समयोचितपद्यमालिका - आय व्यय

इदमेव हि पाण्डित्यं चातुर्यमिदमेव हि ।
इदमेव सुबुद्धित्त्वमायादल्पतरो व्ययः ॥

idameva subuddhitvam AyAd alpataro vyayaH ॥

हरिहर सुभाषित - परुष वाक्

इदमस्खलितं धारय वारय परुषाक्षरा वाचः ।
एकः सकलजनानां जगति रिपुः परुषवाक् पुरुषः ॥

idam askhalitam dhAraya vAraya paruSha akSharA vAchaH ।
ekaH sakalajanAnAM jagati ripuH paruShavAk puruShaH ॥

Don't let this slip your mind. One must never use harsh words. If one uses it, he will be hated by the entire world.

पञ्चरात्र - क्रतुः

इक्ष्वाकुशर्यातिययातिराममांधातृनाभागनृगांबरीषाः।
एते सकोशाः पुरुषाः सराष्ट्राः नष्टाः शरीरैः क्रतुभिर्धरन्ते ॥

ikShvAku sharyAti yayAti rAmamaMdhAtRu nAbhAga nRuga ambarIShAH ।
ete sakoshAH puruShA sarAShTrAH naShTAH sharIraiH kratubhiH dharante ॥

IkshvAku, Sharyati, Yayati, Rama, Mandhatru, Nabhaga, Nruga and Ambaresha - these are the names of great kings who ruled great kingdoms with great wealth. All of them got destroyed along with their bodies, wealth and kingdoms. They are alive today only because of their actions and fame.

आहवे व्यसने चैव दुर्भिक्षे शत्रुविग्रहे ।
राजद्वारे श्मशाने च यस्तिष्ठति स बांधवः ॥

A real friend is one who stands by you all the time - in a battle field, in troubled times, in poverty, when captured by enemies, at the door of a king (being summoned), in the cemetery.

पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रभेद - नृपतिः

आसन्नमेव नृपतिर्भजते मनुष्यं
    वुद्याविहीनमकुलीनमसंस्कृतं वा ।
प्रायेण भूमिपतयः प्रमदा लताश्च
    यत्पार्श्वतो भवति तत्परिवेष्टयन्ति ॥

Asannameva nRupatirbhajate manuShyaM
    vidyAvihInamakulInamasaMskRutaM vA ।
prAyeNa bhUmipatayaH pramAdA latAshcha
    yat pArshvato bhavati tat pariveShTayanti ॥

A king will confide with a person who is always close to him even if he is not well educated, not of noble family and neither has good conduct. Be it a weak king, women or a creeper - they all seek support in whatever is physically close to them.

आलस्यं यदि न भवेज्जगत्यनर्थः
    को न स्याद् बहु धनको बहुश्रुतो वा ।
आलस्यादियमवनिः ससागरांता
    संपूर्णा नरपशुभिश्च निर्धनैश्च ॥

Alasyam yadi na bhavet jagati anarthaH
    ko na syAd bahu dhanako bahushruto vA ।
AlasyAdiyamavaniH sasAgarAntA
    sampUrNA nara pashubhiH cha nirdhanaiH cha ॥

If there were no such thing as laziness in this world, who would be poor? Every one would be either rich or very learned. Because of laziness, this world (including the seas) is filled with animal like men (uneducated) and penniless people.

आयुः श्रियं यशो धर्मं लोकानाशिष एव च ।
हन्ति श्रेयांसि सर्वाणि पुंसो महदतिक्रमः ॥

hanti shreyAmsi sarvANi pumso mahadatikramaH ॥
