समयोचितपद्यरत्नमालिका - अध्ययन जप दान

संतोषस्त्रिषु कर्तव्यः कलत्रे भोजने धने ।
त्रिषु चैव न कर्तव्योऽध्ययने जपदानयोः ॥

One must observe strict limits when dealing with wife, food and wealth. No limits must be there in study, penance and charity.

शौर्ये तपसि दाने च यस्य न प्रथितं यशः ।
विद्यायामर्थलाभे वा मातुरुच्चार एव सः ॥

shaurye tapasi dAne ca yasya na prathitam yashaH ।
vidyAyAm artha lAbhe vA mAtuH ucchAra eva saH ॥

One must have attained fame in any of the below - courage, penance, charity, education or accumulation of wealth. If one is not able to do so, then his life is a waste - as if his mother gave birth to just a lump of flesh.

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - भयं नास्ति जाग्रतः

पठतो नास्ति मूर्खत्वं जपतो नास्ति पातकम् ।
मौनिनः कलहो नास्ति न भयं चास्ति जाग्रतः ॥

paThato nAsti mUrkhatvam japato nAsti pAtakam।
mauninaH kalaho nAsti na bhayaM chAsti jAgrataH ॥

If you read well, you will never appear foolish. You will not commit heinous crimes if you meditate regularly. If you stay silent, you will not get into fights. If you are alert, you will not have any fear.

हारीत - भोजन विधि

विद्यातपोऽधिकानां च प्रथमासनमुच्यते ।
पंक्तौ सह स्थितानां तु भोजनादि समं स्मृतम् ॥

vidyA tapo adhikAnAm cha prathama aasanam uchyate ।
panktau saha sthitAnAm tu bhojanAdi samam smRutam ॥

People who have attained greatness by having excess of education and penance must be seated ahead of every one. But once, people are all seated in the same row, they must all be served equally (in terms of food, respect etc...)

यथाश्व रथहीनास्तु रथो वाश्वैर्यथा विना ।
एवं तपोऽप्यविद्यस्य विद्यवाऽप्यतपस्विनः ॥

Just like horses without chariot and chariot without horses are useless, knowledge and penance are useless without each other.

evam tapashcha vidyA cha samyuktam bheShajam mahat ॥

When food is mixed with honey or when honey is mixed with anything else, it makes a good medicine. Just like that a combination of penance and knowledge is a good medicine capable of curing anything.

द्वावंभसि निवेष्टव्यौ गले बद्ध्वा दृढां शिलाम् ।
धनवंतमदातारं दरिद्रं चातपस्विनम् ॥

These two should be thrown into the sea after tying heavy stones tightly to their necks - a wealthy person who does not do charity, a poor guy who does not do penance.

क्षांत्या शुद्ध्यंति विद्वांसो दानेनकार्यकारिणः ।

A scholar cleanses himself by forgiving. A sinner by resorting to charities. A secret sin is cleansed by meditation. Those who understand the vedas cleanse themselves by penances.

अदृढं च हतं ज्ञानं प्रमादेन हतं श्रुतम् ।
संदिग्धो हि हतो मंत्रो व्यग्रचित्तो हतो जपः ॥

sandigdho hi hato mantro vyagra chitto hato japaH ॥

That knowledge that is not firm is useless. Education is ruined if you indulge. If you doubt, you will not get hold on the hymn (spell). A restless mind can not meditate (penance).

मनुस्मृति - बुद्धिर्ज्ञानेन शुध्यति

अद्भिर्गात्राणि शुध्यन्ति मनः सत्येन शुध्यति ।
विद्यातपोभ्यां भूतात्मा बुद्धिर्ज्ञानेन शुध्यति ॥

vidyA tapobhyAm bhUtAtma buddhiH jnAnena shudhyati ॥

Water cleanses the body parts. Mind is cleansed by truth. Education and penance will cleanse the human soul. Intellect is cleansed by knowledge.

ध्यानाभ्यासवशीकृतेन मनसा तन्निर्गुणं निष्क्रियं
    ज्योतिः किंछन योगिनो यदि परं पश्यन्ति पश्यन्तु ते ।
अस्माकं तु तदेव लोचनचमत्काराय भूयाच्चिरं
    कालिंदीपुलिनोदरे किमपि यन्नीलं महो धावति ॥

dhyAnAbhyAsa vashIkRutena manasA tannirguNaM niShkriyam
    jyotiH kiMchana yogino yadi paraM pashyanti pashyantu te ।
asmAkam tu tadeva lochana chamatkArAya bhUyAt chiram
    kAlindI pulinaH udare kimapi yannIlam maho dhAvati ॥

Let the saints see God in the form of a formless, quality-less, activity-less entity or a light. This may be possible since they have mastered the process of meditation. Let them have their ways. But for us, let God be always seen as that blue boy running and playing on the sands of Yamuna (Sri Krishna).

