सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - असंमाने तपोवृद्धिः

असंमाने तपोवृद्धिः संमानाच्च तपःक्षयः ।
पूजया पुण्यहानिः स्यान्निंदया सद्गतिर्भवेत् ॥

asammAne tapo vRuddiH sammAnAt cha tapaH kShayaH ।
pUjayA puNyahAniH syAnnindayA sadgatirbhavet ॥

When you do penance in isolation your penance gets stronger. When you accept to be respected by followers, then the power of your penance decreases. When people worship you then your good karma erodes. When they do not, you are on your way to a good death.
