salvation, a madly courageous person or a poor person. While they may not have any glaring shortcomings the chances of long lasting happy married life is less with each of the above grooms.

The following are the eight characteristics one must look for in a bridegroom - he must belong to a virtuous family, well educated, young (youthful), strength, healthy, liked by many (not hated by majority), willingness to start a family and wealth (at least a drive to earn money)
