सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - कोप

यस्मिन् रुष्टे भयं नास्ति तुष्टे नैव धनागमः ।
निग्रहानुग्रहौ न स्तः स रुष्टः किं करिष्यति ॥

yasmin ruShTe bhayam nAsti tuShTe naiva dhanAgamaH ।
nigrahAn anugrahau na staH sa ruShTaH kim kariShyati ॥

If you are angry and no one is scared, then it is useless. Similarly if you are pleased and no one benefits from it, it is again a waste. There is no value attached to your anger or being pleased if does not mean anything to any one.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - क्रोध

निमित्तमुद्दिश्य हि यः प्रकुप्यति
    ध्रुवं स तस्यापगमे प्रशाम्यति ।
अकारणद्वेषपरोहि यो भवेत्
    कथं नरस्तं परितोषयिष्यति ॥

When one's anger has a specific source (reason), then the anger subsides naturally when the reason no longer exists. But if one is indulged in meaningless hatred then how can we find ways to placate him?

नास्ति कामसमो व्याधिः नास्ति मोहसमो रिपुः ।
नास्ति क्रोधसमो वह्निः नास्ति ज्ञानात्परं सुखम् ॥

There is no worse ailment than lust, no worse enemy as attachment, no fire more destructive than anger and no pleasure greater than knowledge.

These two are sharp thorns that hurt the body (and mind) very much - a poor man's desires and weak man's anger.

जितरोषरया महाधियः
    सपदिक्रोधजितो लघुर्जनः ।
विजितेन जितस्य दुर्मते
    र्मतिमद्भिः सह का विरोधिता ॥

Great wise men have overcome anger permanently. Simpler men have been consumed/conquered due because they succumbed to anger. There can never be a fair contest between the winners and the conquered or those who have overcome anger and those who can not.

सुभाषितरत्नसमुच्चय - दहन्ति विनाग्निम्

कुग्रामवासः कुजनस्य सेवा
    कुभोजनं क्रोधमुखी च भार्या ।
मूर्खश्च पुत्रो विधवा च कन्या
    दहन्ति चैतानि जनं विनाग्निम् ॥

kugraama vAsaH kujanasya sevA
    kubhojanam krodhamukhI cha bhAryA ।
mUrkhashcha putro vidhavA cha kanyA
    dahanti cha etAni janaM vinA agnim ॥

These things will burn a man alive without any fire - living in a bad village, serving a bad master, a bad meal, an angry wife, idiot son, widow daughter.

भागवत - काम क्रोध लोभ भय

असंकल्पाज्जयेत् कामं क्रोधं कामविवर्जनात् ।
अर्थानर्थेक्षया लोभं भयं तत्त्वावमर्शनात् ॥

arthAn arthekShayA lobham bhayam tattva avamarshanAt ॥

One must get over lust by teaching one self not to feel the need. By giving up lust, one can give up anger. One will give up greed once he realises that wealth is the source of so many miseries. Fear can be let go by proper understanding of philosophy.

वाच्यावाच्यं प्रकुपितो न विजानाति कर्हिचित् ।
नाकार्यमस्ति क्रुद्धस्य नावाच्यं विद्यते क्वचित् ॥

vAchya avAchya prakupito na vijAnAti karhichit ।
na akAryamasti kruddhasya na avAchyam vidyate kvachit ॥

A angry person can not understand what is to be said and what is to be left unsaid. He can not control himself. He can do anything (wrong) and speak anything (bad). Hence one must refrain from anger.

यः समुत्पतितं क्रोधं क्षमयैव निरस्यति ।
यथोरगस्त्वचं जीर्णां स वै पुरुष उच्यते ॥

A snake grows out of its skin, thereby shedding it. He alone can be called a complete man who can grow out of his anger using his patience.

स यंतेत्युच्यते सद्बिर्न यो रश्मिषु सज्जते ॥

'Sarathi' - the real meaning of the word is 'one who controls anger' that arises in the mind just like a horse. It does not just mean a 'charioteer'

दुष्प्राप्तं मकराकरे करतलाद्रत्नं निमग्नं यथा
    संसारेऽत्र तथा नरत्वमथ तत्प्राप्तं मया निर्मलम् ।
भ्रातः पश्य विमूढतां मम हहा नीतं यदेतन्मुदा
    कामक्रोध कुबोध मत्सर कुधीमायामहामोहतः ॥

    kAma krodha kubodha matsara kudhImAyA mahAmohataH ॥

Once a gem slips from hand into the sea, it is impossible to get it back. Similarly, one can if you lose the gem of human life in worldly affairs if he is stupid and gets drawn into lust, anger, ill-advice, jealousy, greed.

