पञ्चतंत्र - मित्रता

मृगा मृगैः संगमनुव्रजन्ति
    गावश्चगोभिस्तुरगास्तुरंगैः ।
मूर्खाश्च मूर्खैः सुधियः सुधीभिः
    समानशीलव्यसनेषु सख्यम् ॥

mRugA mRugaiH sangama anuvrajanti
    gAvaH cha gobhiH turagAH turangaiH ।
mUrkhaH mUrkhaiH sudhibhiH sidhIbhiH
    samAna shIla vyasaneShu sakhyam ॥

Deer will have good time around deer, cows with other cows, horses with other horses, fools with other fools and the virtuous with other virtuous people. People of similar qualities will always go along well.

महानप्यल्पतां याति निर्गुणे गुणविस्तरः ।
आधाराधेयभावेन गजेंद्र इव दर्पणे ॥

Even a thing with great qualities will look common if viewed from a narrow/lowly point of view. The object inherits the property of the medium. When seen in a mirror, even an elephant looks small.

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - जन्म गुणाः

भवत्येकसले जन्म गंधस्तेषां पृथक् पृथक् ।
उत्पलस्य मृणालस्य मत्स्यस्य कुमुदस्य च ॥

bhavati ekasale janma gandhaH teShAm pRuthak pRuthak ।
utpalasya mRuNAlasya matsyasya kumudasya cha ॥

Even though all of these are born at the same place (the pond) they smell different - the blue lotus, the red lotus, water lily and the fish. Innate qualities shape the outcome much more than the environment.

पात्रापात्रविवेकोऽस्ति धेनुपन्नगयोरिव ।
तृणात्संजायते क्षीरं क्षीरात्संजायते विषम् ॥

pAtra apAtra viveko asti dhenu pannagayoH iva।
tRuNAt sanjAyate kShIram kShIrAt sanjAyate viSham ॥

There is definitely visible difference between good and the bad - just like the difference between a cow and a snake. One eats grass and gives milk. The other drinks the same milk and gives out venom.

समयोचितपद्यरत्नमालिका - गुणाः

गुणागुणज्ञेषु गुणा भवंति
    ते निर्गुणं प्राप्य भवंति दोषाः ।
आस्वाद्यतोयाः प्रभवंति नद्यः
    समुद्रमासाद्य भवन्त्यपेयाः ॥

guNA aguNa jneShu guNA bhavanti
    te nirguNam prApya bhavanti doShAH ।
aasvAdya toyAH prabhavanti nadyaH
    samudram aasAdya bhavanti apeyaaH ॥

If certain qualities are found in a person who can tell right from wrong, then he becomes virtuous. But if the same is found in a rogue, then it becomes a wickedness. Water in a river is so pleasant to drink. The same water becomes undrinkable when it reaches the sea.

भोजप्रबंध - महता

अनेके फणिनः संति भेकभक्षणतत्पराः ।
एक एव हि शेषोऽयं धरणीधरणक्षमः ॥

aneka phaNinaH santi bheka bhakShiNa tatparAH ।
eka eva hi sheShaH ayam dharaNI dharaNa kShamaH ॥

There are many snakes who are immersed in their usual activities of swallowing frogs. But there is only one - Shesha who is capable of holding the weight of the entire earth.

कुमारसंभव - सृष्टिः

वर्णप्रकर्षे सति कर्णिकारं
    दुनोति निर्गंधतया स्म चेतः ।
प्रायेण सामग्र्यविधौ गुणानां
    पराङ्मुखी विश्व सृजः प्रवृत्तिः ॥

varNa prakarShe sati karNikaaram
    dunoti nirgandhatayA sma chetaH ।
prAyena sAmagryavidhau guNAnAm
    parAnmukhI vishvasRujaH pravRuttiH ॥

The flowers of golden shower tree are bright in color, but disappoint due to the lack of fragrance. It is the nature of this Creator that he does not put in effort to make one thing good in all respects. He intentionally leaves out a few qualities in anything he makes.

कुमारसंभव - दोषो गुणसन्निपाते

अनंतरत्नप्रभवस्य यस्य
    हिमं न सौभाग्यविलोपि जातं ।
एको हि दोषो गुणसन्निपाते
    निमज्जतींदोः किरणेष्वांकः ॥

ananta ratna prabhAvasya yasya
    himam na saubhAgya vilopi jAtam ।
eko hi doSho guNasannipAte
    nimajjati indoH kiraNeShu aankaH ॥

The Himalaya has numerous virtuous qualities each one like a gem. His greatness is not concealed in spite of having snow all over him. His virtuous qualities are so many that it is not possible to see any vice that may exist. His glory is clearly evident in the moon light.

