स्त्रीणामार्यस्वभावानां परमं दैवतं पतिः ।
नातो विशिष्टं पश्यामि बांधवं विमृशंत्यहम् ॥

Wealth is incomplete if one does not have a charitable mind. Speech is incomplete and useless if it is not truthful. Education is incomplete unless it helps you subdue your emotion. A lady without her husband is similarly incomplete.

One cannot change the innate nature of any being. If you cut down a neighbouring mango tree and treat the neem tree very well by pouring milk at it, it will not become any sweeter.

अत्येति रजनी यातु सा न प्रनिवर्तते ।
यत्येव यमुना पूर्णा समुद्रं लवणार्णवम् ॥

atyeti rajanI yAtu sA na pratinivartate ।
yAtyeva yamunA pUrNA samudram lavaNArNavam ॥

Night passes. It never comes back. Yamuna also flows forward towards the sea and becomes one with the sea (salty). It will never come back (it will not become sweet again). Time also passes and never comes back.

Any accumulated wealth can dissolve in due time. Any position of power attained may come to an end. All the relations (children, wife) come to an end in death. There is nothing in this world that is permanent.

    समेत्य च व्यपेयातां कालमासाद्य कञ्चन ।
एवं भार्याश्च पुत्राश्च ज्ञातयश्च धनानि च
    समेत्य व्यवधावन्ति ध्रुवो ह्येषां विना भवः ॥

yathA kAShTham cha kAShTham cha sameyAtAm mahArNave
sametya cha vyapeyAtAm kAlamAsAdya kanchana ।
evam bhAryAH cha putrAH cha jnAtayaH cha dhanAni cha
sametya vyavadhAvanti dhruvo hyeShAm vinA bhavaH ॥

Just like how sticks floating in the sea come together for some time and later drift away, so is man's associations with his kin - wife, son, relatives and wealth. They may seem like it all came running together for you. But you can be certain that you will have to part with them.

रामायण - अयोध्या - पितुर्वचन


धर्मो हि परमो लोके धर्मे सत्यं प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
धर्मसंश्रितमेतच्च पितुर्वचनमुत्तमम् ॥

Nothing is above the Dharma (the moral code of life). There is no greater truth than dharma. Following one's father's advice is hence the first thing to do (given that his advice is according to dharma).
