सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - कोप


यस्मिन् रुष्टे भयं नास्ति तुष्टे नैव धनागमः ।
निग्रहानुग्रहौ न स्तः स रुष्टः किं करिष्यति ॥

yasmin ruShTe bhayam nAsti tuShTe naiva dhanAgamaH ।
nigrahAn anugrahau na staH sa ruShTaH kim kariShyati ॥

If you are angry and no one is scared, then it is useless. Similarly if you are pleased and no one benefits from it, it is again a waste. There is no value attached to your anger or being pleased if does not mean anything to any one.

निमित्तमुद्दिश्य हि यः प्रकुप्यति
    ध्रुवं स तस्यापगमे प्रशाम्यति ।
अकारणद्वेषपरोहि यो भवेत्
    कथं नरस्तं परितोषयिष्यति ॥

When one's anger has a specific source (reason), then the anger subsides naturally when the reason no longer exists. But if one is indulged in meaningless hatred then how can we find ways to placate him?

    सपदिक्रोधजितो लघुर्जनः ।
विजितेन जितस्य दुर्मते

Great wise men have overcome anger permanently. Simpler men have been consumed/conquered due because they succumbed to anger. There can never be a fair contest between the winners and the conquered or those who have overcome anger and those who can not.

    कुभोजनं क्रोधमुखी च भार्या ।

    दहन्ति चैतानि जनं विनाग्निम् ॥

These things will burn a man alive without any fire - living in a bad village, serving a bad master, a bad meal, an angry wife, idiot son, widow daughter.

असंकल्पाज्जयेत् कामं क्रोधं कामविवर्जनात् ।
अर्थानर्थेक्षया लोभं भयं तत्त्वावमर्शनात् ॥

One must get over lust by teaching one self not to feel the need. By giving up lust, one can give up anger. One will give up greed once he realises that wealth is the source of so many miseries. Fear can be let go by proper understanding of philosophy.

A angry person can not understand what is to be said and what is to be left unsaid. He can not control himself. He can do anything (wrong) and speak anything (bad). Hence one must refrain from anger.

पद्मनन्दनस्य वैराग्यशतक - नरत्वं


दुष्प्राप्तं मकराकरे करतलाद्रत्नं निमग्नं यथा
    संसारेऽत्र तथा नरत्वमथ तत्प्राप्तं मया निर्मलम् ।
भ्रातः पश्य विमूढतां मम हहा नीतं यदेतन्मुदा
    कामक्रोध कुबोध मत्सर कुधीमायामहामोहतः ॥

Once a gem slips from hand into the sea, it is impossible to get it back. Similarly, one can if you lose the gem of human life in worldly affairs if he is stupid and gets drawn into lust, anger, ill-advice, jealousy, greed.

हीयते न प्रदीपेन क्षीयते नैव वह्निना |

शिशुपालवध - कोपः


सामवादाः सकोपस्य तस्य प्रत्युत दीपकाः |
प्रतप्तस्येव सहसा सर्पिषस्तोयबिन्दवः ||

When one is angry we should not try to placate him by talking sensibly and logically. Such talk will only aggravate his anger since it would show that his anger is not justified. If you sprinkle water over hot oil (or ghee) in the pan, it will agitate oil more.

दत्ते यः कुगतिं स हातुमुचितो रोषः स दोषः सताम् ||

A wise man must renounce anger. For anger has the following effect on people. It will cause distress. It will kill humility and friendship. It will beget anxiety. It will make you utter bad words (the unutterable). It will give rise to differences. It will cut short your fame. It will spread wickedness (among all of them who suffer from your anger). It will diminish all your collected good karma and let you die a horrible death.
