सुभाषितसुधानिधि - कृपणः उदारः


उभयोर्नास्ति भोगेच्छा परार्थं धनसंचयः ।
कृपणोदारयोः पश्य तथापि महदंतरम् ॥

हितोपदेश - मित्रलाभ - अर्थ


उपार्जितानामर्थानां त्याग एव हि रक्षणम् ।
तडागोदरसंस्थानां परीवाह इवांभसाम् ॥

The only way one must protect the wealth accumulated is by donating a part of it to the needy. That way those who have no money will not be antagonistic towards him. A water in the tank is protected (during rainy seasons) by creating small channels that lead water out of the tank.

उत्पाद्य पुत्राननृणांश्च कृत्वा
    वृत्तिं च तेभ्योऽनुविधाय कांचित् ।
स्थाने कुमारीः प्रतिपाद्य सर्वाः
    अरण्यसंस्थोऽथ मुनिर्बुभूषेत् ॥

One must beget children. He must make his son free from any debt. Teach him something using which he can earn some money. He must get all his daughters married and settled in good. After all that he must go to a forest and desire to become a saint.

मनुस्मृति - धर्मिष्टः


आर्षं धर्मोपदेशं च वेदशास्त्राविरोधिना ।
यस्तर्केणानुसंधत्ते स धर्मं वेद नेतारः ॥

The preachings of sages regarding the moral code of conduct are on one side. The ancient scriptures are the other side. Both supplement each other. But only the person who reconciles both of them with sound logic can be called as "righteous". If not, he would just be another blind follower.

आयासशतलब्धस्य प्राणेभ्योऽपि गरीयसः ।
गतिरेकैव वित्तस्य दानं शेषा विपत्तयः ॥

Wealth is hard-earned (by hundred difficult ways) and dearer than life. There is only one way it must be spent - by donating to the needy and worthy. All other ways are only inviting trouble.
