रामायण - किष्किंधा - धर्म


हित्वा धर्मं तथार्थं च कामं यस्तु निषेवते ।
स वृक्षाग्रे यथा सुप्तः पतितः प्रतिबुध्यते ॥

hitvA dharmam tathA artham cha kAmam yastu niShevate ।
sa vRukSHagre yathA suptaH patitaH pratibuddhyate ॥

He who indulges in Kama having forgotten about dharma (morality) and even artha(wealth) will realize his mistake only after he is hurt. Just like a person who is sleeping on a branch of the tree. He will be woken up only when he falls.

रामायणमञ्जरी - किष्किन्धा - मित्राणां सहाय


पदस्था विषमस्थानां मित्राणां न भवन्ति ये ।
आयासिता तैर्जननी गर्भभारेण केवलम् ॥

padasthA viShamasthAnAm mitrANAm na bhavanti ye ।
AyAsitA taiH jananI garbha bhAreNa kevalam ॥

Those who do not help their friends in distress in spite of occupying high positions of power as useless alive. They only troubled their mothers by burdening her during pregnancy. There is no other achievement during their lives.

न चातिप्रणयः कार्यः कर्तव्यो प्रणयश्च ते ।
उभयं हि महान् दोषस्तस्मादंतरदृग्भव ॥

na cha ati praNayaH kAryaH kartavyo praNayashcha te ।
ubhayam hi mahAn doShaH tasmAt antaradRugbhava ॥

One must not be too close to the king. Nor should one ignore him. Both strategies are flawed and are dangerous. Hence one must be wise and employ a middle path.

ज्येष्ठो भ्राता पिता चैव यश्च विद्यां प्रयच्छति ।
त्रयस्ते पितरो ज्ञेया धर्मे वर्त्मनि वर्तिनः ॥

रामायण - किष्किंधा - धर्म वात्सल्य


यवीयानात्मनः पुत्रः शिष्यश्चापि गुणोदितः ।
पुत्रवत्ते त्रयश्चिंत्या धर्मश्चेदत्र कारणम् ॥

If one wishes to follow Dharma, then he must treat his brother, his son and his disciple - all three of them equally as if they were his children.

न हि धर्मार्थसिद्ध्यर्थं पानमेवं प्रशस्यते ।
पानादर्थश्च धर्मश्च कामश्च परिहीयते ॥

Intoxication is not conducive to following Dharma or gaining wealth. If one continues to drink, he will not be able to follow Dharma, accumulate wealth or enjoy lust.

राजभिर्धृतदण्डास्तु कृत्वा पापानि मानवाः |
निर्मलाः स्वर्गमायान्ति सन्तः सुकृतिनो यथा ||

If a sinner gets the right punishment (from a king) then he becomes pure again. He shall go to heaven just like people who have always done only good work.

मूलमर्थस्य संरक्ष्यमेष कार्यविदां नयः |
मूले हि सति सिध्यन्ति गुणाः पुष्पफलोद्गमाः ||

The real essence (root) of an endeavor must not be lost. This is what all the successful people say. The root is the heart of the tree. If the root is protected, only then can one expect to see flowers and fruits.
