पराशर स्मृति - कलि युग


धर्मो जितो ह्यधर्मेण जितः सत्योऽनृतेन च ।
जिता भृत्यैस्तु राजानः स्त्रीभिश्च पुरुषा जिताः ॥

dharmo jito hi adharmeNa jitaH satyaH anRutena cha।
jitA bhRutyaiH tu rAjAnaH strIbhiH cha puruShA jitAH ॥

In the epoch of kali (the present age), Dharma will be overcome by immorality, Truth will be overshadowed by lies, servants will overthrow the kings and women will be in control of the men.

पराशर स्मृति - धर्माचरण


आपत्काले तु संप्राप्ते शौचाचारं न चिंतयेत् ।
स्वयं समुद्धरेत् पश्चात् स्वस्थो धर्मं समाचरेत् ॥

ApatkAle tu samprApte shauchAchAram na chintayet ।
svayam samuddharet pashchAt svastho dharmam samAcharet ॥

When you are faced with a calamity, one must not be adamant on following the cleanliness procedures. One must save himself first and only then the Dharma must be followed.

बृहत् पराशर स्मृति - सुचिः


अत्यंतमलिनः कायः नवच्छिद्रसमन्वितः ।
स्रवत्येष दिवारात्रं प्रातःस्नानेन शुद्ध्यति ॥

atyanmta malinaH kAyaH nava cChidra samanvitaH ।
sravati eSha divA rAtram prAtaH snAnena shuddhyati ॥

This body, which has nine holes is very dirty. Dirt gets into the body through the nine holes all during the day or night. Hence every morning one must wash himself.

पराशरस्मृति - रक्षेदेव स्वदेहं


देशभङ्गे प्रवासे वा व्याधिषु व्यसनेष्वपि ।
रक्षेदेव स्वदेहादि पश्चाद्धर्मं समाचरेत् ॥

When the country is being plundered (by enemies), when on travel, when ill, when in trouble - one must strive to protect his own body. Only later must he worry about following Dharma (the moral code of life).

बृहत् पराशर स्मृति - कृषि


सुखं न कृषितोऽन्यत्र यदि धर्मेण वर्तते |
अवस्त्रत्वं निरन्नत्वं कृषितो नैव जायते ||

A farmer will always be happy as long as he leads his life following Dharma (moral code of life). He should respect the land and not try to exploit. If he lives like that, he will never go hungry or without clothes.

सुक्षेत्रे वापयेद्बीजं सुपुत्रे दापयेद्धनम् |
सुक्षेत्रे च सुपुत्रे च यत्क्षिप्रं नैव नश्यति ||

A farmer must sow seeds in a fertile land. A father must entrust money to an able son. Seed or money when handed over to able recipients will always prosper

निर्धनत्वमसत्यत्वं विद्यायुक्तस्य कर्हिचित् |
अस्थानित्वमभाग्यत्वं न सुशीलस्य कर्हिचित् ||

You may find an educated person being poor or corrupt. But you will never see a man with great character suffering from either poverty or misfortune. This shows that education alone can not make a man rich or upright. It is one's character that determines his fortunes.

बृहत् पराशर स्मृति - वर


नातिदूरे न चासन्ने अत्याढ्ये चातिदुर्बले ।
वृत्तिहीने च मूर्खे च षट्सु कन्या न दीयते ॥

One must not give his daughter in marriage to a person who live in far off land, or very near you, or very strong (cause he could become oppressive soon), or very weak, or does not want to work or is an idiot.

बृहत् पराशर स्मृति - कलौ तपस्विनः


धर्मश्च लोकदंभार्थं पाषाण्डार्थं तपस्विनः ।
विविधा वाग्वंचनार्थं कलौ सत्यानुसारिणी ॥

In the time of kali (present age) the Rishis will claim to follow dharma only to show off. Their words will be very convinsing like truth. But they are only meant to cheat you. All these are so unrighteous in nature.

बृहत् पराशर स्मृति - कन्यादान


दूरस्थानामविद्यानां मोक्षधर्मानुयायिनाम् ।
शूराणां निर्धनानां च न देय कन्यका बुधैः ॥

A wise man will not give his daughter in marriage to these people - some living very far away, an uneducated person, a man who is only interested in seeking salvation, a madly courageous person or a poor person. While they may not have any glaring shortcomings the chances of long lasting happy married life is less with each of the above grooms.

पराशर स्मृति - दान

तपः परं कृतयुगे त्रेतायां ज्ञानमुच्यते ।
द्वापरे यज्ञमित्यूचुः दानमेकं कलौ युगे ॥

Religious austerity is the way to attain salvation in Kruta yuga. Knowledge is the key in Treta yuga. Rituals is the convenient way in Dwapara yuga. In Kali yuga (present), charity is the only way to attain inner peace.

ज्यौतिषं व्यवहारं च प्रायश्चित्तं चिकित्सितं ।
अजानन् यो नरो ब्रूयात् साहसं किमतः परम् ॥

There is no felony greater than pretending to know astrology, be a judge, suggesting ways of redemption and practicing medicine without having enough knowledge in the matter.

जातिवुद्यावयःशक्तिरारोग्यं बहुपक्षता ।
अर्थित्वं वित्तसंपत्तिरष्टावेते वरे गुणाः ॥

The following are the eight characteristics one must look for in a bridegroom - he must belong to a virtuous family, well educated, young (youthful), strength, healthy, liked by many (not hated by majority), willingness to start a family and wealth (at least a drive to earn money)
