विवेकचूडामणि - मनुष्यत्वं


दुर्लभं त्रयमेवैतद्दैवानुग्रहहेतुकम् ।
मनुष्यत्वं मुमुक्षुत्वं महापुरुषसंश्रयः ॥

अप्पय्यदीक्षितसय वैराग्य शतक - परलोक


दाराः पुत्रेषु रताः पुत्राः पितृधनपरिग्रहव्यग्राः ।
रोदनशरणा जननी परलोकगतस्य को बंधुः ॥

dArAH putreShu ratAH putrAH pitRu dhana parigrahavyagrAH ।
rodanasharaNA jananI paraloka gatasya ko bandhuH ॥

The wives are worried about the sons. The sons are thinking about their inheritance. The mother is resigned to grief. Who is there to help the man who has gone to the after worlds?

Death cooks a man's body like this - pierce it by the needle of greed, fry it in the ghee of sensory pleasures and heat it in the fire of attachment and hatred. At the end man is finished with his life.

सर्वभूतात्मनां ब्रह्मन् स शान्तिमधिगच्छति ॥

श्री शंकरः - इन्द्रिय


तज्ज्ञानं प्रशमकरं यदिंद्रियाणां
    तज्ज्ञेयं यदुपनिषत्सु निश्चितार्थम् ।
ते धन्या भुवि परमार्थनिश्चितेहाः
    शेषास्तु भ्रमनिलये परिभमन्तः ॥

tat jnAnaM prashamakaraM yad indriyANAm
    tat jneyaM yad upaniShatsu niShcitArtham ।
te dhanyA bhuvI paramArtha nishcitehAH
    sheShAstu bhramanilaye paribhramantaH ॥

That is knowledge that can arrest the speed at which our senses drive our mind. The subject of our studies should be to know more about the cosmic spirit mentioned in the Upanishats. There are some lucky people in this world who know all about the spirit. The rest of them are wandering in the illusion of knowing it.

अप्पय्यदीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक - ममकार


त्यक्तव्यो ममकारस्त्यक्तुं यदि शक्यते नासौ ।
कर्तव्यो ममकारः किं तु स सर्वत्र कर्तव्यः ॥


- अप्पय्यदीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक


tyaktavyo mamakAraH atyaktum yadi shakyate na asau ।
kartavyo mamakAraH kim tu sa sarvatra kartavyaH ॥

One must denounce all kinds of attachment. It is not possible he must develop attachment towards all objects alike.