अन्योक्तिस्तबक - इक्षु गुणाः

सुक्षेत्रं तव जन्मभूरिति पुनः पर्वानुबंधादियं
    मेध्या मूर्तिरिति प्रभूतगरिमग्रामा न के के गुणाः ।
माधुर्यं परपीडितोऽपि धरसि क्रांतो गुरुग्रंथिभिः
    सांगं सज्जनचेष्टितं क्व भवता संप्राप्तमिक्षो वद ॥

sukShetram tava janmabhUriti punaH parva anubandhaadiyam
    medhyA mUrtiriti prabhUta garimagrAmA na ke ke guNAH ।
mAdhuryam parapIDito api sharasi krAnto guru granthibhiH
    sAngam sajjana cheShTitam kva bhavatA samprAptam ikSho vada ॥

Your home land is the ground. From there you grow upwards as if there are chapters and chapters. Your presence is auspicious. You have so many great qualities. You give out sweetness even when crushed. You body is stiff and yet you possess all the virtuous qualities. Tell me Sugar cane, how did you come to be like this?

सुभाषितरत्नभाण्डागार - गुण धर्म

स जीवति गुणा यस्य धर्मो यस्य स जीवति ।
गुणधर्मविहीनो यो निष्फलं तस्य जीवितम् ॥

sa jIvati guNA yasya dharma yasya sa jIvati ।
guNadharma vihIno yo niShphalam tasya jIvitam ॥

One must have righteous qualities and follow dharma. Only then he can be said to have lived. If one is devoid of both righteousness and dharma, his life is wasted.

शत्रोरपि गुणा वाच्या दोषा वाच्या गुरोरपि ।

sarvadaa sarva yatnena putre shishyavat aacharet ॥

A good quality has to be highlighted even if it is found in an enemy. If a vice is found in your teacher, that should be called out also. At all times, every effort must be made to treat a son like a student.

भारतमञ्जरी - उद्योग - पुण्य

विवेकालंकृतं चेतो रूपं गुणविवर्धितम् ।
सुहृद्बंधुवृता लक्ष्मीर्लक्षणं पुण्यकर्मणाम् ॥

viveka alamkRuta cheto rUpam guNa vivardhitam ।

These are qualities found in a fortunate person - mind is bestowed with wisdom, beauty is augmented with good character and wealth is to be spent when well wishing relatives and friends.

हितोपदेश - सुहृद्भेद - गुणः

मणिर्लुठति पादेषु काचः शिरसि धार्यते ।
यथैवास्तु तथैवास्तु काचः काचो मणिर्मणिः ॥

yathaivAstu tathaivAstu kAchaH kAchaH maNiH maNiH ॥

A gem may be worn on the foot where it get beaten often. A glass piece may be worn over the head. Let them be where they are. Wherever they are, a gem is a gem and glass piece is a glass piece.

सभारंजनशतक - पाषाणाः सर्व एव

पाषाणाः सर्व एवैते पद्मरागेषु को गुणः ।
प्रकाशः कश्चिदत्रस्तेऽपरत्र सन विद्यते ॥

pAShANAH sarva eva ete padmarAgeShu ko guNaH ।
prakAshaH kashchid atrAste aparatra sa na vidyate ॥

Ultimately all gems are stones. What is so great about rubies (padmaraaga)? Yes, these have a glitter in them that other stones don't have. It is very usual for people to generalize and lose sight of a gem among the ordinary - people, qualities etc...

नोदन्वानर्थितामेति सदांभोभिः प्रपूर्यते ।
आत्मा तु पात्रानां नेयः पात्रमायांति संपदः ॥

The mighty ocean never asks for anything. Still, it is always filled with water. One must make himself worthy first. Wealth will automatically follow.

सुभाषितसुधानिधि - गुणवान्

गुणैः शर्वकल्पोऽपि सीदत्येव निराश्रयः ।
अनर्घमपि माणिक्यं हेमाश्रयमपेक्षते ॥

guNaiH sharvakalpaH api sIdati eva nirAshrayaH ।
anarghamapi mANIkyaM hemAshrayam apekShate ॥

Even if a man has great qualities to be almost equal to Lord Shiva, he will wilt (decline) if he is not properly supported (by family, state, etc..). Even a extremely rare gem needs the support of gold to shine as an ornament.

गुणगणनारंभे पतति न कठिनी सुसंभ्रमा यस्य ।
तेनांबा यदि सुतिनी वद वंध्या कीदृशी भवति ॥

tenAmbA yadi sutinI vada vandhyA kIdRushI b havati ॥

When one starts counting good qualities, if out finger does not point enthusiastically at someone then what can we say about his mother. If she is a mother indeed, then who can be called as 'childless'? Ergo, having a son without good qualities is equivalent to not having a son (or worse).

सर्वलक्षणहीनोऽपि यः सदाचारवान्नरः ।
श्रद्धधानोऽनसूयश्च शतं वर्षाणि जीवति ॥

Even when a person who does not have any other qualities, a man will live for hundred years if he is virtuous, has sincerity in all his dealings and never feels jealous.

सर्वैर्गुणैर्विहीनोऽपि वीर्यवान् हि तरेद्रिपून् |
सर्वैरपि गुणैर्युक्तो निर्वीर्यः किं करिष्यति ||

If one does not have lofty virtues but is courageous, he can conquer his enemies. What good is all the virtues if one does not have the courage to confront and conquer your adversaries?

सुतप्तमपि पानीयं पुनर्गच्छति शीतताम् ||

Objects or people will always follow their innate disposition. It can not be changed by any amount of advice. No matter how much heat water, left to itself, it will cool down.
