हितोपदेश - विग्रह - दैवात्

सेवितव्यो महावृक्षः फलछायासमन्वितः ।
यदि दैवात्फलं नास्ति छाया केन निवार्यते ॥

sevitavyo mahAvRukShaH phalaChAyA samanvitaH ।
yadi daivAt phalam nAsti ChAyA kena nivAryate ॥

One must always take shelter of a big tree with lots of fruits and shade. Just in case due to bad luck, there are no fruits - still you will have the shade. Who can take that way from you?

सर्वहिंसानिवृत्ता ये नराः सर्वंसहाश्च ये ।
सर्वस्याश्रयभूताश्च ते नराः स्वर्गगामिनः ॥

sarva himsaa nivRuttA ye narAH sarvaM sahAshcha ye ।
sarvaashraya bhUtAshcha te narAH svargagAminaH ॥

Those who renounce every form of violence, face all miseries with courage and patience and give shelter to all who seek refuge - will go to heaven.

स बन्धुर्यो विपन्नानां आपदुद्धरणक्षमः ।
न तु दुर्विहितातीतवस्तूपालंभपण्डितः ॥

sa bandhuH yaH vipannanAm Apat uddhAraNa kShamaH ।
na tu durvihita atIta vastu upAlambha panDitaH ॥

He is a real friend (or relative) who can get people out of trouble. A person can not be a friend who can not manage other people's troubles or keep reminding them about past failures.

हितोपदेश - परिवर्तनि संसारे

स जातो येन जातेन याति वंशः समुन्नतिं ।
परिवर्तनि संसारे मृतः को वा न जायते ॥

sa jato yena jAtena yAti vamshaH samunnatim ।
parivartani samsAre mRutaH ko vA na jAyate ॥

He is remembered to be born if by his birth the family benefits and prospers. In this eternal world, what is so great is being re-born? Everyone does.

यस्मिन् देशे न संमानो न मित्राणि न बांधवाः ।
न च विद्यागमः कश्चित्तं देशं परिवर्जयेत् ॥

yasmin deshe na sammAno na mitrANi na baandhavAH ।
na cha vidyAgamaH kashchittam desham parivarjayet ॥

One must never live in a country where he does not have respect, no friends, no relatives, no opportunities to study. He must leave such a state immediately.

हितोपदेश - मित्रलाभ - सज्जन संगः

यदि सत्संगनिरतो भविष्यसि भविष्यसि ।
तथाऽसज्जनगोष्ठीषु पतिष्यसि पतिष्यसि ॥

yadi satsanga nirato bhaviShyasi bhaviShyasi ।
tathA asajjana goShThIShu patiShyasi patiShyasi ॥

If you always stay in the company of virtuous people, you will live and prosper. If you fall into bad company, you will definitely fall.

हितोपदेश - मित्रलाभ - अशक्यं

यदशक्यं न तच्छक्यं यच्छक्यं शक्यमेव तत् ।
नोदके शकटं याति न नौका गच्छति स्थले ॥

yad ahakyam na tat shakyam yad shakyam shakyameva tat ।
na udake shakaTam yAti na naukA gacChati sthale ॥

That which is impossible will never be possible. That which is possible will always remain possible. A cart can not go over water and a ship can not move over land.

हितोपदेश - मित्रलाभ - दुरात्मनः

न धर्मशास्त्रं पठतीति कारणं
    न चापि वेदाध्ययनं दुरात्मनः ।
स्वभाव एवात्र तथातिरिच्यते
    यथा प्रकृत्या मधुरं गवां पयः ॥

na dharmashAstram paThatIti kAraNam
    na chApi vedAdhyayanam durAtmanaH ।
svabhAva eva atra tathA atirichyate
    yathA prakRutyaa madhuraM gAvaM payaH ॥

A rogue is rogue for ever. It doe not matter if he is studying the moral code of life, or the vedas. He will stay true to his innate nature. Just like it is natural for cow's milk to be sweet, it is natural for them to wicked.

हितोपदेश - मित्रलाभ - मुखरः

न गणस्याग्रतो गच्छेत्सिद्धे कार्ये समं फलम् ।
यदि कार्यविपत्तिः स्यात् मुखरस्तत्र हन्यते ॥

na gaNaysa agrato gacchet siddhe kArye samam phalam।
yadi kArya vipattiH syAt mukharaH tatra hanyate ॥

- hitopadesha, mitralabha

One must not go in front of a group (as a leader). If the work gets done, then every one gets equal profits. If it goes wrong, then people will kill the leader here.

[Translator's note: This is perhaps relevant when it is an unknown group of people - like a mob that has no time to think about morality, This does not deter a good leader from leading 'his' men to glory.]

हितोपदेश - मित्रलाभ - वैद्यः

धनिकः श्रोत्रियो राजा नदी वैद्यस्तु पञ्चमः ।
पञ्च यत्र न विद्यन्ते न कुर्यात्तत्र संस्थितिम् ॥

dhanikaH shrotriyaH rAjA nadI vaidyastu panchamaH ।
pancha yatra na vidyante na kuryAt tatra samsthitim ॥

- hitopadesha, mitralAbha

One must not live in a town that does not have these five - rich people (to provide employment), wise men (to consult), king (to maintain order), a river (to provide life) and a doctor.