अभिज्ञान शाकुंतला - तपस्विनः

प्राणानामनिलेन वृत्तिरुचिता सत्कल्पवृक्षे वने
    तोये काञ्चानपद्मरेणुकपिशे धर्माभिषेकक्रिया ।
ध्यानं रत्नशिलातलेषु विबुधस्त्रीसंनिधौ संयमः
    यत्कांक्षंति तपोभिरन्यमुनयः तस्मिंस्तपस्यंत्यमी ॥

prANAm anilena vRutti ruchitA sat kalpavRukShe vane
    toye kAnchAna padmareNukapishe dharmAbhiSheka kriyA ।
dhyAnaM ratnashilAtakeShu vibudha strI sannidhau saMyamaH
     yat kAnkShati tapobhiH anya munayaH tasmimstapasyantyamI ॥

There is a magical tree that can give all they desire. But beneath that, they are just doing rythmic breathing. There is a thin layer of pollen from lotus flowers over the water of the pond which is giving it a gold like glitter. In such a water they are only doing holy ablutions. They sit among gems and other precious stones and meditate. They have their senses under control even in presence of beautiful ladies of heaven. There are other people who do penances to be in such a situation. But, these saints are doing penances even after being among such luxuries.

पद्मनंदन वैराग्य शतक - बुद्बुदभंगुरं धनं

ज्ञात्वा बुद्बुदभंगुरं धनमिदं दीपप्रकंपं वपुः
    तारुण्यं तरलेक्षणाक्षितरलं विद्युच्चलं दोर्बलं ।
रे रे जीव गुरुप्रसादवशतः किंचिद्विधेहि द्रुतं
    दानध्यानतपोविधानविषयं पुण्यं पवित्रोचितम् ॥

jnAtvA budbuda bhanguram dhanam idam dIpa prakampam vapuH
    tAruNyam taralekShaNa akShitaralam vidyccalam dorbalam ।
re re jIva guruprasAdavashataH kinchid vidheha drutam
    dAna dhyAna tapaH vidhAna viShayaM puNyaM pavitrocitam ॥

- padamanandanasya vairAgya shataka

Wealth is as fickle as a bubble on water surface. The body is as uncertain as flick of a flame. Youth is as reliable as the trembling look from the corner of the eye of a damsel. The strength in your arms are like lightning. Given all these uncertainties, one must accumulate good karma as early as possible. Start doing some charity, meditation, penance and other good deeds to earn some good karma.

रामायण - उत्तरकाण्ड - तपः

अध्रुवे हि शरीरे यो न करोति तपोऽर्जनम् ।
स पश्चात्ताप्यते मूढो मृतो दृष्ट्वात्मनो गतिम् ॥

sa pashcAttApyate mUDho mRuto dRuShTvA Atmano gatim ॥

This is a destructible body that we live in. So, we must do our best to attain good karma by doing a lot of penance. If not, you will look upon yourself as a fool in your afterlife.

हितोपदेश - सुहृद्भेद - मेधावी

शीतवातातपक्लेशान् सहंते ये पराश्रिताः ।
तदंशेनापि मेधावी तपस्तप्त्वा सुखी भवेत् ॥

shIta vAta Atapa kleshAn sahante ye parAshritAH ।
tadaMshenApi medhAvI tapas taptvA sukhI bhavet ॥

A person may face a lot of miseries when he is dependent on others - cold, wind and heat. If he is willing to even withstand a fraction of that discomfort and perform penances, he can be very happy and independent.

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - आत्मानां रक्षेत् प्रमादतः

नित्यं कोपात्तपो रक्षेच्छ्रियं रक्षेच्च मत्सरात् ।
विद्यां मानावमानाभ्यामात्मानां च प्रमादतः ॥

- सुभाषितसुधानिधि

One must protect his penance from being disturbed by anger. Protect wealth from jealousy (about wealthier people). Protect education from ego. Protect self from being irresponsible.

याज्ञवल्क्य - विद्या तपः वृत्ति

न विद्यया केवलया तपसा वाऽपि पात्रता ।
यत्र वृत्तमिमे चोभे तद्दि पात्रं प्रकीर्तितम् ॥

One does not become eligible (for anything) just being educated or having done some penance. One must have good character to augment the other two.

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - तपः ज्ञान यज्ञ दान

तपः परं कृतयुगे त्रेतायां ज्ञानमुच्यते ।
द्वापरे यज्ञमेवाहुर्दानमेव कलौ युगे ॥

Penance is the best way to live in the Kruta Yuga. In Treta yuga, attaining knowledge was the best way. In Dwapara Yuga, performing relegious rituals was the way to live. In Kali Yuga (present day) donating generously to the needy is the only right way to live.

भागवत - अधर्म

तपः शौचं दया सत्यं इति पादाः कृते कृताः ।
अधर्मांशैस्त्रयो भग्नाः स्मयसंगमदैस्तव ॥

- भागवत

Penance, cleanliness, compassion and truth were the feet on which the Kruta Yuga world stood. By the influence of adharma (sin) three of them are destroyed in present time.

गरुड पुराण - स्वभाव

परावाताः शिलाहाराः कदाचिदपि चातकाः |
न पिबन्ति महितोयं व्रतनस्ते भवन्ति किम् ||

A pigeon eats (survives on ) just the stalks of corn. The chataka bird does never drink water from the ground. It only drinks water directly from the clouds when it rains. The above birds are only following their nature. Can we say they are penancing?