क्रुद्धः पापं न कुर्यात् कः क्रुद्धो हन्याद्गुरूनपि ।
क्रुद्धः पुरुषया वाचा नरः साधूनधिक्षिपेत् ॥

Who does not commit sins when he is angry? People are known to kill even their teachers even when they are angry. An angry person is even capable of hurting a noble man which could land him in trouble. So, one must not give himself into anger.

कामं क्रोधं मोहं लोभं त्यक्त्वात्मानं भावय कोऽहं ।
आत्मज्ञानविहीन मूढास्ते पच्यन्ते नरकनिगूढाः ॥

kAmam krodhaM moham lobhaM tyaktvA AtmAnam bhAvaya ko aham ।
AtmajnAna vihIna mUDhAH te pachyante narakanigUDhAH ॥

Give up lust, anger, attachement and greed. Stop and ask yourself "Who am I?". People without that knowledge will suffer in all kinds of hell.

हितोपदेश - सुहृद्भेद - कोप

प्रस्तावसदृशं वाक्यं सद्भावसदृशं प्रियम् ।
आत्मशक्तिसमं कोपं यो जानाति स पण्डितः ॥

Being able to talk according to context, liking some thing because of its good nature, to keep anger in one's limits; he is a wise man who can do the above.

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - आत्मानां रक्षेत् प्रमादतः

नित्यं कोपात्तपो रक्षेच्छ्रियं रक्षेच्च मत्सरात् ।
विद्यां मानावमानाभ्यामात्मानां च प्रमादतः ॥

One must protect his penance from being disturbed by anger. Protect wealth from jealousy (about wealthier people). Protect education from ego. Protect self from being irresponsible.

याज्ञवल्क्य - धर्म - सत्य शौच

सत्यमस्तेयमक्रोधो ह्रीः शौचं धीर्धृतिर्दमः ।
संयतेंद्रियता विद्या धर्मः सर्व उदाहृतः ॥

The following aspects living constitute Dharma - Truth, never stealing, no anger, remorse, cleanliness, intelligence to separate good and bad, calm mind, austerity, control over senses and good education

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - क्रोध

हीयते न प्रदीपेन क्षीयते नैव वह्निना |
नाश्यते रविणा नापि क्रोधरूपं तमो महत् ||

The darkness created by anger can not be reduced by a flame (like a candle), can not be burnt down by fire, can not be destroyed even by the sun-light. Hence one must stay away from anger.

शिशुपालवध - कोपः

सामवादाः सकोपस्य तस्य प्रत्युत दीपकाः |
प्रतप्तस्येव सहसा सर्पिषस्तोयबिन्दवः ||

When one is angry we should not try to placate him by talking sensibly and logically. Such talk will only aggravate his anger since it would show that his anger is not justified. If you sprinkle water over hot oil (or ghee) in the pan, it will agitate oil more.

सोमप्रभाचार्यस्य सूक्तिमुक्तावलि - रोषः

संतापं तनुते भिनत्ति विनयं सौहार्दमुत्सादय-
त्युद्वेगं जनयत्यवद्यवचनं सूते विधत्ते कलिम् |
कीर्तिं कृंतति दुर्मतिं वितरति व्याहन्ति पुण्योदयं
दत्ते यः कुगतिं स हातुमुचितो रोषः स दोषः सताम् ||

- सोमप्रभाचार्यस्य सूक्तिमुक्तावलि

A wise man must renounce anger. For anger has the following effect on people. It will cause distress. It will kill humility and friendship. It will beget anxiety. It will make you utter bad words (the unutterable). It will give rise to differences. It will cut short your fame. It will spread wickedness (among all of them who suffer from your anger). It will diminish all your collected good karma and let you die a horrible death.

संचितस्यापि महता वत्स क्लेशेन मानवैः |
यशसस्तपसश्चैव क्रोधो नाशकरः परः ||

People collect good qualities like fame and righteousness with all the hard work and care. But if they succumb to anger, then all of that goes away in an instant.