हितोपदेश - सुहृद्भेद - दुर्जन विद्या

दूरादुच्छ्रितपाणिराद्रनयनः प्रोच्छासितार्धासनो
    गाढालिंगनतत्परः प्रियकथाप्रश्नेषु दत्तादरः।
अंतर्गूढविषो बहिर्मधुमयश्चातीव मायापटुः
    को नामायमपूर्वनाटकविधिर्यः शिक्षितो दुर्जनैः ॥

dUrAd ucChrita pANiH Adra nayanaH procChAsita ardha Asano
    gADhAlingana tatparaH priyakathA prashneShu dattAdaraH ।
antar gUDha viSho bahir madhumayashcha atIva mAyA paTuH
    ko nAma ayam apUrva nATaka vidhiH yaH shikShito durjanaiH ॥

They raise both their hands from far off to welcome you. Their eyes are moist with tears when they see you. They happily give half their seat for you to sit. They are restless until they hug you tight. They show a lot of interest by esquiring about wellness of mutual friends. Inside they hide poison while their exterior is too sweet like honey. Such are the acts of villains. Wonder what is that stream of acting called which these rogues have so well mastered?

हितोपदेश - विग्रह - दोषाः

दुर्मंत्रिणं कमुपयान्ति न नीतिदोषाः
    संतापयन्ति कमपथ्यभुजं न रोगाः ।
कं श्रीर्न दर्पयति कं न निहन्ति मृत्युः
    कं स्त्रीकृता न विषयाः परितापयन्ति ॥

durmantriNaM kam upayAnti na nItidoShAH
    santApayanti kaM apathyabhujam na rogAH ।
kam shrIH na darpayati kam na nihanti mRutyuH
    kam strIkRutA na viShayAH paritApayanti ॥

Which bad minister is immune to the after effects of his ill advice? Who does not fall sick after eating bad food? Who does not become arrogant when he becomes rich? Who does death spare? Who does not get agitated (excited) by the pleasure a woman can give.

हितोपदेश - गुणगणनारंभे

गुणगणनारंभे पतति न कठिनी सुसंभ्रमा यस्य ।
तेनांबा यदि सुतिनी वद वंध्या कीदृशी भवति ॥

guNa gaNanA aaraMbhe patati na kaThinI susaMbhramA yasya ।
tenAmbA yadi sutinI vada vandhyA kIdRushI b havati ॥

When one starts counting good qualities, if out finger does not point enthusiastically at someone then what can we say about his mother. If she is a mother indeed, then who can be called as 'childless'? Ergo, having a son without good qualities is equivalent to not having a son (or worse).

कीटोऽपि सुमनःसंगादारोहति सतां शिरः ।
अश्मापि याति देवत्वं महद्भिः सुप्रतिष्ठितः ॥

kITaH api sumanaH sangAd Arohati satAm shiraH ।
ashmApi yAti devatvam mahadbhiH supratiShThitaH ॥

Along with the flower an insect also gets its place on top of the head of a virtuous men. Just like that, even a stone attains divinity if it is installed by a virtuous noble man.

क्षमी दाता गुणग्राही स्वामी दुःखेन लभ्यते ।
शुचिर्दक्षोऽनुरक्तश्च जाने भृत्योऽपि दुर्लभः ॥

kShamI dAtA guNagrAhI svAmI duHkhena labhyate ।
shuchiH dakShH anuraktaH cha jAne bhRutyaH api durlabhaH ॥

Rare is a master who is forgiving, charitable and who can recognize good qualities in servants. At the same time, it is very rare to find a servant who is clean, efficient and loyal.

हितोपदेश - संधि - बांधवः

आहवे व्यसने चैव दुर्भिक्षे शत्रुविग्रहे ।
राजद्वारे श्मशाने च यस्तिष्ठति स बांधवः ॥

Ahave vyasane chaiva durbhikShe shatruvigrahe ।
rAjadvAre shmashAne cha yastiShThati sa bAndhavaH ॥

A real friend is one who stands by you all the time - in a battle field, in troubled times, in poverty, when captured by enemies, at the door of a king (being summoned), in the cemetery.

आपद्युन्मार्गगमने कार्यकालात्ययेषु च ।
अपृष्टेनापि वक्तव्यं भृत्येन हितमिच्छता ॥

ApadyunmArgagamane kAryakAlatyayeShu cha ।
apRuShTenApi vaktavyaM bhRutyena hitam icChatA ॥

When the master is going down a dangerous path, or not done any work that is long pending a loyal servant must tell him otherwise, He must do this even when he is not spoken to.

हितोपदेश - मित्रलाभ - अनिष्टादिष्टलाभेपि

अनिष्टादिष्टलाभेपि नायतिर्जायते शुभा ।
यत्रास्ति विषसंसर्गोऽमृतम् तदपि मृत्यवे ॥

aniShTAdiShTalAbhepi nAyatirjAyate shubhA।
yatrAsti viShasamsargo amRutam tadapi mRutyuve ॥

A bad thing is always bad. Even if it gives you short term profit, the long term effect will always be bad. If a little bit of poison is mixed with elixir, the result is still death.

शरीरस्य गुणानां च दूरमत्यंतमंतरम् ।
शरीरं क्षणविध्वंसि कल्पांतस्थायिनो गुणाः ॥

sharIrasya guNAnAm cha dUram atyantam antaraM ।
sharIram kShaNa vidhvamsi kalpAnta sthAyino guNAH ॥

There is a lot of difference between body and the qualities it possesses. The body is short lived. But its nature does not die till the end of time. People still talk about the qualities (good or bad) of people long after they are dead.

आधिव्याधिपरितापादद्य श्वो वा विनाशिने ।
को हि नाम शरीराय धर्मापेतं समाचरेत् ॥

Adhi vyAdhi paritApAt adya shvaH vA vinAshine ।
ko hi nAma sharIrAya dharmApetaM samAcaret ॥

This nameless body is destined to be destroyed by illness - of body or mind. It's only a matter of today or tomorrow. Why should one do any thing against dharma (moral code of life) for the sake of this body?
