गरुड पुराण - अनित्यता

यथा हि पथिकः कश्चिच्छायामाश्रित्य विश्रमेत् ।
विश्रम्य च पुनर्गच्छेत् तद्वद्भूतसमागमः ॥

yathA hi pathikaH kashchit ChAyAm Ashritya vishramet ।
vishramya cha punar gachChet tadvat bhUta samAgamaH ॥

- garuDa purANa

Travelers seek shade to rest during the journey. They may meet others there. After taking rest, they proceed on their journey. Our associations in life are also temporary just like the travelers with other people at the resting place.

भागवत - प्राराब्ध

यथामयोऽसाधुचिकित्सितो नृणां
    पुनः पुनः सन्तुदति प्ररोहन् ।
एवं मनोऽपक्वकषायकर्म
    कुयोगिनं विध्यति सर्वसंगम् ॥

- भागवत

yathA mayaH asAdhu chikitso nRuNAm
    punaH punaH santudati prarohan ।
evam manaH apakva kaShAya karma
    kuyoginam vidhyati sarva sangam ॥

- bhAgavata

A disease not treated completely, always grows back again and again. Just like that the mind of bad yogi is plagued with consequences of his actions from previous births. This leads him to be attached to everything material.

रामायण - अयोध्या - अनित्यता

यथा काष्ठं च काष्ठं च समेयातां महार्णवे
    समेत्य च व्यपेयातां कालमासाद्य कञ्चन ।
एवं भार्याश्च पुत्राश्च ज्ञातयश्च धनानि च
    समेत्य व्यवधावन्ति ध्रुवो ह्येषां विना भवः ॥

- रामायण, अयोध्या

yathA kAShTham cha kAShTham cha sameyAtAm mahArNave
sametya cha vyapeyAtAm kAlamAsAdya kanchana ।
evam bhAryAH cha putrAH cha jnAtayaH cha dhanAni cha
sametya vyavadhAvanti dhruvo hyeShAm vinA bhavaH ॥

Just like how sticks floating in the sea come together for some time and later drift away, so is man's associations with his kin - wife, son, relatives and wealth. They may seem like it all came running together for you. But you can be certain that you will have to part with them.

ज्ञान

यथा तालं विना रागः यथा मानं विना नृपः ।
यथा दानं विना हस्ती तथा ज्ञानं विना यतिः ॥

yathA tAlam vinA rAgaH yathA mAnam vinA nRupaH ।
yathA dAnam vinA hastI tathA jnAnam vinA yatiH ॥

A seer without knowledge is as useless as music without timing, king without dignity or an elephant without rut.

गरुड पुराण - अनित्यता

यत्प्रातः संस्कृतं भोज्यं सायं तच्च विनश्यति ।
तदन्नरससंपुष्टे काये का नाम नित्यता ॥

yatprAtaH saMskRutaM bhojyaM sAyam taccha vinashyati ।
tad anna rasa sampuShTe kAye kA nAma nityatA ॥

Even when food is very well cooked in the morning, it gets spoilt by evening. How can a body that is built from the essence of such food be permanent?

मोहमुद्गर स्तोत्र - तृष्णा

मूढ जहीहि धनागमतृष्णां
    कुरु सद्बुद्धिं मनसि वितृष्णाम् ।
यल्लभसे निजकर्मोपत्तं
    वित्तं तेन विनोदय चित्तम् ॥

- मोहमुद्गर स्तोत्र

mUDha jahIhi dhanAgama tRuShNAm
    kuru sadbuddhiM manasi vitRuShNAm ।
yallabhase nijakarmopAttam
    vittam tEna vinodaya chittam ॥

-mohamudgarastotra

Oh fool! give up the greed for wealth. Keep faith in the truth. Make your mind free from greed. You will get what you are entitled to because of your prior actions. Be happy with that.

अष्टावक्रगीता - मोक्ष

मुक्तिमिच्छसि चेत्तात विषयान् विषवत्त्यजेः ।
क्षमार्जवदया शौचं सत्यं पीयूषवत् पिबेः ॥

mokSham icChasi chet tAta viShayAn viShavat tyajeH ।
kShamArjavadayA shaucham satyaM pIyUShavat pibeH ॥

- aShTAvakragIta

If you want to attain salvation, then you should shun sensory pleasures as if it were poison. You must embrace forgiveness, simplicity, compassion, cleanliness, truth as if it were elixir.
