- गरुडपुराण

paraveshmani vAsaH cha shakrasya api shriyam haret ॥

- garuDa purANa

These things have the potential to erode the wealth of Indra (King of Gods) also - eating someone else's food, being controlled by someone else, sleeping on others bed, indulgence in other's wives, living in other people's house. One must avoid all of them.

- garuDapurANa

Death is certain (soon) for a person whose wife is wicked, whose friends cheat and whose servants talk back to him. He is in same level of danger as sleeping in a house which has snakes in it.

गरुडपुराण - मुक्तिः

देहदण्डनमात्रेण का मुक्तिरविवेकिनां ।

- गरुडपुराण

dehadaNDana mAtreNa kA muktiH avivekinAm ।
valmIka tADanAt eva mRutaH kutra mahoragaH ॥

- garuDa purAna

How can one get salvation only by hurting his body? One must be a fool to believe so. Will beating the ant hill kill the big snake? Body is the anthill. The attributes of the soul interested in the worldly pleasure is the snake. Until those attributes are squashed, the soul can not be liberated.

- garuDa puRANa

The truth is hidden within oneself. Fools don't see it and search for it in the scriptures. Just like the story of a shepherd who has the sheep in his arms and looks for it in the well.

palAlamiva dhAnyArthI sarvashAstrANi samtyajet ॥

- garuDa purANa

One must study all the veda and other scriptures. Understand the philosophy behind them. Once done, a wise man will leave the scriptures behind and take only the knowledge. Just like anyone interested in the grains will leave the husk behind. Scriptures are only a means and not the end.

There is so many scriptures to study. Life time is so little. On top of that, there are crores of obstacles. Hence the jist of these scriptures have to be studied just like a swan can drink milk and leave out the water.

One may be able to surround and lock air, or cut the sky into pieces, or weave the waves into a chain. But one can not put any trust in your longevity. You cannot do anything to be assured to live longer.

Travelers seek shade to rest during the journey. They may meet others there. After taking rest, they proceed on their journey. Our associations in life are also temporary just like the travelers with other people at the resting place.

Mother, father, son, brother, friends, relatives, wife and other acquaintances - none of them are permanent. Our associations with them are as temporary as those between animals at a water hole, or logs of wood floating in the river.

- garuDa purANa

Man does not do what he is meant to do. He sleeps when he should be alert. He is scared of things which he must believe (and vice-versa). This being the story, is there anything that can stop him from being destroyed (killed).

People trip even after seeing the obstacle. People don't understand the scriptures even after listening to them. Even of studying, knowledge still eludes them. This can only be attributed to providence.

- garuDa purANa

When in the womb, or ill, or attending a funeral, or listening to the scriptures a man gets some clarity on his thoughts. (In the womb, his mind is not corrupted by the world). If only wisdom found in such situations would stay with them all along; every one would be liberated from this world.

श्रद्धया धार्यते धर्मो बहुभिर्नार्थराशिभिः ।
निष्किंचना हि मुनयः श्रद्धावन्तो दिवंगताः ॥

Dedication and perseverance is the key to following Dharma - the moral code of life. Dharma can not be followed by having heaps of money. Mendicants and saints have attained salvation by strictly following Dharma and not by earning lot of wealth.

- गरुड पुराण

After much difficulty does one get a human life (in this endless cycle of life and deaths). Even after getting one, I did not live it by Dharma (the moral code of life). So laments a man who just realizes that he can not end the cycle with his life.

If a person showing lot of interest in sensory pleasure claims that he has the knowledge of the universe, then he neither knows the real meaning of the universe nor that of karma (actions). He must be considered as a rogue and ostracized
