महाभारत - वन - धर्म


प्रिये नातिभृशं हृष्येत् अप्रिये न च संज्वरेत् ।
न मुह्येदर्थच्छिद्रेषु न च धर्मं परित्यजेत् ॥

na muhyed artha cChidreShu na cha dharmaM parityajet ॥

When things happen as you like, you should not rejoice too much. You should not feel too sad when they go the other way also. When your wealth is destroyed, you should not lose your mind. One must not stray from the path of dharma ever.

सर्वे व्यसनिनो मूर्खाः यः क्रियवान् स पण्डितः ॥

न हि पापानि कर्माणि शुद्ध्यंत्यनशनादिभिः ।
सीदत्यनशनादेव मांसशोणितलेपनः ॥

One's sins will not be washed away by rituals like fasting. Only thing that is achieved by fasting is wearing of the body made of flesh and blood.

मनः शीघ्रतरं वाताच्चिंता बहुतरी तृणात् ॥

Mother's weight (importance) is more than that of the earth. Father's place should be held higher than the sky. Mind moves faster than wind. Worries outnumber the blades of grass.

महाभारत - वन - धर्मसूक्ष्मता


यद्भूतहितमत्यन्तं तत्सत्यमिति धारणा ।
विपर्ययकृतोधर्मः पश्य धर्मस्य सूक्ष्मताम् ॥

That action (in its purest sense) which helps the animals has to treated as truth (in accordance with Dharma). Anything that hurts them is therefore against dharma. See how simple and subtle is the essence of Dharma. This was told by a hunter to a brahmin while explaining how he perceived Dharma to be.

One must not engage in dry arguments. One must always do good to others without any expectation. Sensory pleasures, haste and hatred must not make one leave the path of Dharma.
