मृगा मृगैः संगमनुव्रजन्ति
    गावश्चगोभिस्तुरगास्तुरंगैः ।
मूर्खाश्च मूर्खैः सुधियः सुधीभिः
    समानशीलव्यसनेषु सख्यम् ॥

    gAvaH cha gobhiH turagAH turangaiH ।

गुणागुणज्ञेषु गुणा भवंति
    ते निर्गुणं प्राप्य भवंति दोषाः ।
आस्वाद्यतोयाः प्रभवंति नद्यः
    समुद्रमासाद्य भवन्त्यपेयाः ॥

If certain qualities are found in a person who can tell right from wrong, then he becomes virtuous. But if the same is found in a rogue, then it becomes a wickedness. Water in a river is so pleasant to drink. The same water becomes undrinkable when it reaches the sea.

    पराङ्मुखी विश्व सृजः प्रवृत्तिः ॥

    हिमं न सौभाग्यविलोपि जातं ।

Even if a man has great qualities to be almost equal to Lord Shiva, he will wilt (decline) if he is not properly supported (by family, state, etc..). Even a extremely rare gem needs the support of gold to shine as an ornament.
